.OVERBOUGHT WHEAT MARKET THE CAUSE
Trade in 'the Lending- Cereal Win
Large and Extremely Scrvom, nnl
Decline Occnr with Great
Rapidity.
CHICAGO, Jnn. 7. Dulls In nil tho grain
pits experienced setbacks after yesterday s
soaring markots. An over-bought wheat
market Influenced tho declines. May wheat
leglstcrtd a not loss of 01c, May corn
?ic and May oats ic. Provisions 01080 60

Trade In wheat wob largo and extremck'
nervous. Jumps of 'its In either direction
occurred with great rapidity. A tense feci
lng was present throughout tho session,
based largely on an over-bought stato of
the market. Thcro was still a decidedly
bullish tone prevailing as a result of tho
higher outslda markets,. especially In the
southwest. Hut tho crowd seemed afraid
to carry' any very largo lots and ran on
any nppearance of a selling movement. Tho
bearish factor that started, tho dccllno was
the unexpected weak condition of tho
Liverpool market. Tho only explahatlon
offered for tho slump abroad was that It
was a natural result of the heavy advanco
tho day before. Influenced by tho foreign
loan, May opened weak. KttW lower, at
klJihlUc. Hears at once began outline, out
lOiort lines and there was a continued weak
tone. Then came a rush of outside buying
orders, which took In everything offered.
Price made up their loss quickly, but sell
ing seemed popular and there were re
peated sags. Minneapolis reported an ad
vanco of 10c In flour nnd a good cash do
innfid, and tho winter wheat belt still com
plained of a lack of molHturc. Tho bull
onthutlasm wavered and though May sold
to M'ic, liquidation soon brought a loss of
3c and a weak close, Tdfilc down, at MJ4f
?3ic. lxical rocelpts wcro CO cars, one. of.
contract grade. Minneapolis and Dulutn
reported 324 car making a total for tho
thrc o points of Ml cars, against 629 last
week nnd 571 a yeur ago. Primary receipts
were only 43,00o bu.. compared with 661,000
Inst ytar. Seaboard clearances In wheat
and flour equaled 669,000 bu.
Corn experienced tho some early troublo
us wheat. Tin" enthusiasm of tho day bo
forn In tho Liverpool market seemed to
have vanished and today's cables were
weak In spite, of tho better feeling hero
jestcrduy. Tho main Influence wan tuo'
wheat market, which this pit followed
inlekly on tho declines, but not sq well on
the .recoveries. Tho country seemed to bo
offering more corn, as was Indicated by

Trudo wiiiT extremely heavy, that In July
tiling tho most Important. Although tho
close In May showed a decline and July
did not hold all Its advance, traders wero
predicting a bull movement In tho latter
delivery. The argument that was back of
the heavy lull speculation In July was that
numerous professionals have been selling
th!s option Miort In Inrgo quantities. July
lias ranged 60 or 7c under May almost rvor
since It began to bo quoted. Hulls ridi
culed tho I'Jeii that thero should bo such a
divergence in prices and began to buy
heavily, July gained Hie, though It closed
with a net gain of only vie nt ioc. Mny
gained some strength from this Influence,
in well as from the scanty and poor condi
tion of local stocks. Tho near fuUiro
opened slightly lower, with the other
grains, sold up quickly on bulling to fc,

Provisions'1 'were dull nnd lower. The
bearish Incentives wero a largo run of Iiokh

NEW YOnlf. Jnn. 7 Tlin Rtoek market

market In London. Both of these stocks
yielded, however, beforo tho closo. There
was n rather palpable effort to Induce
speculation Into the Industrials, whllo the
railroads wcro sold to take prollts. .Tho
United Steel stocks wcro made tho leaders
on tho strength of the general expectation
that a variable showing of earnings would
be made at tho day's meeting of directors,
which was not ncid until .niter tne maricet
had closed. Tho extreme advance hi tho

stocks of tho various express companies
mado notnblu advances, reaching 10 points

the extra dividend disbursements and large
business. Tho Inclination to sell stocks
seems to bo based on general considera
tions of distrust of tho money outlook nnd
of tho present high level of prices. Net
losses of between 1 nnd 3 points are quite
genurnl among prominent stocks,
Tho i bond market wus affected by tho
weakness of stocks. Total sales, par value,

CATTLE There was the heaviest run of
cattle hero today that has arrived n somo
time past, and as other market were all
quoted lower prices at this point also took
a tumble.- The quality of the offerings
was rather Inferior, which also nnd a bad
Influence on the market.
There with nulls a few comfed steers

fairly well, however, and In a good many
cases sales were made that looked just
about steady with yesterday, in otner in
stances, though, the market was plainly
a dime lower. The better grades, of course,
sold more freeeiy and declined ino least.
Owing to tho liberal receipts and slow
market It was lato before anything like u
clenrance was made.
The cow market was also slow and lower
and prices broke worso tnan on steers, mo
nailer ffmoes said witnnut miicn irouoie at
toady to a shade lower prices, but aside
from those tho market was weak to a dime
lower than yesterday. The greatest decline
was on tno medium graaes, ana in u goou
many rases sales were made that looked
a good deal lower than the same kind sold
lor yesterday.
Bulls and stags also eased off today In
sympathyp with tho decline on steers and
cows. Veal calves held close to steady
where tho quality was good.
Stockers and feeders were In light supply
today and the demand wata sulllclcnt to
take what was offered at good steady
prices. The light cattle, as well as tho
heavyweights, sold freely where the quality
was satisfactory, but cattle of all weights
inovod slowly unless iney wero goou.
Representative sales:
BEEF STEERS.
