CHICAGO, Dec. 20. The flrmncfs of the
grain markfts, dropping off In domestic
receipts, HCiirclty of red winter wheat and
the general cftect of the extreme cold
weather made grnln traders forget all
about the holiday depression today nnd
May wheat cloyed Tie higher, May torn 14c
up and May outs UttVie higher Provisions
cloHed tinrliatiKed to Ult'ulfic higher.
Condltlonx in wheat wen- Inilllxh nil
around at tho opening. Trade wim Inclined
to continue In Its dull rut, hut with .such
arguments for better prices traders who
did wish to gel Into deal had to hid Up
for everything they bought. (Jablos wcro
llrm, Lnndcn reported no cargoes arriving
or waiting off cons I and local houses with
cable connection! claimed better accept
ances by the continent. Receipts were ex
usperatlngly small and tho cold weather
promised Mill smaller for tomorrow. Tho
car shortage at Minneapolis retarded move
ments thero of both wheat and Hour und
threatens to be the causa of closing up
moro mills, In the west nnd southwest
severe drops In temperature wero recorded,
In some places enow was falling and In
others tho thermometer registered balow
xnro. with no protection by snow. Com
mission .houses began to buy on these fact
ors and prices steadily advanced. May
opened Uw?ic up at 79i79Hc and closed
strong, 4o up, at SOUc. I.ocal receipts were
37 cars, none of contract grade. Minne
apolis und Duluth reported 360 cars, making
a total for the three polntH of 393 cars,
against 814 last week and Gil last year.
Argentine shipments for tho week wero
100,000 bu., against 292.000 last week. Prim
ary receipts were 618,000 bu., compared with
052,000 n year ago, Seaboard clearances
were 617,0O bu.
Corn had a narrow nnd nervous market,
with but h small truile, Hmull receipts and
the wheat firmness left a better character
to this market, but on the whole business
wns Inslgnlllcant and followed In its ac
customed rut of the last few days. The.
scarcity of offerings, both hero und nt
Kansas City, kept tradors nwako to op
portunities and hovering about the Tit to
get In on any decided action. May opened
well up on lighter cables and advanced by
nnrrow margins to a llrm close, ',4c up, nt
604c. Receipts wero 102 can).
Oats followed after corn und wheat. Tho
trade was small, but the strength In the
other pits offset the slowness of the rash
situation and brought slightly butter prices.
May was llrm at the opening and eloped
with a gooil tone, 'ifilio up, at 4lfi45c.
Itecelpts were 89 cars.
Provisions were llrm, considering tho
weakness of tho hog market. Prices wero
off, but a splurge camo toward the close,
in sympathy with grains. Mny pork closed
12M15: up at JU;.7Vi, May lard unchanged
at J9.721, und May ribs b'al'Ae higher at
$8.67' i.
Estimated rerelpts for tomorrow: Wheat,
10 cars; corn, 10f cars; oats, 160 cars; bogs,

Weeuiy Review of Trade tomorrow will
say:
Holiday trnde reached Its maximum this
week, nearly all sections of the country
reporting exceptionally largo distribution.
hllo tne einse of goods especially stimu
lated by Christmas dematm occupied tho
position of greatest prominence, gener.il
merchandise was not far behind in ac
tivity. Transporting Interests were 1u.it
beginning to overcome congested conditions
when severe storms made the situation
moro complicated than before. In many
Industries It Is not u qucftlon of llnd.ug
burs, but securing thu privilege of poit
poulng deliveries beyond tho date originally
sped lied.
Retarded shipments caused higher prices
for prompt delivery of pig It on und steel
products at western cities, but conserva
tism still marks thu course of producers
regarding contracts of the future. In a
few cases tho enlarged capacity makes
It possible to promNe concessions on fu
ture business, wire nails especially show
ing the effect of competition.
Weather conditions lire responsible for
tho slower movement of pipe. In which
concessions nro secured. 1'lg Iron has
risen slightly on account of tho short fuel
supply nnd Injury to furnuces by the
storm, Despite the present unparalleled
demand, prices nro 33 pet cent lower than
during the Inflation of Y.f), Indicating the
better basis on which tho mnrket Is now
estubllshed.
Although the lending metal Is enjoying
exceptionally satisfactory conditions, It Is
very different with tho minor metals, owing
mainly to thu fuel thut ilctltlous prices
huvu been asked by tho leading producers.
General reductions occurred during the lust
week, copper now being sold at 13?il:)'4o
and lead at Ic. The declines wero heavy,
but failed to produce activity, buyers look
Ing for still better' terms.
Footwear shops continue nctlvo business,
leading producers us n rule having good
orders for spring Hues, although smaller
concerns tire not all ns fortunately sltu
uted, Firm prices prevail und specialties
command premiums. Thero Is no accumu
lation or 'outlier awl prices are decidedly
firm.
In the textile Industries now lines of
woolen goods opened sntlsfactortly, some
leing almost immeuiuteiy witnurnwn, owing
o tlio volume of business secured. Ad
vances arc paid for certain lines of worsted,
n cotton goods there Is much business of
fered, but sellers aro unwilling to accept
largo contracts for future delivery, whllu
the raw material market remains un
settled. Print cloths are unchanged for
regulurj, with nnrrow odds llrm and cotton
urns generally nigner. uist wcok s gains
n these lines ure fully maintained.
In the uraln market wheat has held fairly
steady nt some reaction from last week's
exceptionally high point, nnd thero Is still
mucli evidence ot a nrm undertone. c-
eru weuther stimulated the western de
mand for live stock feeding nnd also In

splendid gum over lust yeur, tuero was nn
outgo of only 3.0I0.S13 bu. from tho United
States, Hour included, agninst 4,360,300 n

Corn Is nlso well sustained, western re
ceipts for the week reaching only 2,519.R."1

exports of 211.214 hu., against 4,715,109 a

toward current quotations.
Cotton Is little cliunged nt about -c below

too low. Mill conditions, both here und
abroad, Indicate a good consumptive 'de

the nc.Vt few Weeks should ilecldn the
question of prices, although there Is nl
ways the possibility of delayed shipments
by plnntcrs. If tho olllclal estimate of the
