0 THE OMAHA DAILY BEE: MONDAY, JUNE IB, 1902. CONDITION OF OMAHA'S TRADE Jobbers Eitremely Well Pleased with Ee tulis Thai far. JUNE WILL BE A RECORD BREAKER Hot Mch Change In Market Valor,, at Price as a Kale t onlluo Klrm lonsamlns- Irnand El crlleut for Jane. OMAHA, June 14. Trie encurslon to be neia en Tbursrlay nil rrlday of this week IihTi i lm the ail sorolng topic In the jobbing diMrUt during ths last few days. No trouble or pains are being spared by thou? bavin the matter In tliarge to make It the binner excursion of the season. An invitation to take part In the excurmon has been extended to tne Live Stock exchange at South Omaha, and according to latest reports enough will Ko fiom there to till one car. Sentiment re gal ding these excursions has chained very niHterially and Jobbers generally re laf: in a greater Interest than ever before, it seems to be admitted on all sid.-a that per sonal acquaintance between the city and thu rountry Is of great advantage to all t-r.rlles and ought to be encouraged. As regards trade the situation could hardly be more encouraging. Iteports from all sections of tributary territory Indicate crops 111 general as doing well and glv-"s promise of an abundant harvest. Huc-n damage as has resulted from a surplus ot moisture Is limited to small areas and will rot cut much figure In general results. One thir.r there Is plenty of green feed In the country, which means a large hay crop and r abundunci of feed for cattle As cattle hive of In i Keen very profitable for far mers mory ought to be plentiful In the etock-growlng sections of the west and lr'ie In all lines correspondingly good. A knowledge of these tacts produces a gen eral feeling o contldence In all depart ments i.nn jobbers seem Inclined to push out for trady harder than ever. Their ef forts along this line, together with tho very large consuming demand In the coun trv accounts for the Increase that Is re torted In tho volume of sales over previous years. ITon-iocta for trade in the gracing s'atef. ' of Nebraska are most en couisglng. In those states live stock has no' ccmmencei' to move as yet, but It la predicted that shipments will be the heaviest In the history of the trade and that more money will be sent back from the big markets than ever before. Grocers Very Host-. a. mom the case last week all the grocery t .K.r. 1.1 the i-ltv are reporting a very heavy business doing and it Is about all .. thou nn mnn-ure to keep abreast of the flood of orders arriving by every mail. The orders are r-o'. for any special line of I goods, os la the case sometimes, but cover the whole range of goods to be found In Stock, showing that consumers are buying because they have the money and are will ing to part with It. Nothing of any great Interest has hap pened as regards market prices during the fast lew days. Shipments of the new pack of Columbia river salmon are reported on the wjy at T. win be on the market In tho rear future. Uriai fruits are moving along w'thour any very noteworthy changes In tho general situation. The new crop of fcinyrna tigs Is snid to be very backward, owing to cold weather and a late spring on thu other side. Ahead of Last Year. Exter.tlve building operations In all sec tion, of tributary territory has created an active demand for all kinds of builders' haroware and Jobbers report sales run nl.iit considerably ahead of corresponding period latt year. Nails, paints, oils, glass an! tilling" ot ali kinds are selling freely. TheM !m also n verj good demand for shelf harm rue of ail kluda and because of this den unci whlcl' Is common to the whole country f well as to the west, prices gen erally are firm. Prospects at the present time wonla stem to point to an exception ally good summer trade. Good Shoe Weather. Omnha Is well supplied with shoe houses and wht.li they all report a good business It means that something Is doing. The fact that there has been ail kind, of weather thl, spring has been of great help to re tailers In cleaning up their stocks. Job bers sav that an unusually large number of sizing-ur orders are coming to hand, wh'ch inn. ns that retailers are disposing of thdlr stocks rapidly and that prospects are guoi fur h continuance of tne demand. Traveling nen on the road are all send ing In tho most encouraging reports and at tlife same time e.re taking many fall orders. Merchants V'lio were a little backward a bo 'j i placing orders a short time ago have evident. y changed their minds and are falllr.K Into line with the balance of trade. The annoui cement made some time ago In tiios-i columns that this would be the ban ner j tfiir t-c lar as jobbers of leather goods ar, cjiiceniod still promises to prove true. Dry Goods Strong;. While no marked change has taken place In tne dry goods market advices from eastern manufacturers all Indicate that they have sold up very closely the output of cotton and woolen goods and that wie it, at ket Is really In a strong position. V list her that Is true or not there cer tainly no great surplus of goods on hand, Ca evidenced by tho difficulty met by job eis In getting some orders filled. Local houses report a very large sale of (all goods of all kinds: In fact the total volume Is far In excess of the record of previous years at this season. Unless all Jig.is fail this will bo the best yrter in, the hlstciy of the Jobbing dry goods trade of ttiU in.it ket A gooci many buyers have been In during the week or.il current business has been fully as vatiUuclory as the fall business. Krnlts and Produce. A tempting array of fruits and vegetables Was to be found on the market all the Week. Almost anything that one "ould de sire was to be found, and of good quality. r rices, however, continue rather stiff, as as t 'lu. the case all the season. Strawberries, which command more at tention than any otner iruit at this season. are coming from a number of dtftetent ourjes. I'u: k.riceii are high and there does, not stem to be any pritspect of their being very low at any time during the sea son. lWple who have been In the habit of waiting u.r tneap sioca to put into cans are more map i.Heiy to sutler disappoint, inert. : It Ih siild that early cherries will H scarce and Mgh. but there Is Dromlse of a. . OMERCIAL AND FINANCIAL Dealen Apathetic and Bears Taks Turn at Wheat PROVISIONS DEAD AND ALL LINES SLUMP Oats Sympathise with Lending; Cereal nd Cheapen, While lorn Shows Independent Strength and Closes Strong; and I p. CHICAGO. June 14. Apathy pervaded the pits of the Poard of Trade today. Trader aid little attention to anytning nut wneat nd not much of that. Inasmuch as wet weather has ruled the pit for the last week, when prospects of clearing skies were reported wheat lost Its strength. Oats ympathized somewnat, Dut corn was umier he ban of manipulation and held lirm. At he close July wheat was ttfc lower, ulv torn !iii.c un and July oats tc down. Provisions closed i'o down for everything n the list. Late selling developed the only activity that the wheat pit experienced today. At he outset cables w.-rj lower, indicating etter weather In France and England. he southwest sold liberally in suite of he fact that the country still had a soggy lanket spread over it and more rains were falling. Commission houses took a little stuff on the score that not since the Letter deal has there been such clear In- dlcatkns that Mock of old wheat are practically exhausted. A belief then seemed to take 1-old of the crowd that line weather was at hand. Private telegrams bjoyed bears up to this opinion and when he open elevator crowd began selling freely the crowd was sure a reaction had et In. Meanwhllo the wheat nit was very dull. While the sellfhg progressed a radual incline ensued ana July, wnicn ad opened unchanged to tc lower at 'io to 72c. slumped to a weak close and ac lower at 71Ca'717iC. Local receipts were ii cars 0 or contract grade. Aiin- eapolls and Duluth reported 217 cars, mak ing a total of 239 cars, agains 2fil lost week, and 492 a year ago. Primary re ceipts were 3i7,0OO bushels, compared with 667, Vo0 bushels last year. Seaboard clear ances in wneat and hour equaled brz.uoo bushels. The seaboard reported fifteen loads taken for export. Corn was easy and dull, even for Satur- ay. Wet weather all over the corn states hindered movement and grading, but the lower cables and the wheat weajiness .off set the bullish factors and the pit was lert mucn to itself, in spite ot tne itre less nature of the pit corn held very firm. Two rumors were going the rounds rela tive to the big "deal In July options. One was that the Wall street crowd was hipping out cash stuff. The other had it that J. Ogden Armour rather than the wall street crowd was the manipulator. On these rumors the crowd fought shy of the pit, especially as there win no big soiling today. July fluctuated only Ho and closed at Its strongest, Hfi'nC up at 63"o. Country acceptances are still small. Re ceipts were 307 cars, but graded only 34 cars contract. Oats were steady early, but trade was slow. There was little support to the mar ket ana wnen wneat weakenea oats rell off In sympathy. There was a little re covery late. July new sold from 40c to 39yjc, and closed easy and a lower at 39T(C. Receipts were 1G5 cars. provisions were dead with tho exception of a little outside liquidation. Hogs were slightly weaker and packers refused to sup port after the first few minutes. This re sulted In a decided slump, but part of the loss was regained. In general the mar ket was so dull that It was featureless. All July products closed 7Hc lower, pork at 317.6214, lard at 310.22V! and ribs at 310.40. NEW YORK, June 14.-Very little Im portance can be attached to today's deal ings In stocks. Prices were well held, but this was not because there was any gen- ral demand, but rather because there were no offerings. Outside of Missouri aoiric and St. Paul the dealings were hardly more than nominal. These two stocks were lifted a point afte the ap pearance of the bank statement. but neither closed at the besL The closing w:is lalrly steady, however, but very dull. The bank statement was considered fa vorable and helped the market. The gain of 31 ,260,1X1)1 in cash reserves was larger han expected and the contraction or over H.tioii.On)) In the loan account came In place of some apprehension of a further expan sion or that account. The net result was add more than 32.ono.tjno to the surplus over the legal requirement In the reserves of the association banks. The buyliiK of Missouri Paclne and of St. Paul was of the same character ss dur- ng the week, and Is attributed to opera- ions or speculative noois u ne coalers were neglected owing to the lack of corrobora- lon or yesterday s rumors or measures tag- ng which would end the strike. The rlae of a point In Norfolk A West ern was based upon the report that the strike of the soft coal miners In the Vir ginias baa been broken. There was noth- ng in tne day s crop news to stimulate speculation. The trading was perfunctory mrougnoui. The favorable reports or the mercantile agencies, which showed the anthracite strike to be the only cloud on tne lndus- riai horizon, and a snowing of railroad earnings for the ttrst week In June, which are larger by over 6 per cent than those of the same period last year, were innuences nward conserving the nrm undertone of stocks. Totals 38 11,907 CATTLE The receipts for the week show a decrease of about 2.000 cattle as com pared with last week, the loss being great est In beef steers and cornfed butchers' stock. There has been a proportional In crease In grassy grades, especially In cows and heifers. , , Beef steers have been In moderate supply the entire week, but in the limited run there has been received some very good steers. Choice dry lot steers sold 10? 16c htgher, the tops selling up to $7.65, the highest price ever paid for beef cattle on this market. Grassy and unfinished beeves on the other hand sold lower from day to day. as the supply of common grades In- Practically the same conditions prevailed In the market for ahe stock Inasmuch as cornfed cows and heifers held up strongly the entire week and grassy grades gradu ally declined In price. The receipts of thin stock have Increased and values lowered BCBuliBln1ta'g, veal calves and odds and enda In the butcher line. If fat are free sellers at current prices, but If thin are more or less of a drag on the murket Well bred stock cattle sold reasonably well at current quotations during the week, but there has been a slack demand for In ferior grades of stockers and feeders Qual ity at the present time Is what Is desired while the lKqulry at this time of the year Is, of course, limited. . .
