, NEW YORK, Dec. 12. -Speculative liqui
dation continued In the stock market, today,
Indured by the stringency in money, which
ran tho rail loan rate up 12 per cent nt one
time, and forced a good share of liquida
tion. Othtr selling was precautionary In
fear of still more stringent conditions In the
money market. A very material element In
the day s mnrket was the short selling and
beurs who became emboldened by the sag
in the market and put out largo short lines.
When the. market turned the bears found
ihey hud been following the decline too
closely nnd they helped on the rally by
bidding ugalnst each other to get back
slocks.
The rally came when tho banks enme Into
tho exchange for tho llrst tlmu Into In the
day and ortered largo sums at the prevail
ing rate, which wns at the high level. With
tho satisfaction of the demand by theso
ofterlngs the rato fell away and the pres.
sure on the slock market wns quickly re
laxed. The dealings by tho bears wns the
one element In tho rally. This wns not
fully held nnd tho market closed irregular.
The few fractional advances which hud
hi-eii rsinbllshed on the rally were wllicd
out before tho close mid losses aru shown
throughout.
Them Is nothing obscure nbout the situa
tion nr Hiii ninnev market. With stirnlus
reserves shown to bo below $7,0OO,l"J0 In last
Saturday's bunk statement, and with largo
seasonable requirements for credits known
to be impending, 11 was onvinus inai inc
mniiev siitmlv would bo limited. The outgo
or gold Is continuing, in spite of tho need
fur money, today showing a withdrawal of
$5(0,000 from the subtreasury lor shipment
on Saturday, said to bo for Hrazll. Tho re
newed demand tor the Interior Is also an
unexpected development and was continued
today with tho transfer of $100,000 to Nuw
Orleans.
'he redemptions of government bonds
nro not offset by the requirements of tho
suotreasury, as is shown by yesterday s
net gain by the Institution of $138,000, in
spite of payment In redemption ot bonds
of upward of $1,600,000. Today's payment
for the same account of over JoOO.OnO there
fore affords little relief from tho drain upon
tho market on account of tho routine sub
treasury operations. The available supply
of government bonds lor redemption nws
grown exceedingly scarce, nnd not much
further relief Is expected on that account.
The anticipated payment of government
Interest will not bo available to the money
MiurUnt until iinxt. week. The speculative
liquidation, both In slocks and In grains, is
presumably affecting some nutomatlc relief
to me money situation, uui uuku numn

CATTLE There was not a nartlcularly
heavy run of cattle here today, bin dtlll
thero was hot tho llfo and nctlvlty to the
market that Is noted on somo dnys. That
was perhaps due to Borne extent to the
inci mat ino quality wns noinint; cah.
Thnrn wrn nnlv nhnllt ttm nr llftl-en cars
of cornfed steers In the yards, so that tho
more desirable grades sold at Just about
steady prices. The common and half-fat
stuff, though, did not movo any too freely
and prices In a number of Instances wero
a shade lower than yesterday.
The 'cow market was not very acuvo mis
morning, but about steady with yester
day's close. The Inst half of tho market
vfMt..rdn v n-iui not ns eood as the first pnrt
and packers bought their supplies today
about the way they did late yesterday.
The cholcor grades have not declined much
tho last two days, out medium kiiiob nnu
dinners are weak to 6M10c lower,
Thero was very little change noticeable
tmlnv In thn nrlees null! for bulls, calves
and stags, but It was evident that packers
did not caro for the commoner kinds, and
as a result tncy moveu very siowiy.
Blockers and feeders wero In light sup
ply, but at the some time there were fully
as many of the common kinds as were
wanted. Tho demand for cattle of that
description has been very light for somo
tlmo pnst and the tendency of prices is
downward. Tho good heavyweight feeders
and prime yearlings solo, about steady
'"rhf.ro wero a few rango cattlo Included
In tho receipts today, but hardly enough
... ln i, ii. mI nf thn market. In most
cases they fluctuated about tho same us tho
natives, iiepreseuiaiivii buiuu.
