The democratic congressional lommlttee has been Informed that Mr. Mercer's man agers have secured a list of the strike breakers at the I'nlon Pacific ehops and that it is their Intention to hsve these men vote illegally at the election nest-week In either Omaha, 8outh Omaha or la various country precincts. Tba Swedish voters of Yalrey precinct are being put to the test of their credulity again by Congressman Mercer in his en deavors to secure the votes of m;n of that nationality. There are two Swede voters ot the village who know Just what the prom ise of Mercer are worth and they have In formed a number of their compatriots, show lag that his promise to tbe Swedes two and four years ago were worth Just as much aa. tbe promise be made to place a Swede on tbe county ticket ta Douglas county this fall. In 1(9 Albert Egbert, a grocer of Valley, was approached la behalf of Mr. Mercer and asked to do what he could with tbo Swedish voters of the precinct and that in return Mercer would see that the postmas terahlp of tbe town would be given to him. Egbert . believed the congressman and started to work with vigor. He was ea- dorsed afterward by a aumber ot the voters of tbe village, and precinct, but tbe post- mastsrshlp weat to 03 of the Puffer broth' era, wbo have aince removed frnm the state. Ia 1891 A. P. Wllkstrom, a leading Swed ish merchant of Valley, wae used as the eatapaw. He was promised the postofllce, aa Egbert bad been two years before. His work was ao effective that Mercer carried the precinct by a slight majority. Mr. Wlkstrum then went after tbe appointment. He waa endorsed by the Swedish Republican league of the county, by the Garfield club. by prominent politicians and by 140 patrons of the Valley postofflc. He waa turned down by tb congressman as his fellow countryman had been before. The candi date, it is said, has been working bard to find some other Bwede in Valley to bunco this fall, but they are wary now and be is referred to Egbert and Wlkstrom. Tbe state Society of Labor and Industry la getting ready to make strong plea before the romtag legislature to secure the enactment of law which, will be ot benefit to laboring men and to retain upon tbe stat ute books the present gernlshment law. which is practically no garnishment law at all. There will be a meeting of the legts latlve and executive committee at Omaha some time next month at which all bills submitted to the former committee will be considered and those which tb Joint com mittee deems tbe best will be Introduced and a plan of campaign before th legis lature outlined. At this session a record of tb vote of every member of the assembly will b kept upon all questions In which the laboring people are Interested, and these records will ba preserved tor th us of th members of th society. A good story Is told ot W. T. Nelson, ran dldat for th legislature en the republican ticket. One day last week a political worker wae talking to a Swede who waa ob Jectlng to the way ia. which his nationality bad been turned down and the worker said "Too must be mistaken. W. T. Nelson la n the ticket, and surely a man named Nelson Is a good representative of the Swede." A short time afterward th Swede met Mr. Nelson and spoke to him In 8wedish Th candidate and th voter looked at each other with ausptcion for a minute and thea passed by, the 8w.de convinced that all of tbe Nelsons do not come from Stockholm. - O. Kettering, whose nsme appeared In The Bee Sunday as one of the Fourth ward voters who bad been sworn in at the recent primary election and who could not be found at the street number designated la the affidavit, announces that he Uvea at 261 Fa mam street, and the wrong number, 2606, given by mistake at the time the affi davit was made. J. P. Hedberg, whose name waa also among those who could not be found at tbe street number given In the affidavits, lives at C14 South Seventeenth avenue. Tbe affidavit on which he voted givee th address as fit North Seventeenth avenue. "In the cattle country th peopl are well satisfied with existing conditions. When a fat steer sella for 1100 there Is little. desire for a change on the part ot those who own cattle, at least. Business in Holt county is good and the prospect tor a com- ' plete republican victory Is excellent," Th friends ot C. H. Denker. republican candidate for county commissioner in the Third district, report a fight In that district against the republican candidate- by the friends of D. H. Mercer. One of the men who is leading tbe fight on tbe republican candidate has tor some time been an active champion ot South Omaha corporations In their efforts to secure a lower tax assess ment than is warranted by law, and is said to have represented the Burlington railroad at t'mea before the county commissioners. The men who are fighting Denker are os tensibly working tor Prank Hlbbsrd, th populist candidate. Said a republican voter ot th Third dis trict: "We knew befor the , republican primaries that tbe preaent officers of the republican county central committee bad done all in tbelr power for Mercer, even to practically abdicating tbe positions to which they were chosen, but we did not think that without a protest they would permit a tight to b made upon a party nominee in hie In terest and the interests of his friends, the tax-shirking corporations. It they do not know ot the fight they are not doing tneir duty, and if tbey do knew ot it they are doing worse." The struggle of the rival tactions of the socialist party tor a place on the ballots at the coming election will havs aa ending today. Attorney C. B. Prllchard, who went to Uncoln Saturday as tbe attorney for the Balrd faction, claiming to be the regular organisation, secured from Judge frost of tbe district court there an slter natlve writ of mandamua returnable Tuea day, directing Secretary of 8tate Marsh to place that factlon'a ticket Instead ot the nominees of tbs dtssffectlonlsts on the bal lot or be perpared to ahow why he decllnea to do so. Should the court decide today to let tbe mandamua stand as permanent the Balrd people may be saved, as tbe time limit for such changing Is not reached until Wednesday. 910330 9144.012, 191.747.43 388377.40 12373.
