by tho fact that tho Vnnderbllt Influences
havo now secured control of a through lino
with tho addition of tho Northwestern ami
ho Union Pucillc, nnd tho Pennsylvania
would supposedly Rtrlvo to do tho sumo.
Tho only Hues left out of Chlcngo for it
to secure, however, would bo tho Santa Fo
and tho Rock Island, and tho latter Is con
sidered tho moro feasible of tho two.
Another Interesting featuro ot tho changn
u tho personnel of tho official roster ot
ho Rock Islnud, but ono that Is probably
detnehed from tho first, Is that tho Mooro
nfluonce on tho bonrd of directors has boon
nerensed by tho addition of another of tho
Mooro brothers to tho 111. Mr. Purdy
resigned not only from tho presltloncy, but
from tho dlrectornto as well, nnd J. If.
Mooro was elected to succeed him In tho
latter position. This innktvi tho second
ono of tho Mooro brothers on tho list ot
thirteen, W. II. Mooro having been placed
thoro last May.
Just what this means cannot ho learned
In Omaha. It is known that tho Moares
nro potent factors In the Diamond match
comblno and In tho Tinplnto trust, hut that
they now possess n speaking lufluenco In
tho rcnnsylvania railroad Is doubted, on
that system Is said to bo owned largely in
Philadelphia. That tho strength of tho
Moorcs In Rock Island matters la now
becoming supreme, however, cannot bo
doubted, when It Is seen with what enso
this lnllucnco has plncod at the head of tho
system Mr, Leeds,
By railroaders, howovor, Mr. Purdy's res
ignation Is not assigned to any business
necessity or shutout. Ho Is known to havo
suffered from locomotor ataxia tor somo
time, and when ho was last In Omnha hla
hands shook so thnt ho could scarcely con
trol them. Ho has been unfit to nttend
actively to largo business Interests for somo
tlmo from this rnuso, and this is said to
explain entirely his resignation from tho
presidency nnd also from tho hoard nt
directors,
REDELL HEARING GOES OVER

anil Morn Hoar.
It Is llkoly thnt tho Board of Kirn nnd
Pollco Commissioners will not hear tho
charges preferred against John Redell, sus

At a brief meeting of tho board hold yes-

that no action bo taken until forty days
havo clapoed since tho recent declslnu of
tho supremo court, This recommendation
was muiln at tho request of Hcdell's attor
neys. Although tho members of tho board
did not ngroo to allow tho hearing to bor
delayed, they adjourned without sotting a
date for tho trial, and withMho tacit un
derstanding that City Attorney Connoll'a
suggestion will ho acted upon.
Tho board Instructed tho secretary to
opon correspondence with manufacturers of
flre-flghtlng apparatus and to sccuro priced

tha suggestion ot Mayor Moorcs tho mem
bers of the board decided to purchnso four
new hoso wagons and a now flro engine.
Two of tho now hoso wagons will bo with
standplpa attnehmont nnd nil four will bo
of the latest Improved pattern and will coat
about 11,000 each. The carts now In uso
will bo aunt to tho outlying flrehouscs and
tho Improved wagons will bo kept In tho
central portion of tho city. It Is likely that
tho new engine will be placed In No, 2 flro
houso, as tho englno at that houso Is in had
condition.
A short timo ago 3,000 feet of now hosn

that at least 7,000 additional feet nt new
hoso must be purchased as soon ns next
year's funds nro avatlablo. It l probable
that at least two now llrehounon will ho es
tablished noxt year.
In discussing tho need of additional firs
stations Mayor Moorcs said: "Tho whole
sale district of tho ctty must havo a well
equipped flrchouso, I think tho corner of
Tenth and Jackson streeto would ho a gootl
location. Tho proporty Interests In that
portion of tho city aro so great and aro ot
so much Importanco to tho prosperity ot
tho city that thoy cannot bo allowod to go

bo a flrohouso somowhero west ot tho new

afford protection to tho now school building
