NKW YOHK, Dec. 18,-Tho principal ef
fort of operators In stocks today continued
to bo to koIvp tho enigma of the copper
question. The erratic tluctuatlons of Amal
gamated Copper retlected tho uncertainty
of tho mind of the professional operntnrs,
who largely monopolized the dealings.
Traders of the class who usually depend
upon the toss of a copper or tho aggressive
leuders of large operators foi actuating
motive talked glibly of technical conditions
In tho trade. Tho weakness yesterday In
Amalgamated .Copprr which continued this
morning, was due to the assumption that
thero would bo further declines In tho prlco
of tho company's product. The rally of 44
points In the price of tho stock after the
reduction of selling prices by tho United
Metals .Selling company Indicated that yes
terday's selling was by professional bears
and wns overdone.
Tho fact that tho former difference be
tween Loke Superior and electrolytic cop
per was nnrrowed by today's changes was
taken ns an Indication of an adjustment of
differences of opinion between the control
ling Interests Iti Amalgamated Copper and
Calumet ft Heclu, ua It has been supposed
that tho latter Interests maintained that
Amalgamated Copper had an unduo ad
vantage from tho relative cheapness of
electrolytic copper. Mnny rumors were In
dustriously circulated of progress toward
adjustment of all the Into unsettling In
fluences In tho copper situation.

CATTLE Thero was a fair run of cattle
here today, receipts being about the tuuno
as they were ono nnd two weeks ago. The
heavy fall of snow mndo the cattle show
up In bad form, and ns 11 result packers In
n great many lnstunces trlul to buy their
supplies at a llttlo lower prices than they
did yesterday. Another bear intluonoo were
tho reports rrom Chicago showing the gen
eral market there to be a illmo lower.
There wero very few cornfed steers In
tlio yards of good to choice quality, and
as a result packers paid about steady
prices for bundle answering to that de
scription. Tho commoner grades, however,
did not move any too freely. In some cases
they brought steady prices, while In others
they sold a shade lower.
The cow market was fairly active this
morning on the better grades, und prices
were not far from steady. Packers seemed
to want what was offered and paid Just
about tho same prices they did yesterday.
The nu-dlum grades and canners wero not
quite us ready sellers und occasionally had
to take 'less money than they sold for yes
terday. Thero wns hardly enough chnngo In tho
prices paid for bulls, veal calves und stags
tn he worthy of mention. Whero tho dual
ity was ut nil sntlsfuctory tho market held
just about steady.
Stockers und feeders wero scarco this
morning and tho better grades sold at
strong prices. Anything weighing from
80 pounds up sold ut very satisfactory
prices, as high as $1.10 and $4.20 being paid
for somo cnttle of good quality. Cattle
weighing under 800 pounds wero rather neg
lected and in some cases sold lower. Hepro
