'"wheat trado cnrly was unlet, with a
strong undertone. After yesterday s de
moralization, a llrm opening on cables and
dry weather was very reassuring to tho
bull professionals. Liverpool started some
what butter and In face of tho decline hero
lent confidence In tho pit. Tho effect of
tho heavy Phillip liquidation yesterday
had evaporated and tho market wns on Its
old footing ngulri. 1'erhaps tho most notice
able result or yesterday's tumult was the
absence, of tho usual volumo of oiitsldo
business. Shortly after the opening of May,
ifflYtO to ytW!t! higher at 8IV4C to 81,c,
there was an effort nirfdo ut supporting
tho market anil at ono time, on a revlvul
of commission buying, a recovery scorned
Imminent As It wus May rose to 8114c.
Hoars had the bulls virtually by the horns
und pressed steadily on prices. Jlcavy sell
ing sot In on all sides. News camo that
Liverpool was declining. Somo shorts took:
advantage of the situation to cover for
profits, Tut tho amount of wheat was
trifling. Weak holders everywhere wcro
forced out by tho heavy calls for margins
by houses that feared other fnllurcs might
result from yesterday's hard pressure. To
abet tho bearish argument, tho coarso
grains were" being pounded. Cash corn
was especially weak. May wheat during
the last hour reeled off rapidly to SOc, and
,nt tho close of tho session was weak, 4g
ftc lower nt fcOUc. Local receipts were 45
cars, 2 of contract grade. Minneapolis and
Duluth reported 391 cars, making n total
for tho threo points of 433 cars, against 401
last week nnd 385 a yenr ago. Primary re
ceipts were 498,000 bushels, compared with
62O.O0O bushels. Seaboard clearances In
wheat and Hour equalled 162.000 bushels.
Tho seaboard reported 48 cars taken for cx-
''co'rn ulnrtcl llrm nnd higher with wheat
and on fairly good cables. Somo of tho
corn sold yesrrrday was replaced and
thero was somo small country buying. Re
celpts wero very light, but country offer
ings were reported freor. when wheat ad
vanced corn followed nfter, but soon
turned heavy on Its poor cash situation,
nnd later broko badly In wheat company.
Cash houses reported Ec decllno for car corn
in as many days. Hood weather curtailed
tho amount needed for stock feeding and
tho absenco of demand worked against tho
pit. Liquidation on nil sides set In about
tho noon hour nnd prices slumped in n
panicky fashion. May, which had opened
steady, at to'lil'tic nnd sold up to 6,".c,
dropped almost 2c to fflio. At this llguro
shorts took profits enough to steady tho
market at tho close. Tho session ended
with May weak, l&c down, at G.TJ&C. Rc
celpts wero hJ cars.
Karly In tho day oats ruled rather firm
nnd Independent of tho other grains. Prices
opened higher In splto of tho more liberal
country offerings, selling ns high ns 45Ttc.
Flnnlly under tho corn Influcnco oats began
to tumble. Largo quantities of long stuff
wero thrown out. Tho provisions people,
who wcro already short largo quantities,
began selling more. A lending professional
unloaded considerable, but thero was a
llrm stand by tho bulls to support tho mar
ket nnd this tended to steady tho tone.
May sold off to 414c and closed weak, ?io
Sown ut 4l!ic. Receipts wcro 120 cars.
Provisions wero fairly active. They
started out with good evidence of n bull
market on a country demnnd ana n strong
Tiog market nt tho yards. When corn col
lapsed tho early bought stuff was thrown
overboard and prices slid off. May pork

Which Is of Short llnrntlon,
NEW YORK. Jan. 16.-Tho stock market
turned from Its recent consistent down
ward course todny nnd enjoyed something
of a rnlly. Tho demnnd was In a fairly
Inrgo scale, but tho market showed n tend
ency to fall Into Intense dullness and de
veloped a hesitating tono on tho advance.
There wero a number of reactions during
tho day, but the closing was near to tho
top level, but dullness and wavering still
vory manifest. Tho demand from the short
Interest was a palpable Influence In the
rise. Signs of support wero seen early In
the day In somo of the stocks, which wcro
chief targets for boar attack, notably In
Union Pacific und other trnnscontlnentnls.
This served to Intimidate the benrs, al
though they renewed their selling on nd
vances. Tho fact was manifest that tho
inoro urgent selling had been disposed of
on previous days, and tho efforts of tho
hears Induced little- liquidation. A number
of Incidents aided tho bulls In turning tho
mnrkot ngnlnst their opponents. Thero
was a striking demonstration In Sugar on
tho strength of tho hearing accorded by
tho ways nnd means committee at Wnsh
lngton to tho advocntes of a reduction of
duties on Cuban sugnrs. Tho Increase In
tho dividend rate from 2 to 3 per cent on
Now Y'ork, Chicago & St. louls second
preferred rclloved somo npprehenslon that
thero would bo no Increase, although tho
distribution wns not ns largo ns somo spec
ulators havo claimed to expect. New York
Ccntrnl developed strength early In tho
day und had risen to the high point beforo
tho announcement of the new stock Issuo
nnd tho subscription rights to stockholders.
Tho prleo wns Inclined to sag utter the an
nouncement, ns now bond and capital Is
sues have been In disfavor wltli specula

Indicated for somo time past that rights
of somo sort woro accruing, ns the direc
tors' statement now Indicates wns the fnct.
Tho statement of tho country's foreign
trndo for December was rcgartled ns
favorable. Tho heavy decllno In exports
of hrcudstuffs, principally of corn, proba
bly, was expected. Tho decllno In this
Item accounts for practically tho whole of
the decrease In tho total exports for tho
month, which wns about $8,800,000, com
pared with tho previous-December. This
shows that the declining tendency in tho
exports of manufactured products has been
nrrosted, ns was first Indicated last month.
Tho Incrcnso In tho Imports for tho month
has resulted in a falling off of the trado
balance in our favor altogether of over
J20.000.000 compared with tho previous De
cember, but tho Incrcaso In Imports Is not
regarded ns nn unfavorablo factor at pres

products for which domestic manufactur

rocclvc. Tho Inrgo gain by tho banks from
tho subtreasury and tho return of tho flow
of currency from tho Interior glvo assur
ance of a favorable, bank return on Satur
day and tho heaviness of sterling exchange
Indicates that no gold will go out this
week. Thero was also a subsidence todny
of rccont vnguo rumors of financial trou
bles In tho commercial world. Tho sharp
drop In Peoplo's Gas wns duo to the re
fusal of a court to grant an Injunction
ngnlnst tho Chicago city ordinance reduc
ing tho rate for gas to 75 cents por thou
sand. Its Influcnco on tho general market
was only slight.

CATTLE Thero was far from being a
heavy run of cattlo here today for tho
mlddlo of the week, so that prices held
fully steady and In somo cases wcro
stronger. In splto of the fact that Chicago
was quoted all tlio way from steady to loc
lower than yesterday.
A fair nrouortlon of tho rcccltits tndav
consisted of cornfed steers und somo of
them wero of good quality, as Is shown by
tho fact that as high as $6.35 was nald.
Tho demand was liberal on the part of
packers for all tho better grades and tho
market could be quoted steady to strong
and active. Even the less dcslrnblo grades
sold without much difficulty at steady
nrlces and as a result tha nens wern
cleared In good season.
mere was niso considerable iite to tnc
cow market and tho nrlces nald looked
steady to strong as compared with yes
terday. Tho better grades of course wero
In tho best dcmlind, but still even the
medium kinds and canners moved freely
at fully steady prices. It was a cood.
activo markot nil around nnd everything
wns sold nt an early hour.
Bulls were In good request this morning
at fully steady prices where the qudllty
was at all satlsfnctory and the sumo could
bo snld of veal calves und stags.
So fp.r as the stocker und feeder trado
was concerned, thero was but little change
noticeable from yesterday. Receipts wero
light, while the demand was fairly liberal,
so that sollcrs had no trouble In getting
good, firm prices for anything at oil de
sirable. Speculators nro still cautious
about taking hold ot the common grades,
but, as thero are so few good cattlo com
ing, the commoner grades aro selling fairly
well. Representative sales:
