NETW YORK, March 4. Today's stock market for the greater part of the day re ported the retracing of yeaterday"s upward course In the process of taking profits on a small turn, which is a characteristic of the professional market. Late In the dny, however, the selling gained appreciable force and carried prices downward by rapid stages to the lowest of the day, mak ing the close active and wtnk. The mart ket also broadened out conalderably in the selling movement and the dealings were much better distributed than at any other time during the day. The standard stocks were as greatly affected as some of the minor specialties which have lately been so conspicuous in the market. The grow ing dimensions of the requirements on New York cash reserves seemed to be the cause of the rather acute uneasiness mani fested. The engagement of gold for ex port announced today for Saturday and Saturday's steamers and are estimates of others likely t be made. Indicate the prob able outgo of 35,000,000 or over this week to foreign shores. The underwriting syndi cate of the San Francisco Traction reor- fanlzatlon called upon Ite subscribers today or a 20 per cent payment. This means a remittance to San Francisco at thin date of about 14,000,000. It Is true that this op eration will mean no encroachment upon the country's available money aupply, aa the treasury authorities will pay out In San Francisco Immediately the amount de posited In the subtreasury in New York, but the operation Involved a depletion of New York bank reserves, nevertheless. The subtreasury had already taken from the New York money market since Friday on routine operations $3,111,000. With the surplus reserves of the banks last week below 810,000,000, these figures in dicate sufficient requirements to carry away tha surplus entirely. Under this computation It is also expected that part of last week's decrease In cash reserves will be felt In this week's bank statement. The confidence which has been felt In the continued ease of the money market in the face of these developing figures was partly based upon the belief In government bond circles that government bonds would be offered to the Treasury department for re demption In case of any real need In the money market. As a matter of fact, bonds to the par value of 31,000.000 were offered to the subtreasury late today, for which 11,122,401 was paid In cash, but this did not seem to relieve the apprehension of a pos sible money squeese. It was) noticeable that the sterling exchange market waa af fected by the offerings of bllla against the gold engaged for export, ao that rates yielded a fraction, which waa not the case when gold was engaged last week. The statement of the Missouri Pacific for Jan uary, showing a decrease In net earnings pf 8521,000, caused an early sharp decline In that stock and affected the list by sym pathy, offsetting the influence of various other railroad reports, notably the extra ordinary showing made by the annual re port of the Pennsylvania. The early mar ket was largely one of specialties. In which Chicago & North wee tern waa prominent, with a rise - of 8. Lackawanna became equally conspicuous In the late dealings, with a drop of 6. The bond market was Inclined to dullness, but held comparatively steady. Total sales, par value, 82.930.000.
