There was a quick response In the money market, where enormous of ferings of funds curried the rate down to 0 per cent. Standing loans were all readily marked down to that rate on request of the borrowers. There was a palpable shift ing of speculative accounts from Reading to United Slates Steel, and there were similar advances in other parts of the market. Transactions In I nlted States Steel were on a large scale and those stocks held their advantage more firmly than the general market Tin re was strength In a number of cen tral tr.iflle and western railroads. Wa bashea were conspicuous Toledo. St Louis & Western stocks were unusually active on rumors of absorption by the Vanderbllt Interests. On the other hand, all the re Cently speculative favorites were .under acute pressure. These Included the coalers. eSpeclall) Reading, grangers and Pacifies. An ostentatious advance ol 3'i in tire.it Northern preferred and bidding up of Northern Securities company on nominal transactions in the outside market failed tu deter speculators from selling the Pa cifies. The easing of the money rate was accompanied by higher rates for foreign exchange and the simultaneous relapse bf sterling exchange In Paris narrows the margin Inward the point of profit In gold exports. Today's statement of the Im perial Hank of Oermatiy completes the showing of the natonlshlng proportions of the year s end demand on all the great foreign banks. That banks loan account for the week was expanded upwards of $33.0011,11110 nnd the note circulation Increased over $86,000,000 But the foreign money markets are promptly responding to the January dlsburaamenta and are ail bacon lug easier. The Indication! art that our own clearing house statement tomorrow will show 11 gain of upward of $7,000,000 A further cut In the price of copper was a slightly disturbing fac tor, and the reports of requests for extension of accommodation by a large promoting syndicate In Ohio received some consideration, The market Closed active arid aasj at about the lowest. The market for bonds was active and loon. I. but still somewhat Irregular. Total sal.s. par value, 15,100,000. United States bonds were all unchanged on the lust call. The Commercial Advertisers London financial cablegram says: The stock mar ket today was active and linn as a whole, with the bouyancy In South African shares absorbing the bulk of Interest. The market opened rather early ami It was evident from the atari that packers all had liberal orders to till. The cattle began to move to ward the scales at an cany hour and it was not long before the bulk Ol the cattle had changed hands Itei elnts Included omparallvely few com fed steers of desirable quality, Pack ers, though, took bold in good shape and the general market was fully, steady with yesterday. The prices paid. however, seemed to be rather uneven and some sales looked considerably stronger than others. The demand was of course heavier for the cattle showing quality, but still the hall' fat kinds sold lor fully as much ns the same grade brought yesterday. The big end of the receipts today con sisted id low stuff, but the demand was equal to the supply and the market could be quoted active und steady to strong. The better grades moved more freely than the dinners and medium glades, but still even those sold at fully as much ns they would have brought yesterday. There was not enough change In the prices paid for bulls, veal calves and stags to be worthy of mention. The belter grades sold readily, while common kinds were neglected the same as usual. There were so few Blockers and feeders In the vnrds this morning that there was not the usual weakness noticed toward the close of ihe week. The better grades this morning sold treely at stcad.v to strong prices bu! of course the common kinds, ,,,.i nVvtlnularly Blockers of poor quality. iw OOFFEK-Snot irdov.i, 7'v'iillc vv I li : ,.,.,. ncltlcctcd ' i resentatlv sales usual. NEW YORK, Jan. 3.-Braflstreet's to morrow will say: Satisfaction with the old and confidence In the new year are the dominant features of the entire Industrial, commercial and financial situation. The Iron and Bl el situation gains activity The oar shortage question cuts a disturbing figure. Sup pltei of coke at the ovens are piling up. hut the blast furnaces are shutting down becaust Of ihe necessary link between the two. an abundance of curs not being furth coming. Southern pig Iron has advanced 50c per ton tnd the western trade Is getting its chlsf supplies from this source. Besse mer Iron ore has been advanced In price. The only appearance of weakness In fin ished products Is In wire and nails, which are 12 a ton lower, owing to Increased com petition of outside niakeis Floods in the mining regions have interfered with pro duction and the car shortage still accent u iites the scarcity of coal, particularly bi tuminous. Anthracite supplies are small, notwithstanding n total production last year In excess of 511.000,000 tons, a total of i2 per cent less than ever before produced Prices show few changes on the week. The cereals are on the whole higher, due mainly to the strength of wheat, which still supports the coarser grains. Winter wheat crop reports are lit, the main favor able. Provisions are steady, except lard, which has weakened slightly Cotton has been shaded a little because of large re- etots Cotton kooiIh are unlet, as Is usual at this date, but closed the year 19ol much better than they began It. Fall River dividends are slightly lower than the aver age In 19"0. with the mills producing the better class of goods showing the best re turns. Ginghams are In s lally good shape, being largely sold ahead, and tVrm. Woolen goods, though less active, are In good shape and mills are busily employed. Wool Is steadv. nnd a good movement is reported Higher priOM ore looked for at the Lindop ..ale. (juiciness Is the feature In Hie leather and kindred trades Shoe shipments are smaller than of late but still In excess of a year ago. Complaints of small profits In shoe manufacturing continue and prices apparently must advance If present rates for leather art to be paid. New prices for rubber goods show nn advance of 8 per cent on a year ago. Copper has been again cut, this time to 12c for Lake Superior, and tin Is also lower, Kansas City Live Stock Market. In a good many Instances sellers hud onnslderahli difficulty In disposing or that kind ut any Many arguments have been put forth as to ihe real cause of the immense wealth of John D. Rockefeller and other great oil magnates. It Is easy to trnce the founda tion of their great wealth. Not many years ago oil wnt- discovered In the state of Peiin sylvnnln, the How became so greut that It was Impossible to take care ot the output, as the marketable facilities were not great enough, coiiseiiucntly the price of stock in the different enterprises remained at a normal ligure. Hut lar-slghted men like Rockefeller. Payne and others bought up nu much stock ns they could at these low figures, and when American Ingenuity sup plied the marketable facilities the stock shot skyward, laying the foundation for the fabulous wealth of these multimillion aires. The same, exact conditions are now 11. evidence In the lleaumont, Texas and California oil llelds. and there Is no doubt In the wot Id but that history will repeat Itself.
