8 THE OMAHA DAILY 11EE Fill DAY, APltIL 2o, 1902. COMMERCIAL AND FINANCIAL Grain Prices Lose Hold and Liquidation Order of Day. PROVISIONS ALONE ARE BUOYED UP Lonns' Loosenlns; and Kansaa Rains llave Dlaaitrna Fnct Cereal Yalaea, bat Btrenalh Displayed In ProtUInn I'M. CHICAGO, April 24 Hulls In the grain pllii changed front today and bears came f; for a sliare of the profit. After ster day'a remarkable advance of dry weather a dusty weather map started prlcea Orm, but rains brought a scare and liquidation was the order of the day. Prices slipped down badly. May wheat cloning- 1V4ji.c lower. May com 1M0 depressed and May oat ISc off. Provisions were firm, and closed 2;c to 6fi7Vc higher. Lry weather being the cause of yester day's wheat splurge, It waa but natural that anvthlnr In the way of rains In the wheat belt should Influence rapid changes In sentiment on the part of the bulls. There waa plenty of bull news cables were strong, receipts small, clearances large and crop damage reporte came In abundance. The morning weather report showed the wheat fields as dry as tinder. Belling started early, merely for profits by the longs, who had accumulated stuff at low prices. This eased the market some what, but when the rain reports from Kansaa arrived selling waa general. The outside markets liquidating freely, es pecially Bt. Louis, which sold very heavily fend slumped. Before there was any ces sation of the heavy pressure on the market here priced had slipped down almost 2c. Late in the day there was fair covering and vslues recovered a little of the loss. May wheat opened unchanged to He lower at to 7c and fell to 75'(T75Hc, closing weak. . lH'JrlSo down at "aViioHc. Re ceipts, twenty-nine tars, one contract; Mlnneapollo and Duluth reported lt cars, a total for the three points of 198, against 207 last week and 250 a year ago. Primary receipts were 2f9,OuO bushels, compared with 394,0nu a year ago. Seaboard clear ances equaled 728,uuO bushels. Sympathy with the wheat break was enough to start corn down hill, but the big bull crowd, which bought heavily of July yesterday, turned sellers and Induced a had slump. Bentlment was changed somewhat on general news. Country offer ings were larger, the southwest sold and was weak and reports had It that the new crop waa starting well. An Increased acreage also was reported In the north west, leading Interests did a good buying business as prices declined, but the pit closed very weak and almost at the bot tom. July waa the weakest option. Com mission houses were on both sides of the market, but favored selling. May opened o lower to He higher at 444j4c on firm cables and the early weather reports, slumped to 63feo and closed weak, 1 Wo lower at KP4c. Receipts, 88 cars. Oats Buffered with the other grains. Southwest rains and freer country offerings Induced liberal selling and, though packers and commission houses bought well and held prlcea up- for a time, declines ensued. The trade was on a liberal scale. May sold from 44c down to 43c and closed weak, 1 off at 43140. Receipts, 167 cars. There was an active scramble to buy hog products at the opening, because of a. light run and better hog prices. Packers were the best buyers and forced prices up;- later the same interests unloaded for good irofita and, as grains weakened and offer ngs became liberal, some of the earlv gains were lost. The close, however, was firm. April 24. The Important nfluence of the grain crop prospect upon he stock market was again demonstrated today. After a strong opening prices wavered and commenced to go back when he weather man was nubllshed. showing almost 410 rain precipitation east of the KocKy mountains, out wnen tne wneai markets opened and revealed an active liquidation thrre at declining piiccs.stocks promptly began to pick up again. 11 ne persistent sagging oi me price or wTTcat was accompanied by growing and broadening strength In stocks, with the notable demand centered on the gruln- arrylng rallrtads. Hut the day s events are a striking evi dence of the Intimate association at pres ent between the gniln markets nnd the se curities market. The oulok response be- ween the two Is emphasized by the gen eral conviction that the present strong leadership in the stock market la held by persons of long experience In grain spec ulation and heavily committed In the cur rent grain dealings. There were other features which con joined to help the recovery In atocks. The annual report of the Lake Shore railroad was a palpable Influence on all of the Van derbllts and Indirectly on the whole rail road list on account of the enormous earn- ng power revealed and the prosperous traffic conditions. The disclosure of the purchase by the Lake Shore of a largo block of Lehigh Valley stock and admla- lons on the part of tne principal banking house Interested In the coalers that pur chases of Reading were being made by New York Central, Pennsylvania and the Goulds was taken as corroboration of the extensive community of Interest being es tablished in the whole coal transportation industry. New York Central recovered strongly, t from Its recent depression. Lake Shore Itself and Michigan Central, owing to the small floating supply outside the New York Central treasury, rose 13 and 19 respec tively on a very light demand. United States Steel stocks shared In the strength of the market for the first time in many weens, rising 1 eacn on account or the very active conditions in the trade. Attention was attracted today to the enor mous expansion of the plant In progress, which, according to one authority, will add at least 6.000 tons dally to the nig Iron product. A variety of specialties, including me more unpoi io.ni inuuninniB, an anareu In the strength of the market. The money market continued easy, with evidence of continued recuperation of the banking reserves. Sterling exchange con tinues Arm, but Is still short of the gold export point. The easy condition In the money market Is a material factor in fos tering the speculation. The bona marKet was quite active and strong. Total sales, par value, $5,816,000. The market opened firm, with prices 8 to 10 points higher on active general buying and bullish news from all quarters. The shorts were by far the most energetic buyers and throughout the session led In the demand, which con tinued to generous proportions. The first sale of July was at 9.25c, this being one point above the previous high notch for the season. The commotion among the bears was occasioned by an unexpected bulge in Liverpool amounting to 4 points on futures and 1-161 on spot cotton. A scare of European shorts and a scarcity of sellers were given for the cause for ths advances In that market. Europe sent large buying orders to the ring here and the south, too, bought New York cotton. The close was steady, with prices net 8 to 13 points higher. GALVESTON, Tex.. April 24. As compared with the same week of last year, though, there la not much change. The market waa not particularly active and it was rather late before a clearance was made. The bulk of the offering's waa asraln made up of beef steers and the quality was about the same as It has been. Park ers did not take hold with very much Ufa ana a siow ana weag market resulted. Some of the choicest bunches sold at Just about steady prices, but as a general thing all but the best grades sold a little lower Sellers did not like the Idea of taking off much, but as packers were rather indif ferent buyers they had to sell out a little lower In a good many cases. The com moner the cattle the harder they were to move. The cow market was also slow, with the tendency of prices downward. The best graaes soia at ngnt arouna steady prices as compared with yesterday, but outside of those kinds the market was very slow and a little lower than yesterday. It was rather late before a clearance was made. Bulls did not show much change today, but If anything they were a little lower In sympathy with the weak feeling on steers and cows. The same was true of stags, unless they were very good. Veal calves brought Just about steady prices. There were comparatively few Blockers and feeders on sale today, so that the market held just about steady. Good stuff sold without difficulty at steady prices dui ,wnen 11 cn in o iodine common grades the market was very slow, the same aa it has been all along. There were about 23 cars of cattle shipped to the country yes- leiunj. ncivBciuaiive sates: BEEP. BTEER8. Ha. I. ... 1.... 1.... ..., 1..., 48... 13... 11... 40... JO... I... 1J... 1... I... 1... Jacobs Colorado. 45 steers. ...1184 6 80 IIOUS There was a moderate supply of hogs here today, which makes the receipts for the week to date about the same as lor last week, but much less than for the same days of last year. Favorable reports were received from other points, and under the Influence of a good local demand the market advanced Wvi 15c. On the start the market was, perhaps, not over a dime higher, but It soon took on more life and strength, so that the general market could be quoted 10Cg15c higher. Good heavy hogs sold largely at $7.00 to 17.10. and fancy loads sold from $7.10 to $7.20, which carries the market to as high a point as has been reached this year. The medium weights went mostly from $6.95 to $7.00. while the lighter loads sold from $6.95 down. There was not much Improvement In the demand for the llghtwelgnt stuff, which was left until the last, and although" that class of hogs also Improved In price, it was hard to get packers to take them. Everything was disposed of at an early hour. Repre sentative sales: No. 67... 43... 79... 63... N... 77.., 71.., 86.., 65... N6... 72... 30... 80... 86... 69.., 33... 88.., 71... 82... 3. Av. Fh. Some of the eiYerings were of better quality than any thing offered pp to this time, 00 that prlcea reached the high pnlnt of the season. Clipped lambs sold as high as $6.40. and clipped wethers broeght 6!25. The market for the week so far csn safely be quoted 10815c higher all around.
