CHICAOO, Dec. 27.-Dlsappolntlng cables Mil better weather, together with com paratlvo weakness lu northwestern mar kets, caused a c drop In May wheat today. May corn closed Hfftic and May D.its c lower. Provisions wcro actlvo and Brm, closing 6fi7c higher. Tho Liverpool opening after tho holiday vacation showed lack iof appreciation of recent advances on this Bide. Tho market had poor support, save when closo to 82c, nr in Dial Ml-lire. It was nwlnc to buying t this prlco that upparcntly saved tho market irom further decline. Tho pur chasing operations wero credited to manip ulators. Tho selling was largely In tho way of profit-taking, longs being moved thereto by tho comparative cheapness of the May option at Minneapolis and Duluth, M well ns thu bearish Items at hand nt tho Opening. Duluth was 3c under Chicago and Minneapolis lfHc lower, putting thorn al most on a shipping basis with Chicago. I'ho close was steady, c down at "Sc. Local receipts wcro 61 carB. nono of contract rrnde. Minneapolis und Duluth reported 19 cars, making a total for the three points cf 513 cars, against 33 last week and 311 a fear iigo. Primary receipts wero 619,000 bushels, compared with 0o7,0i Inst year. Seaboard clearances were 884,000 bushels. Tho corn market was again dull und fea tureless, tho speculative crowd having flrlfted to wheat. Keeling was still bearish nwing to tho slackness of tho cash sltua lion, and the Idea that an Increase In tho movement Is Imminent. May sold between and Mfj 0614c and closed easy, i'(iv4o under yesterday at tWiHc. Receipts were ISO cars. Oats wero exceptionally dull, business lielng almost entirely of a scalping ordor. The tone was easier In sympathy with wheat and corn. At Its best May was n vhudii under last night's close. May sold between 45ff45e und 45c. and closed so down at 461c. Receipts worn 210 cars. Provisions were strong and generally ac tive, owing chlclly to a light run of hogs und higher prices In tho market at thn yards. There was a good country demand us well as support from packers. Wheat recovered most of tho re cent moderate decline, supported by a fairly steady demand. Notwithstanding the high level of quotations ns compared with earlier years exports for tho week from all parts of the United Suites, Including Hour, amounted to 3,540,972 bushels, eompaiid with 2,756,011 n year ngo and 2,417.01s two years ago. Interior receipts wcro light and Hour mills navo neen nannicappcd by tlio car shortage, which made It dllllcult to bring lu raw materlnl or take out the llntslied product. Corn continues about 00 per cent above the prlco a year ngo, which readily ex plains exports of only 313.25.1 bushels, against :S,:95. 155 Inst yenr. Sugar became conspicuous through thu ngcresslvo cuttlmr of quotations by' computing refiners, Raw grades declined slightly on account ot big crop estimates nnd other outsldo Inlluences, inn inn inn in standard grades was dispro portionately heavy and nt the bottom point after deducting all rebates no prollt could bo figured. Even nt the lowest prlco buy ers wero slow to take ndvautnge, evidently anticipating more favornhle terms. Tlio mnrket has gono up so rapidly this week that prices are rather uneven, which makes some sales look a good deal higher thun others. There wero only a few cornfed steers on sale this morning nnd nil of those that did arrlvu were of tho short-fed variety. Ono hunch was good enough to bring J6.25. but they were not what would be called choice. Packers, however, wanted some cattle and bought up everything that was offered lu good senson. The general market loday could safely be quoted' strong to n dime higher thun yesterday. Tho cow market was also active and stronger. All tho buyers were out early and most of tho sales looked strong to 10c higher than yesterday's prices. Tho market, however, Is very uneven and as compared with tho closo of last week sales today were nil tho way from 25c to 6oo. higher. There was a good demand for packer bulls this mornltn; at strong prices. Veal calves and stags also sold readily nt stronger prices, Tho supply of stockers and feeders wns limited und so also was the demand. Good heavy feeders would probably havo sold at right around stendy prices, but no ono teemed to want tho stockers nnd the com mon grades of all weights. Sellers found It a dllllcult matter to dispose of that clasn of cattle at any price. Itcprescnta tlvo sales: UEEF STEERS. No. !!!! l.., 26.., Av. .. 750 ..1200 ..1660 ..108O .. 933 .. 82S IT. No. Av. HOGS There was another light run of hogs hero todny and, as the demand was nctlvo prices advanced sharply. The prlmo heavyweights sold largely front J. 46 to 16.70. good mixed hogs sold mostly from J6.30 to J6.45, nnd the lightweights brought mostly from 16.15 to J6.25.
