THE OMAHA DAILY BEEl SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 24, 1001. 5 CONDITION OF OMAHA'S TRADE Vtlnmt of Batumi in a Wkdiult VTtj Contlinei Verj Hatlifiotorj. ADVANCE ORDERS LARGER THAN EVER lnn Adrnnced Rhnrplr knit Wrok Doth Pinto and Window Olnm Marked Dorni Home Unri of Cotton Cooda Alio Loner, There were no very startling changes iMt week io far an tho general business Kuatlon In this locality Is concerned. Job ber In nearly all linen reported a very fair trade- in nplte of tho fact that the weather ytia by no means favorable. It begins to look aa though Jobbers would not make ns Big fains In tho volumo of business trans ted during tho month of November over tho corresponding month of last year as they hftvo been uoinit lor soveral months put Taking everything Into consideration, bowever, they say that they will be well Tatlsfled If they can keep even. With uny nlrig llko seasonable weather tho rest of the neason thero soems to bn no reason ytny local houses should not sell more Qoaa than evor before. Hprlng business continues to come In very freely and so far as that part of the trado H ooncerned there are no complaints heard. In nearly every caso wholesalers report the best Una of ndvanco orders that they hava ever had on hand at this time of year. Thero were more fluctuations In market quotations last weok than for somo tlmo past and a number of tho changes were of considerable Importance. Home of them rero advances, whllo others wore reduc tions. In every caso, however, tho changes wero brought about by conditions peculiar to thoso particular lines, instead of by amy wooknnss or strength In tho general tnarkot. The market situation ns n whola has not changed since last report nnd values may still bo said to bo on .a good, firm foundation, with a good, healthy undertone to tho trade. Shnri Advance In Suear. The change In the grocery market which Utractod tho most attention last week was the advanco In sugar by the American Sugar Refining company. Tho prlco was advanced from JI.25 to H.G3. It Is to bo noticed, however, that tho company docs Hot glvo any ussuranco as to tho amount of stocks that will be delivered at thoso B rices and for that reason It Is tho general nprcsslon that the samo rules will govern the trado an were In forco when the prise jyas !4.2o. Tho amount delivered at that time was, of course, far ohort or tho sales wade by local Jobbers and In fact It Is claimed that Omaha jobbers woro obliged to cancel orders for several million pounds. Just what will bo tho noxt change no ono Is In a position to stato and very naturally Jobbers, retailers and consumers nro watch ing for future developments with a great deal of Interest. But while tho American Sugar Refining company la not delivering nnywhero near enough stock to meet tho demand local nouses are all well supplied with sugar Irom outsldo refiners. That sugar, of course, cost about of a cent more, but n case retailers cannot not enough of the 4.6o stock to supply their customers they can buy the higher priced goods for Imme olato wants. In coffeo thero has been no change dur ing tho week worthy of mention. Trices ro fluctuating back and forth through a narrow margin, so that tho markot is In just about tho samo position It was a Week ago. Trade, however, Is rather light, , as buyers aro a little cautious about got tlnu much stock on hand until they know tnore about the crop at Santos. Recent advices Indicate that not as much damago was done tho growing crop by dry weather as was previously ostlmatcd and operators are now awaiting moro definite nows. Quite a etlr was created In tho tea mar ket last week by the announcement that taa China tea crop Is about 6,000,000 pounds lest than that of a year ago. Prices nro of oeurao firming up and considerable ex citement prevails. Quotations ore now about 20 per cent higher than they wero at the opening of tho soason. In dried fruits there has boon no change, M the demand continues light, owing to the lack of cold weather. It Is thought there will bo little improvement In the market until sottled cold weather arrives, when the consumption will undoubtedly Increase and prices advance. In farinaceous goods oatmeal, both bulk and paokago foods, advanced sharply last week. The higher prices were occasioned by the advance in the better 'grades of Sata, which are used In making the meal, leans are also stronger than they wero a week ago. Wisconsin and Michigan Etock has advanced 10c per bushel and 'allfornta markets aro also higher. Tho government haH been making some heavy burchases of luto which has had a ton oenoy to strengthen tho markot, and bo Ides that tho general consumption is usually heavy owing to tho high price of potatoes. There has been no change In canned f'oode so far n prices go, but at tho sumo Ime It Is claimed that spot stocks nro being well cleaned up In packers hands, and aa the consumption Is bound to bo heavy throughout the season, It Is freely pro dlcted that considerably higher prices will rule boforo tho pack of 11)02 arrives on the market. Tho demand for cheeso contlnuos very liberal, whllo the supply of fancy October mado goods Is rather light. As a result ? rices are firming up. Attention is called o the fact, however, that thero Is a good deal of summor mado stock In cold rtorngn. Just how tho market will bo affected when holdors decldo to cut loose Is a matter of conjooture. Hardware Abont Nteiidy. Very little Interest took place last week on tho hardware market. Whllo tho de mand was not what would be called heavy It wae, nevertheless, fully as good as could reasonably be expocted under existing con ditions. The market on practically all staple lines is In tho same position 'it was a week ago. and no Important changes in tho near futuro nro anticipated. There was a big drop In the prlco of window glass last week, which was moro or less In tho nature of a surprise to tho trade In general. The decline amounted J to JO per cent and wont Into effect on rrlday morning. It Is claimed that tho ower prices are tho result of foreign com petition In this country, and nlso to tho fact that the larger jobbers and manu facturers of tho east havo been very light buyers. Plate glass also went down to tho extent of 15 per cent, which was also tho result of foreign competition to some ex tant, at least. Another cause, thought. Is found In the fact that prices have been bo high the last few years that consumption materially decreased, particularly In tho West. Now that prices aro more reasanablo It Is predicted that Plata glass will come Into more general uso In tho west than ver before. Unseed oil eased off about 1 cent last week, but turpentlno and whlto lead remain unchanged. Decline la Some I.lnra of Cotton Goods, House trade with local dry goods Jobbers was rather quiet Inst week, but mall orders Improved and traveling men also picked Up moro Immediate business than they did the week before. According to all reports retailers' stocks are going to ptecos quite rapidly, and as a result It Is thought that trade In a whoiesalo wny will tmprova from this time on. Local houses uru advertis ing large clearing galea for this weok, nnd a good uttendunco of buycrB is anticipated, oprlng orders continue, to como In very freely and last yenr'B record Is broken he dry goods 'market as a wholo Is In )d condition, but a few changes In somo rnn n uvii u ..- viiuuhva ill nvilltl Itnoa Of cotton Roods havo Inlun nlnrn. ror example. Amorlcun shirting prints havo been reduced to S?i cents, mournings und frays to 4 cents and Indlgocs to 4M conts. bat makes u reduction of H cent on ahlrtlngs and ',4 cent on mournings and blues. It Is hardly expected that these reductions will affect similar lines owing to tho fact that other brands were not advanced at tho tlmo Americans wero marked up, Fair Demand for Leather Roods, While the loather goods trado cannot be called particularly active, still thoro Is a good steady, demand which Indicates a healthy condition of trado In the country, Blslng up Orders havo been coming In quite freely of late nnd Jobbers say their sales this month compare favorable, with iho tame month of fust yoar, Traveling men y ii.nu.t, ui, limn' u icw uruers ior rubber goods, ami particularly for such tun na udtlia ujiu lull UUUIS. JU llml IS needed now to make business brisk Is con tinued cold weather. Fruits aud Produce, There was considerable Improvement noted last week In tho demand for fruits ml vegetables. It wus plainly evident that Thanksgiving was not far away from tho Unts that were coming on tho market and j'iiik snippea oui mo most rreoly. All In Olcatloija at the present time point to the best Thanksgiving trade on record. 8o fur as prices are concerned there were not many Important changes last Week. Vegetables In particular held about Heady, ulthough there wob a slightly llrmer In fruits, apples advanced aa the quota tions given below will show. Cranberries Me also considerably higher, extru fancy Hock being quoted aa high aa $150 per barrel. California navel oranges are also on the market and are worth 14 a box. Receipts of fresh eggs are now extremely light and consequently prices nro firmer than they were a week ago. Butter re mains unchanged, but poultry Is a trtflo lower. Thoso who ought to know say they do not look for prices to go much, If any lower, than they are now before Thanks giving, unices receipts should be excep tionally large. Commission men, though, are advising their friends not to ship chick ens, aa they think the demand will be mostly for turkeys. Ducks and geese will sell folrly well, but there Is generally an over supply of chickens at TTiankrglvlng. omaiia wholesale: market. Condition of Trade nnd Quotations on Staple and Fnncr Produce. STRENGTH IN COARSE GRAINS HELPS THEM December Wheat Close Quarter Vv December Cum n Fnll Cent nnd Oat Cent nnd n Half-Pro-Tlalona All Higher. CHICAGO, Nov. 23,-Strength In tho coarse gruins helped all markets today and Decomber wheat closed higher, Decem ber corn lc up and December oats lV4o ad vanced. Provisions closed 2H017t4c higher. Trading In tho corn pit waa tho heaviest In a week, notwithstanding It was Satur day. Continued rains In tho west retarded the crop movement, cables were somewhat Improved and offerings wero light In tho extreme. Added to this several prominent professionals began to bull this cereal. Decomber opened Hfl'io higher at 6040 00-Vc, largely on tho cables. The demand all aro J ml was good both for samples and options. St. Louis, Peoria and Kansas City wtro all buyers of future, and Now Eng land placed orders here, tho llrst for a long time. These bullish Influences forced a good many shorts to cover and December advanced steadily to a strong close, lc higher, at OlUc. Receipts were 116 cars. H heat trading was a dull and narrow uf fttlr. December opened a shade to UQtta higher at 72H072c on hotter cables thun had been expected, but fluctuated between theso two prices until Just before the close. Receipts wero liberal, particularly In tho northwest. Lnto reports stated that tho tains In tho southwest had not brought re lief from tho drouth, but clearances wero light and tho probability of largo world's shipments to be reported Monday steadied tho market Tho corn bulge as much aa anything perhaps brought the slight ad vance. Toward the end of tho session cov ering by shorts brought a slight ndvanco and December tcloscd ilrm, Vic higher, nt 72V072Hc. Local receipts wore 63 cars, one of contract grade. Minneapolis nnd Du luth reported 8S1 cars, making a total for tho three polnta of 937 curs, ngalnst last wcok's 913 and 640 a year ugo. Primary, re ceipts wero 1,018.000 bu., compared with 666,000 bu. last year. Seaboard clearances In wheat and flour equaled 236,000 bu. Bullish uctfvtty developed early In tho oats pit. Tho cash demand was very strong and the speculators could secure nono until prices went up lc. Tho bulgo In corn also helped tho situation, as did nlso tho stiength of outside markets. December oponcd unchanged at 41c und It looked at flrat nu though thero una nothing to be had. Thero was a good deal of In and out trading by commission peoplo and general covering by shorts, which Indicated a mur kot considerably moro oversold than was formerly thought. December quickly ad vanced under theso Influences und with hardly a setback closed strong, l4c higher, at 4254c Receipts wero 219 cars. Provisions wero dull, with an early easier feeling, which, howover, wub dissipated by a fair demand iiy shorts and tho grain bulges. Tho hog run was largo und esti mates Indicated an Increase. January pork closed 17i4c, higher nt $15.45; January lard 2!4c up at $3. SO, and Januury ribs 7V4o higher at J7.S7V4. Speculative acUv Ity was great In today's short session of the Stock exchange nnd manlplatlve dovlccs wero freely used both by tho bulla and tho bears. Tho consequenco was a feverish and excited market. There was a notable ac cumulation of New York Central, Norfolk & Western and Southern Railway stocks, Individual transactions In these running from 1 to 6, 800 shares. New York Central was lifted an extrome 15i, Norfolk & West ern li and Southern Railway preferred lfj. Thero was a disposition to talto profits in some of tho recent favorites which had an unsettling Influence upon the market from the outset. Michigan Central Jumped 20 points on tho purchase of 100 enures. The liufTalo, Rochester & Pittsburg stocks and Minneapolis, SU Puul & Sauit Sto Mario preferred roso 254 to 6?i. Amalgamated Copper was weak throughout, with tho ex ception of a slight fractional gain at the opening. In the lato dealings tho stock slumped to 83, which Is a fraction below the lowest prlco over previously touched. Tho assertion was published In tho street that papers against the Amalgamated company are being prepared In tho attorney general's ofTlco at Washington. The report effected a break of 354 polntn In Sugar as well. This took tho edge oft tho rally on tho strong bank statement and mado the closing Irreg ular. Renewed selling developed at the last In tho transcontinental stocks also. It Is asserted that the break In exchange Is partly duo to renewed selling by bankers In tho process of oxtendlpg foreign loans still maturing which amounts to tho crea tion of u fresh supply of short accounts In exchange, to bo covered ot later maturities. For tho week the supply vao about tho same as It has been for tho past several weeks, but an ln creaso Is noted over tho corresponding week of Inst year. The demand all tho week for good stuff was very liberal and prices aro now fully as good as thoy woro at tho closo of lust week. It Is notice able, howover, that whllo the choicest grades nro selling freely tho common kinds aro neglected, with tho tendency of prices downward. As a result tho range of prices Is greater than It has been In somo tlmo pact. Tho markot for beef steers reached tho high point of the season this week, as high as $7.23 being paid on Friday for a cholco bunch of steers for the Christmas trade. Aside from that one sate, however, tho top of tho weok was $6.60. It Is very ovldent that packers aro nil anxious for cattlo good enough to soil for $6 00 or hotter, and not enough havo been coming to meet tho demand. Prices nro conse quently stronger than they wero a wock ago, as thero wero not enougn or tno goou kinds to go around. Fair to good cattle aro about steady witn last wren, dui me common and warmed-up stuff havo been very slow salo and tiro fully 15Jf25c lower for tho week. A good many cows havo been on tho market ull tho week, and the receipts havo Included quite a few cornfeds. The demand for western grauB beef steers Is hardly as good na It waa a week or ten days ago. Packors claim that the cattle aro not killing out ns woll. but anything at all good may safely be quoted as high us $5.00, with tho commoner kinds selling from $1.25 down.
