Market Yields to the Srmpnthetlo 1U-
fect iif WenknesM In Steel.
NEW YORK, Jnn. 8.-TI10 stock mnrket
yielded this morning to tho sympathetic ef
fect of tho acute weakness In United States
Steel stocks and fell generally from 1 to 2
points below last night's level for tho prin
cipal stocks. After the tpeculatlvo liquida
tion In tho United States Steel Issues had
spent its force thero wns an nctlvo rally In
tho market, led by Union Paclllc, and tho
wholo of tho transcontinental group. Tho
driving to cover of tho considerable short
account which was put out yesterday and
this morning In tho downward course of
prices helped on tho recovery ot tho latter
part of tho day. Tho closing was very ac
tlvo nnd strong, with prices aggressively
on tho upgrade. The recovery In tho steel
stocks, wuh not decisive and thoy closed at
not losses of io ftir tho common nnd pre
ferred. Tho cxtroinn declines wero 214 for
thn preferred nnd 114 for tho cbmmon. Con
sidering tho fact that rumors recently in
circulation had placed tho not earnings of
tho United States Steel corporation for the
quarter at ns high as $38,000,000 and that
other rumors had had nlleged avcrnge
monthly enrnlngs of $12,000,000, tho actual
figures for tho quarter. $29,751,G16, wero
naturally a disappointment, especially ns
tho threo months showed successive do
cllncs down to tho estimate for December
of less than $8,000,000. An Increase of only
about $1,000,000 over tho previous quarter
was considered unsatisfactory, ns that pre
vious quarter Included tho period of tho
costly strlko nnd reports of current trado
havo bopn enthusiastic for some time past.
Tho enormous nbsorptltm ofUnlon Pnclllo
and Its aggressive recovery to 10114 from
tho early low level of 101 wns an cffcctlvo
factor In soothing the uneasiness caused by
tho proceedings ngnlnst the Northern Se
curities comnnnv In tint minronin rniirt
"Owing to tho wldo reaching Importnnco nt-
uiciieii 10 mis wnoiotsunjcct tno resiliency
of this group of stocks had a notable sen

was no news to explain tho movement, un
less It might, bo due to a report that tho
Interstate Commerco commission had nd
Journed Its proposed Inquiry Into tho nf
fnlrs of tho Northern Securities compnny"
until later In the month. Tho excuse of
fered by tho United States Steel authori
ties .thnt car shortage and freight blockades
had affected their earnings wait takon as
renewed confirmation that tho railroads had
all ho business they could handle. Tho
speculators used this as a favorabto argu
ment for tho rally in the railroads. Somo
what 'Inconsistently lasft week's sharp do--crease
In gross earnings In some soft coal
carriers was attributed also tn car short
age. Rock Island was strong on the largo
net earnings for November. Tho movemont
In Sugar was characteristic of nn annual
meeting day. Tho rlso to 124 was 'attributed
to tho appenl by tho president of tho com
pnny for tho abolition of tho duty on raw
sugar. Tho seeming certainty that no gold
will go out this week and tho hopo that
next week's probnblo outgo will bo offset
by receipts of cash from' other sources
helped on tno Into rally. Tho llrmness of
'Amalgamated Copper and American Smelt

movement of copper.
Tho bond mnrket wns snmowhnt Irreg

United Stntcs bonds wero nil unchnnged on
the last call.
Tho Commercial Advertiser's T.nmlnn

French nnd English sales. Tho imminence
of Parliament was partly responsible for
tho weakness of .consols. Rio tlntos reacted
to 39 and Anacondas to G33 on tho break
In Amalgamated, while copper, sold at 47H

CATTLE There 'was not a very heavy
run of cattle here today for tho middlo
of tho week and us packers seemed to have
qtitto' liberal orders tho market ruled ac
tive and stronger all around. Buyers
started out In good season and It wns not
long before thu bulk of tho offerings was
disposed of.
Thero was a fair sprinkling of cornfed
steers In tho receipts today und tho mar
ket could bafely be v quoted strong und ac
tive. In somo cases sales wero mado that
looked 60 und oven 10c higher than tho
samo kinds sold for yesterday. Tho de
mand was genernl for tho better grades as
well us for tho shortfeds, but H could not
bo said that anything very cholco was
offered.
Thero was also oonslderablo activity to
tho cow trado and thu market was strong
to a dlmo higher. It was noticcablo that
tho kliuls that sold so slowly nnd ut such
tuievcn prices yesterday changed hands
freely today at stronger prices. Tho Im
provement today then was mostly 011 tho
dinners end medium grades, though, tho
choicer bunches ulsa sold 'at strong prices.
Bulls moved much moro freely today
than yesterday und brojght strong prices.
Tho same was true of stags, una Veal
culves were also In good demand ut strong
prices.
Thero wero only, a few Blockers and feed
ers In tlio yurds today that .were at all
good and tho demand was sutllclent to taku
what was offered ut fully steady prices.
Tho demand Is good for both light and
heavyweight cattle, but tho quality" must
bo good. Common kinds aro moro or less
ncgiec'lcd. Representative sulcs:
