THE OMAHA DAILY 11EE: FRIDAY, Aril I L 18, 11)02. I 'I V 1 1 I I! COMMERCIAL AND FINANCIAL Wheat Soars to Dizzy Height with Openihg Hush to Buy. REACHES ' SEVENTY-FIVE-CENT MARK Knees Off Later, bat Clone with Bin Gain Other Two Ornl Leader tlt Higher and rroTlsloa - Have Gala liar. CHICAOO. April 17. Grain speculator, who Innocently bellevpd In the mythical lories mailed yesterday about drenching rain In the suffering wheat country, found out todny that they had been caught nap ping. The result was one of the most ex cited bull market the pita have aeen alnce the recent upturn. Wheat led In the ac tivity, making; an early Jump of almost 2c. Heavy profit-taking brought recensions In all grains, but the bullish sentiment pre ' vailed and May wheat closed lc higher. May corn He higher and May oats fee up. iTovlslons closed Milbo advanced. I'd to midday the trade In wheat was an anxious effort to undo the error of yester day. The boars, who plucked up courage to aell short heavily yesterday and pressed price back, changed front at the opening, when It waa learned that the rain re ported yesterday were by no means 'urn clent to the need of the winter wheat crop. Cables were lowr-r at the atart and northwestern farmer were reported mak ing better deliveries of wheat. The general outlook, however, wa decidedly bullish and at the very start of the gong there wa an exciting rush to buy. May opened W& n higher at 73tT74Ho. and In a very short time wa rushed to 1 5c. Here trade eased off a little and price hung steady for anme time at slight recession. Such a bulge, naturally brought out large quantltle of long stuff for good profits. 8U Louis wa a very heavy seller. Oddly enough, the selling wa augmented by new reports of western rain. The general sentiment o the crowd waa voiced rather accurately by a prominent statistical Journal, which stated tiiat the cool weather waa retarding wheat growth and waa to some extent prejudicial. The moisture 1 deficient and the Weather bureau predict no rain for thlrtv-six hours. Some of the bear found comfort in the fact that Kansa City price had widened out to 4e In Chicago against 84e under a few days ago. It wa argued that Kansas wa showing no fear of drouth daman. Some of the reports had effect, for May broke slowly and sold down to 73o. At this price, however, the buying side wn favored and a good rally aet In. May closed strong, H40 higher at 74Mc. Kecefpts, 48 cars, 1 of contract; Minneapo lis and Dulufh, reported lfil cars, a total for the three points of 207 against 14 last week and 272 a year ago. Primary receipta were jr.i7,0M) bushels, compared to 861,000 bushels las"t year. Seaboard clearances equaled 217.000 bushels. Corn had little to help it upward, aside from the general bullish situation. Al though there wa a bull market most of the session. It waa rather a forced affair. , Cables started out lower, ground breaking was reported going on well and trade was only fairly active. Yet the wheat strength and the wenther condition were bullish Incentive. The failure of the big western corn states to get rains 'was bullish be cause It suggested possible trouble for the crop later. On the other hand, report were circulated again claiming more lib eral country offerings of com. Consider ing the strength of wheat, the small re ceipts at Kansas City and St. Iu!s and the big demand for cash stuff, corn did not act well. New from the southwest was bullish, but reported selling by a big commission house checked the advance. May corn opened Witt" higher at 1'AW fB'o. sold as low as 0c, when wheat eased off and reacted to 62 closing firm mid a higher at (,2c. Receipts, cars. There waa a better trade la oata than for soma time. July and September were In good demand on reports thus, the weather was retarding plant growth. Offer ings were few and the wheat strength con tributed to the better tone. May wa rather steady and little dealt In. though r lightly advanced on moderate cash bus nes. May old between 4? and 43fee and closed Vgo up at the latter figure. Receipta, 131 cars. Provllon showed Improvement after yesterday's liquidation. Strength In grains land the email run of hogs Influenced fair buvlng. Packer also supported. Scattered telling by local scalpers In the way of profit-taking took off some of thy gain. April 17.-Southern Railway fell comparatively Into the background to day, taking a place well down In the list of active stocks. The stock wa under the pressure of realizing all day, although It made some recovery after the statement of the absolute control exercised over Louisville Nashville by J. P. Morgan. The somewhat equivocal terms In which the Information has been given to the pub lic regarding the settlement of the Louis ville dispute, and the emphatic disclaimers by Southern Railway officials of any Inter- eat on the part of that road In the set tlement left room for al sorts of rumors of possible further complications, which It was thought desirable, apparently, to check. Louisville A Nashville stock also rallied strongly to 8 over last night after the ststement appeared. It was regarded as a striking demonstra tion of the secure hold of the speculative situation, which ha been obtained by the group of western millionaires, now the eaders of the market, that thev should have been able to keen ud the show of strength In the market In face of reac tionary tendencies In Southern Rallwsv and a number of other unfavorable factors. A a matter of fact, extreme animation and a broadening show of strength were the feature of the market, harrlna- every resemblance to previous great bull markets. tne irregularity aue to active profit-taking going on side bv side with new huvlnar was also In evidence, marking the diversion of speculative profit from one group of stocks into aunoiner. , The coalers were the most consnlcuouslv strong stocks today, led by Reading, which waa dealt In on an enormAua scale, even after allowlna: for the reclrnnlnw in half share or the par value of 85&. Reports ciieu inn a secret agreement naa been reached averting; the possibility of a coal miners' strike. Heavy buying order for the Readings and Erie came from l.onuon, ana tne impression wa conveyed that these were due to Mr. Morgan's nres- ence there. The coalers all suffered from profit-taking toward the last and the lead ership of the market waa shifted to Atchi son, which rose suddenly to 84, followed by Colorado Fuel and Louisville. The reduction of the Amalgamated Cop per division, which ha been looked for- wara to witn apprenension for a loner time, waa totally Ignored, and that stock itself wae run up si ter the announcement of the dividend to nearly a point above last night after having fallen 1. The stock oloaed wiiii m, iraciiona nec loss. united mates steel stocks were moved up a point after a long dormant period. Evidences of recuperation In the local money market were a conserving Influ ence on the speculation. The subtreasury ha contributed something to the local money market by reaaon of large pension payment and considerable shipments of fold from San Francisco are coming In. he movement of currency from the inir. lor 1 In favor of New York and the steadi ness of the sterling market shows that provision for an American subscription to the British-consol Issue does not threaten Immediate further gold exports. Packers were anxious for supplies, so that prices were steady to strong, and it only took a short time for seller to dispose of practically everything '.hey had on hand. There wa a good proportion of beef steers In the receipts this morning, and the quality was up to the usual standard. An high at 86.90 waa paid for some heavy export cattle that , weighed 1,464 pounds. The heavyweight cattle that are good enough for export beef and also the good to choice light weight seemed to be In the best demand, and such kinds could safely be quoted strong and active today. The market on other kinds did not show much change from yesterday, so that the general market could be quoted steady to strong. The cow market wa fully steady with yesterday. Anything at all desirable met with ready aale at good, steady prices, and in some cases sales were made that looked a little better. The medium grades and canners, though, did not sell any more than steady, as the demand for such kinds continue limited. Bulls, veal calves and stags sold In lust about the same notches they did yesterday. The desirable grades were easy to dispose of. but common stuff was neglected. There waa not very many stockers and feeders on sale today, so that although the demand was limited, the better grades sold without much trouble at just about ateady prices, but when It came to the common kinds the market was slow and weak. There were twenty cars of stock cattle shipped to the country yesterday. Repre sentative sales: BEEF STEERS. A v. Pr. ..1071 6 14 ..1037 14 No. 1... 1... I... 1... 1... 7... 1...
