A very pleasant reception was tendered nov, Jacob Flook at the resldenco of Mr. and Mm. J, r. Anderson at 2916 North Twenty-ninth street, about sixty friends and former church members being present. Mesdames Brady, Warren Ilogers, Klrkcn dall, C. E. McShane: the Misses McShnne, Dowey, Caldwell and Ijmax, were the guests of Mrs. John A. McShane at a luncheon at the Omaha club on Tuesday. Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Cahltl, assisted by Mr. nnd Mrs. Frank A. Freeman, enter tained Friday evening at the Winona in honor of their niece, Miss May Fowler of Sharon, Pa. Dancing was tho order of the ovenlng. Whist was the order of tho afternoon, tho prizes bo lng won by Mm. M. Degen of Sioux City. Mrs. Sam Wurthhclmer and Mrs. Leon Cllne of Pittsburg. Mrs. W. U Harris and Mrs. E. Sollgsohn entertained two of tho pleasant parties of tno week, tho first being a high live party, on Thursday afternoon, at which twenty flvo guests wero present; and tho second on Saturday afternoon, when an equal number wcro present. Tho latter nffalr was most novel, tho room bolng furnished to rcpro sent a schoolroom and tho afternoon given over to games and contests upon thomos of tho schoolroom order. Tho Tuesday afternoon meeting of the South Sldo Whist club was held at the homo of Mrs. J. B. Blanchard on Georgia avenue, prizes being awarded to Mrs. Taggart and Mrs. Crickmore. At the conclusion of the games jin elaborate hrnchoon was served, tho guosts nlf bolngscatod nt ono table, which was handsomely decorated with yel low and whlto chrysanthemumus. Tho next meeting will be held at tho; homo of Mrs, u. K. uryson, 2022 St. Mary's avenue. A party of about fifty Omaha people went down to Fort Crook on JiVedncsday evening In response to tho invitation of tho offi cers and women of the fort to participate in mo hop given by them at tho Officers club. A special train conveyed the party there, the ambulances meetlig them at tho station and taking them to the fort, Tho hall was golly decorated with flags and brilliantly lighted. Tho party was greeted by Colonel and Mrs. Lincoln, Ma jor ana Mrs. Van Vllet, Major Klrby, Colo nel Ewers, Mr. nnd Mrs. Wade and Mr. nnd Mrs. Reed, who constituted the re ceiving party. Punch was served through out the evening aud about 11 o'clock sup per was served, tho party roturnlng to town immediately afterward. Tho affair was one of tho most enjoynblo of the fall and there aro many who nro hoping It Is but tho first of many Buch during the winter. Tho Metropolitan club gave a unlauo en tertainment on Thanksgiving eva In its ciubroom, Twenty-third nnd Harnoy streets Tho affair was supposed to be a takeoff on a beer garden, with vaudovlllo. A more beautiful sight could hardly bo Imagined man me club presented. Tho danco hall was simply a forest of palms nnd forns, while In tho center of the room was a huge pyramid, built entirely of palms. This was arranged In a fountaln-llko effect, the colored electric light display In tho center Bottlng It all off. Small Tunch tables had been placed here and them, each being made into a cosy nook on account of its surrounding foliage. Around theso tables tho visitors and guests sat, eating and drinking and watching tho excellent per formance which the entertainment com mittoe had provided. Tho vaudovlllo was opened by Mr. Abe Mandelbcrg with a monologue, followed by Mrs. Hugo H. Brandels, who roclted "Tho Pair of Boots." Both wero well received and forced to respond to ropeatcd encores. "Dinner at Six," a two-act sketch, was then given. Thoso who participated In this performance were: Henry Rosenthal, Harry L. Cohn, Morton Hlllor, Mrs. A. Simon, Mrs. Henry Hitler, MIsb Rebecca Splesbcrger and Miss Ray B. Cohn. Carroll Johnson, from the Orpheum, was among tho out-of-town guests and the crowd called for him until ho finally consented to help out in the en tertalnmont. FATAL QUARREL 0VER"A BOOK Chicago Man Shoots Lifelong I'rleud In Difference Over Dor rowed Volume, CHICAGO, Nov. 30. A quarrel over a borrowed book was followed by a murder here last night, when George Johnson Bhot and killed Robert Nowltt, a lifelong friend. Mrs. Johnson Is authority for tho state ment that the shooting camo on the heols of the quarrel over the book, which was owned by Johnson. When Nowltt fell to the floor Johnson, wearing neither coat nor hat, rushed from the house. After running two blocks he was seen by a policeman, who gavo chase nnd arrested him. "I've killed a man back there," John son said. Johnson was taken to tho sta tion while other policemen went to his home. Tho prisoner would say nothing as to his tnotlvo for shooting his friend, but the police found In Newltt's pocket a pho tograph of Mrs. Johnson, giving rise to the theory that Jealousy might havo been tho underlying cause of tho quarrel which ended In tho slaying of Nowltt.
