0 THE OMAHA DAILY BEE: SUNDAY, KOVEMKEll 24, 1901. 17 HEAD! TO BREAK TRAINING Orldtioi Wtrrion Will 8on Lira Llki Othir XUdtBU. CLOSE OF THE SEASON AND ITS RESULTS Nebraska' Ilccord .Sntlufnclurr to Krlenila of (lie Trnm ninpittp nn to the WeMerrl Clituiipliiiinlilp n Open. With a total of forty-six different plays and tho best team It has ever put on a gridiron tho University of Nebraska will meet tho foot ball champions of tho Has kell Indian school on University Hold at Lincoln next Thursday afternoon. In thrco ways this contest will bo tho greatest the Cornhuakcrs havo played this season. As the culminating ovent of n notable foot ball year, as tho hardest and most Important gaino to bo played In Ne braska and lastly as showing tho team at Its highest degreo of perfection and finish the battlo will bo a meniorublo ono. Eaf.h fcaturo has Its own particular IgnlQcanco In connection with tho event. Tho first makes this gamo tho signal for tho breaking up Immediately afterward. Whon tho last whlstlo blows announcing time at tho end of tho socond half tho University of Nebraska will have no moro foot ball team and tho resulting scenes will be both jolly and sad, Tho sturdy men who havo stood shoulder to shouldur against tho mighty antagonists of tho mlddlo west will band together, their last victory won, nd bear their captain triumphantly from tho field. And tho tin oat of every loyal poctator will lend to tho farowcll chant. Hut In tho dressing room It will bo dif ferent. Tbosa who aro anxiously awaiting tho next season of play will bo cxcttablo nd happy and will "Jolly" around tho placo In exuberant spirits), selecting their lockers for rtext season and planning what position they will try to make on tho team tbon. Not so tho four-year men, whose last mo ments oil a gridiron aro dono. When they pool oil tho old familiar leathern helmets and canvas shin guards and pegged shoes nd ankle braces and padded togs they will choke hack dry sobs as they remember that hereafter tho stout battlo armor will not again bo donned. To a foot call man all tho associations of a collego courso com bined do not equal tho gridiron memories nd no friend of his school layn Is so close to him as tho man who stood straining next him during thoso thousands of times when they mot tho charges of a llorco onemy. Uut training is broken anyway and that la a tomporary Joy nt least. 1'or, despite tho lovo ovcry member of tho squad has for tho sport, tho final breaking of train ing never falls to awaken In him a spirit of real thankfulness that thu thralldom Is at last over. Tho burdonlng senso of con stant supervision Is productive of Its own reaction toward tho end and tho sudden roleaso of tho grip of coaches nud trainers Is always moro or Icbb of an antldoto for tho pain of abandoning tho game. the second team being sometimes twenty strong. Hut as a result of. It all no one Is laid up for repairs and the team will go Into tho game Thursday In better condition than It has known before. All this week work will bo very light. Thcro will be scrim mages Monday, but Tuesday only signal practice will be held and on Wednesday the boys will not even don their suits. A brief lineup In signals for the now plays will bo all for that day. Thus all tho players will be finely tapered off for the contest. In team work aa well as condition the Ncbrafkans expect to make tho finest show ing of the year. They now have more plays at their command than any team In the west eavo Yost's Wolverines at Michigan, who play clxty-scvcn different runs and bucks with a variation of thirteen forma tions. Howovcr, the Cornhuskora have plenty and Quarterback Drain Is determined to run them all through till he finds a set that the Indians cannot master. Indications aro that tho Thanksgiving gamo will bo tremendously attended. It will bo tho Initiation of tho now field In all Its completeness of equipment. Thero Is now finished a grandstand that will ac commodnto l.COO persons and besides that thero are bleacher scats for 2,000 more. Then a great deal of sldo lino spaco still remains. Manager Com gill has billed all Nebraska and portions of neighboring states for tho game and Intends to make tho affair mcro than a duplicate of tho Minnesota-Nebraska contest of last year. An attendanco of fully C,000 Is antici pated, Meanwhllo tho Indians are, of course, working harder In preparation for this gamo than any other of their schedule They have beaten Missouri and Kansas and to defeat Nebraska would bo a culmination or a senson of foot ball that could not bo excelled. Tho two teams will opposo each other aa follows: IiI3... liT... HASKRLTi. Kcllx Oliver and Tomahawk I.O Dubola C Curl ItO Hedwater It T Batnguyon H K Archtnuctte and Uuvon Q n Bi'nt and Arcniqueite L II II Hasa H II B..Fallls, Oliver Kli Miguel That this will bo tho hardest gamo to bo played In Nobraska caunot bo doubted. It will bo tho greatest contest of tho soason for tho Cornhuskers, outside of thoso with the Hadgors and tho Gophers. That the Indians excell all the rest Is plain from their scores. Tho fact that thoy dofeatcd both Missouri and Kansas, as did Nebraskn, makes them tho logical oppononta of the latter team. That tho Haskell men will win, how ever, no Nobraskan for a moment thinks. Tho Cornhuskcr toam Itself Is dotormlncd to beat tho red raou by a larger scoro than did Minnesota, and that was 28 to 0. That this can bo dono Is a matter of somo doubt. The Indians aro undoubtedly strong aud they weigh pound for pound with tho No braska men. Truo, thoy nllawcd Missouri to makb a formldablo stand against them nd woro not ablo to secure a touchdown against tho Tigers in tho first half of tho , gamo. Uut beforo drawing a comparison batwoen this lino of play and the mannor In which the Nebraskans annihilated tho MlsuourlanB In Omaha on November 9 It must bo remembered that tho Tlgera havo Improved wonderfully alnco than. So their ability to hold tho red men to tlvo points In tho first half and nineteen for tho wholo gamo does not mean that tho Indians aro weak. Tho Nebraska team Is Just now at its zenith. At no tlmo during tho entire sea son has tho eleven boon In Us present con dition and form. Tho Improvement litis been steady from tho first. Mnny enthusiasts ro confident that tho Cornhusknrs could do feat Wisconsin now, and Coach Ilooth says frankly that Minnesota would not bo ablo to conquer his team at this time. This system of constant betterment is good ono, but unfortunato In cases whero tho hard games como iilorg early ou tho schedule. Coach Yost, tho Michigan grid iron Instructor, makas u&o of a system which produces exactly tco opposite re sult. Ills teams always plungo ahead at first and mako big reputations early In tho sea son. Then they fall away towards tho end. Praetlco hrm been very sovcro at Lincoln tho last week. With no gamo schoduled for yejterday, for which to savo strength, Coach Hooth felt at llborty to put tho men through florco grist of work. Now plays wero brought out In profusion and every scrub that could bo got out In n suit was lined up against tho first team now and then, NEBRASKA. Cortolvou It 1: Wostovcr (C.) It T Brow it a Koehler C Moloney 1,(1 Kingsbury it'C Htrlngcr, Bhcdd...L.E Drain Q B Crandall It II II Cuff Ij 11 11 l'lllflbury F B For tho first tlmo In tho history of foot ball at tho University of Nebraska tho scrubs have been recognized as a factor de serving official commendation and rowarda of merit from tho athlotlo board. Action was last weok taken as a result of which tho men on this vecond cloven will rocolvo red sweaters and caps at tho close of the season and will also be given a grand ban quet and blowout genorally on the day that training Is broken. This Is a timely rec ognition of the service of theso plucky men who have mado Nebraska's first team what It is. Wolverines has been relentless and unfor giving and a Wisconsin gamo on their schedule would be as out of place as a straw hat In January. In the east the season breaks a little early. Among tho big teams there Is but ono game left for Thanksgiving day, that between Cornell and Pennsylvania. The fierce way In which tho "I yell" boys anni hilated Columbia recently will Indicate, that tho Quakers wilt bo shown no mercy at their hands. Meanwhllo Princeton finished up a w:ek ago with Its defeat at the hands of Yale und Harvard and Yale broke train ing after their contest of yestorday. In tbo west It Is different. Almost every team, largo and small, has a game for Thanksgiving day. Most Important are the thrco In Illinois. On the morning of tho holiday Michigan will play Iowa In Chi cago. In the afternoon Wisconsin will meet Chicago on tho same field. Meanwhile over at Champaign tho stalwart llttlo men from tho University of Illinois will struggle with tho giant Oophers. Meanwhllo at Lafayette I'urduo and Northwestern will vie for honors, whllo Knox and Belolt meet at Oalcsburg. Notro Damo plays the South Bend Athletic club at South Bund, Ind., and tho University of Indiana faces tho Depauw team at Bloom Ington. Coming further west, Kansas and Mis souri moet In what will bo a closo con test at Kansas City, whllo their bettors, tho Haskell Indians and tho Cornhuskers, battle- at Lincoln. Drake and Clrlnncll bat tlo for tho assistant championship of Iowa at Des Moines and Crelghton university of Omaha will entertain tho Lincoln Medics on Crelghton field. Tho aggravating condition which leaves tho championship undecided at tho close of a bitterly contested season of foot ball schedulesobtatns In tho wost thle year In stead of tho cast. Thoso who listened with hopeless despair to tho various claims of Iowa and Minnesota to tho middle west supremacy in tho fall of 1900 had strenu ously hoped that thoy would not again bo compelled to undergo such a tlrado of vauntlngs, mado especially dlsagrecablo by tho fact that In most everyone's opinion Wisconsin was hotter than either, nftor all, dcspl(o "tho fact that tho Badgers wero de feated at Minneapolis by 6 to 5. But not all the wishes of a multitude of people In the wcat who arc interested in college athletics served to swervo tho re vengeful Wolvorlnes from their sworn course, and their vow nover to play an othor game with Wisconsin remains still unbroken. So once moro tho western cham pionship Is on a hook with both grabbing for it, and tho only difference Is that this tlmo both teams havo something to back tholr claims, while last season Iowa had no moro real right to demand recognition as a pennant winner than did scvoral other minor teams who played snap schedules and met with no defeats for that reason. There Is really nothing Just now which glvea to either tho BadgcrB or tbo Wolver ines any advantago In this contest of mer its. Tho two havo played long schedules, nnd fairly hard ones, but the games have bocn largely among dltferent foot ball sets. Their only duplicate games tho entlro sea son through aro with Belolt and Chicago. For tho rest Michigan went caet to Ohio, Indiana and Buffalo universities and the Carllslo Indians, while Wisconsin turned west to meet Nobraska, Kansas, Minnesota, Ames, Upper Iowa aud Knox. Of the two tho Wlsroneln schedule Is doubtless tho' heaviest, out still that affords no basis tor claims of superiority. "A dozen on tho shell," somo celery and a pint of Cook's Imporlal Ilxtra Dry Cham pagno Is a lunch for tbo gods. WEEK WITH BUSY BOWLERS O matin Still I. end the I.dtKiir Ilotli In fJntucn nmt In lmllrliliinl AvcritKC. In the race for tho local pennant the Omaha Bowling club still rctnlns Its lead. Meanwhile the Gate City quintet has by a good spurt leaped Into second place, leav ing the St. Charles and Clarkson teams n tie, but now for third placo Instead of second. Tho only other chango Is that the Germans and Krug Parks havo changed plnces, tho former stopping up a notch. The Omabns havo not only maintained tholr lead, but havo increased it somowhat, shoving tholr percentage up several more figures. This team has also played tho best gamo of tho week, only ono of Its meD carrying a star on Individual average. Close behind it comes tho Gate City aggre gation, with two stars. Tho men of tho latter team, too, are higher In the per centage column than nny other set of nve. All the Gato City players nro above twenty-fifth place. In this system of ranking tho Omahas are second, with all men abovo twenty-eighth placo. Then In closo sequenco como the Germans, Clarksons, St. Charles, Wcstorns, Krug Parks and Nationals, This latter toam Is Improving, carrying only two stars this week, and for the first tlmo In three weeks Its llvo men do not end up tho col umn in a row. Ono Krug Park player, K. H. Krug, has broken Into the lower ranks. Tho Krug Park team shows tho most serious falling off In play of any. It car ries a star for every man this week and has not a player abovo eighteenth place. Closo on Its heels come tho St. Charles men, who also havo stars all around. Iiowevor, ono of them heads tho percentage column still. Individual work on tho wholo Is retrograding Just now, twenty-four out of forty players having failed to maintain their gaits of a week ago. Club Stnnillntr. There are Just two points, however, on which a decision botween the two may still hinge. Koch plays Belolt and Chicago. Should clthor win both games by larger scores decisively than ,dld the other It would be fair to call that team the bettor of tho two. Wisconsin defeated Belolt 40 to 0 on October G. Tho Wolverines yes terday tried tholr best to beat that score, with tho result known. Again, Mich igan beat Chicago only 22 to 0. Tho Badg ers will play hardor on Thanksgiving day In tho Windy City than thoy did against Minnesota In their attempt to doublo that score. There will bo no lying down in tho second half of that game. Should they suc ceed they will bo undisputed western cham pions In all save tbo most technical sense. Thursday will tell. Tho real way, howovcr, would bo for these two teams to play a post-season game. But ever slnco Wisconsin took away tho annual Thanksgiving gamo with Chicago from Michigan two years ago the hatred of tbo Omaha Gato City.... St. Charles.. Clarkson .... R0URKE TELLS WHERE THEY MAY FAIL Ciilln .Allrntlon In the Cnntrnct Under Whlrh I lie LrnKUr Vt Funned nnd I lip DllllPiilt) of llrenk Iiir the Circuit. It's a busy time for tbo minor league builders Just now, and ho is a mighty un popular or unsuccessful magnato who is not considering sovcral propositions for the coming season. Omaha's popularity Is welt attested by tho fact that It Is now consid ered In each of half a dozen plana to form circuits. Ono outfit is so determined to havo Omaha In that tbo announcement hao been mado that wo will havo two teams hero next season It any othor tries to break In. Oh, Joyl Como on boys I Twenty can play as well as one. How nlco It would be If wo could Just locato a circle of ball parks around tho city along tho routo of Park Commissioner Cornish's boulevard and drive from park to park. Talk about your vaudo vllle, why the continuous performance won't bo a circumstance to Omaha as n base ball center when the hot air league builders get through. Mr. President Hlckoy told Mr. Magnate Itourko down at Kansas City that Omaha Is to be given the Chicago berth In the now Hlckcy league. Just how much attention Papa BUI savo to tho siren song of tho president hasn't as yet been told. Whon Hourko loft Omaha for his southern trip ho wasn't at alt taken with tho Hlckcy no tion; In fact, ho talked mighty strong against It. Said he: "I take very little stock In tho now leaguo and I am going to oppose as far as I can any effort to dis rupt tho present circuit. Tho Wcntorn loaguo has control in Kansas City, St. Paul and Minneapolis, and we do not proposo to give them up to any new association with out a fight. Our present circuit was formed under a live-year agreement. Let mo read you what our constitution says on tho toplo of membership: 'Section 3. This league shall consist of olght clubs, located In tho fol lowing cities, to-wlt: Colorado Springs, Denver, Omaha, St. Joeoph, Dcs Moines, Kansas City, Minneapolis and St. Paul, for a period of five years ending tho second Tuesday of January, 1906. or such other clubs as may bo hereinafter provided for, but In jio ovent shall thero be more than ono club In any city.' Now, I contend that that section Is as binding a contract as can bo made. Moreover, It can not be sus pended or abrogated. Hero Is a further section from tho constitution: 'The consti tution of this leaguo may bo altorcd or amended by a throo-fourths vote of the leaguo at any annual meeting, or by a unanimous voto at any other tlmo; pro vided, however, that this section and sec tions 3, 8 and 48 shall not bo altered or amended except by a unanimous vote of this league.' "Now, Just how Mr. Hlckoy expects to get around this provision I can't see. If tho members of tho prosent ' leaguo want to continue tho circuit as It stands there la no way by which It can bo broken up. As near aa I can find out, tho Hlckoy Idea Is to oust Beall at Minneapolis. He'll have a nlco tlmo doing that. I don't know Just whon or whero tho league meeting will he hold, but expect it will be early in De cember, and here In Omaha. Ono thing's a cinch, though. There'll be somo flro works at that session." One of tho latest Btorles to fluttor la on tho breezes from tho land of tho midnight sun Is to the effect that Magnate Leunon of St. Paul has been added to tho circuit commltteo by Hlckey, tho aforesaid com mlttco now consisting of Messrs. Hlckoy, Tcbeau and LenDon. Bo nice, you know. All you havo to do Is to satisfy these gen tlemen and you got your franchise. But thero Is another sldo to this picture, If a llttlo story that Is being told has any truth In It. Out In Denver recently George Te beau made ono of tho very few mistakes which havo marked his baso ball career. Ho told a reporter that Jimmy Manning couldn't do anything to him in Kansas City; that ho had tho town solid and ex pected to stay thcro forovor. Tcbeau may bo rlchtl but thero aro somo pretty well- informed baso ball men up this way who aro willing to bet that Manning can make Whlto Wings Jump In tho Kaw river, baso- balllcally speaking, Insldo of six weeks or quicker. Tebeau has his Denver francntse In Packard's name and It will only tako a mtnuto to make tho transfer. He was a winner In Denver, a loser In Kansas City. Ho Is belloyod to Do willing to go back to Denver If ho can sell his Kansas City franchise. And rumor has It that Lennon has been given a chanco to buy Kansas City. This may be tho secret of tho circuit committee. Another good thing Is tho proposal for a sort of Slamose-twln league, six cluba on one circuit and six on anothor, with Hlckoy for president. This great Colossus of the base ball world Is as full of schemes as the general dog Is of fleas, and tho bet ting Is a llttlo better than oven that It ho keeps on be will Qnd himself entirely outsldo of the game. Out of the darkness one tact alono shines, Omaha is certain to have a team in ono of the leagues next summer. No ono who Is In tho least conservative la undertaking to form any definite conclusions as to what the circuit will bo, although President Hourko says ho feels confident It will be the samo as last year. It may bo that Denver and Colorado Springs will be displaced by Indianapolis and Milwaukee. In fuct thero are so many changes that might bo mado that It Is u waste of tlmo to talk about them until tho big leagues havo settled down as to what tbuy are going to do. After tho American haa made up Its circuit will bo plenty of tlmo for tho Western to figure. Nothing of any moment has developed In the big league war. Both sides havo held "gum shoe" meetings, and each has glvon out some mysterious whisperings as to what Is doing, but neither (tecum in clined to take the public very far Into their confidence. Tho transfer of owner ship of tho Washington and Detroit teams of the American are (ho only actually known facts. The trauBfor of Mllwaukco to St. Louts has, according to President John son, been fully decided upou and the trans fer of Baltimore to Now York Is looked upon as reasonably certain. And that's all. In the meantime our own Colonel Buck erlno Keith Is like tho war horse who scented the battle afar off und who sayeth "ha, hal" unions the captains. He is going about with his head up and his nostrils dilated, eager to get Into tho fight from almost any point. Ilut'k would glvo tho price of three scats In tho bleachers If ho could only bo at tho Western leugito meet ing with a vote. Ills well known friendship for tho leaguo president is so stroug that he Is almost willing to buy a team Just for the plcasuro of being allowed to cast a voto of cuntldcni'o In tho probity aud managerial ability of Mr. Hlckoy with a copper.
