Today's early strong market was a repetition of yester- u.Ji uui vu m. auiaiier acaie. k lie re- Semblance extended to the reactionary ten dency, caused by the heavy realising In progress' under conver of the sustaining strength of a few stocks, but It was not unt,U the announcement of the reduction of ths dividend on Reading first preferred that tha weakness of the whole market became active and prices broke ail around to wen Deiow last night. There has been an Impression for many weeks that the Reading dividend would be reduced In order to extend the voting trust, which under the terms of the trust would be dissolved by the payment of one year's full dividend on tha first preferred stock. The announcement last week that tha Southern railway voting trust has been requested by stockholders to defer the dissolution of the trust by tha post ponement of the dividend on the preferred stock, was a strong corroboration of tha expectation of similar action in tha case of Reading. It la improbable, therefore, that tha mere faot of the reduction of the dividend would have shocked the stock market had It not been for the determined way In which tne reading stocks wera advanced tnis morning on the purchase of enormous blocks of stock. The sudden tumble In these stocks caused by the announcement of the dividend re duction gave rise to a chilling apprehen sion that the bold apeculators who are leading the operations for advancing prices are acting without the best Information In all cases and may be putting up all prices simply by ths force of abundant funds and without substantial grounds for tne mgner range or values. '1 he dimensions uf Llie .aliiu. 'taj lame profits which was going on yesterday and toaay waa an aaaitionai ractor in arousing uneasiness as to the solidity of tha de mand which has made the higher range of Slices. Tha favorites of yesterday and ay before pretty generally suffered from M.TI.Ina avan wtilla Ik. R.ftln. Tlltnnla Central and Colorado Fuel wera advancing most buoyantly. Additional heavy transfers of currency to the west was a contributing factor to un settling confidence. The deposits of cur rency at tha subtreasury today for trans fer amounted to loto.ouo. or which 8aOS.O0O was for Chicago, 9100,000 for Cincinnati and 840,000 for New Orleans. Without counting this movement the subtreasury has taken from tha banks up to yesterday 83,652,000, which just figure in Saturday's bank statement and the subtreasury to day had a small credit balance at tna clear lng house. The treasury statement from Washing ton today- showed a surplus In revenue for tha day of 81,239,427, thus bringing the deficit sines the beginning of the fiscal year to below 86,000,000. Doubts are felt in Wall street as to tha extent of tha measures for relief of tha money market, which the secretary of tha treasury will be willing to take. Another disturbing In fluence was the report of a decrease In net Income of tha Atchison for July ot 8346,511. which was the more effective on account of yesterday's heavy speculation in tne stocg. The unfavorable character of the weather bureau's weekly crop bulletin, especially In regard to cotton, waa a disturbing In fluence. All unfavorable Influences were disregarded In tha early attempts to put up Reading stocks on tha ground that the end of tha coal strike was near. Tha movement In Illinois Central waa unex plained, that In Colorado Fuel seemed to be due to Intimations that tha parties to the dispute for control were In a con ciliatory attitude, which was followed after the close by ths giving out of a statement showing a renewed phase of the contest. In fact more cattle were aold here on Monday of this week than on the first three days of ths corresponding week of lsst year. There were Just a' few loads of corn fed steers Included In the offerings and none thst were choice. Packers, though, took hold In good shape and practically all that were offered brought just about steady prices. The cow market waa fairly active and no quotable change from yesterday was no tloeable. Trading was quite active on the better gradea and sellers had no difficult to dispose of what they had at very aat la factory prices. The medium grades and common stuff sold rather slowly the same as has been the cass for sometime past. There was not enough change in the prioes paid for bulls, veal calves and ataga to be worthy of mention. The active demand from the country yes terdsy for feeders brought speculators out good and early this morning, and they were all looking tor good, heavy, dehorned cattle. Such kinds could safely be quoted steady to strong and active. As there were over 116 loada shipped to ths country yes terday the yards ware pretty well cleaned of good cattle, but there were plenty of the commoner kinds left. Thst fact nat urally made buyers slow about buying tba Inferior kinds, so that ths market was dull n ail but tha rood stuff. Ths market on western beef steers was fairly active and no material change from yesterday waa noticeable In the - prices paid. Good western feeders also sold to good advantage, and the best grades could be quoted strong Tha commoner grades of killers, as well as of feeders, were rather alow sale and no more than steady. Kanga cows of geod quality were active and ateady with Interior graaee auu. nepre SeotaUV Bales: BEET BTEIRJL Aa. rr. No it. rr. No. rt I M 91 1M1 8 I w t u m la m is i '...in 4 at l I on HEIFERS. ,. In fact It has been a long time since tne supply nas Keen as small aa it haa so far this week. In spite of the light run h-re, as well ss st other points, packers started in to pound the market. At this place the market opened weak to a nickel lower than yes terday's average, or about like yesterday's close. The bulk of the early sales went from 37.23 to 37 30. A few choice loads sold from 87.30 to 37.60. Local packers seemed to have quits liberal orders and there was also quite a shipping demsnd, but buyers llliru IV hi. , i "a a uhu, av 1,1.1 trading waa not very active. Practically everything, though, was dlapoaed of In good season. About 11 ' o doci a train arrived with several loada and those did not sell quite as well ss the earlier ar rivals. For the week, however, the snipply Is far In excess of e'ther the same days of last week or of last year, aa will be seen from the-table given at the head of the column. The sheen market today was In good shape and could be quoted about stesdy with yesterday s close. The reeling on the close yesterday was a little better than esrller In the day and the prices paid to day did not show much change from the bent time yesterday. The Quality of the offerings, though, wss nothing extra and In fact strictly choice stuff waa rather scarce. Yearlings, however, sold aa high as 34.00 and sheep brought 33.60. The demand for gcod lambs wss satisfactory, so that desir able grades of all kinds of killers com manded steady prices with yesterday's de cline When It came to the commoner grades the msrket wss rather dull. Feeders moved freely at steady to strong trices where the quality was satisfactory. The demand was fully o,ual to the supply and the bulk of the offerings waa disposed of In good season.
