THE OMAHA DAILY BEE: SUNDAY. OCTOBER 27, 1001. CONDITION OF OMAHA'S TRADE Warm Wiathsr Eetarding the IfoTtmtnt of Fall aid Wiiter Go.ds. MARKETS FOR WEK RATHER FEATURELESS admncc Order for Mitring; Shipment Coming In More I'rerly Tlmn Ever Before TliU Enrly In (ho SJcnson. urns nuleter than last week and upward endoncy nf prices checked: worsted ynrns idvnnclng: woolens tmletly steady. Tlie ImportH of dry goods and merchandise at tno port or now yorit ior mis woen arc amen hi 411, w, mi. Omaha Jobbers are feeling the effects of lie long warm weather to iiulto an uppro liable extent. Retailers In the country are. it course, selling very llttlo cold weather roods at tho present time and its n. result their stocks are quite complete. l or that reason they are nut sending in as many slalng-up and duplicate orders as they would If tho weather wero more seasonable. Thero Is. however, very little complaint from any source, as both Jobbers and re tailors aro confident that tho present lull Is only temporary atid that when thu fall de mand docs set In It will bo of liberal pro imrtinn nnii more than oITset liny dullness that may bo experienced ut tho present time. . . .... Advance business Is very satisfactory. Traveling men are now on tho road with their lines of spring samples and so far havo met with better success than over be fore this early In tho season. They find merchants In good spirits and confident re garding future business, so that they havo little difficulty In landing liberal orders. Tho markets havo been rather unuvcntful f luring the week, as most lines arc selling n about the same notches they were a week ago. The few changes that havo taken place nave tn most cases licen in the direction of higher values, showing that the general market Is In a good, healthy condition. As tho demand In prac tically all lines Is ftiltv ennui to the ca pacity of manufacturers, tho 'general Im pression Is that present prices will bo maintained for somo tlmo to tome. Since last report thero has been no change In the sugar market, both raws and rellned remaining the same. So far as this market is concerned thero Is nothing of Interest to te said regarding tho war between Mm brel'sugnr men anil the trust. It Is under stood that very little of the cheap sugar Is being shipped Into the lower river mnrkJta and In fact not enough to affect tho mar ket one way or the other. Ho far there has been no cut prlco sugar marketed In this territory and local Jobbers do not anticipate. uny ucmorunzuiioii oi prtccs in mis sec tion. Coffee Mnrket lllKhcr. Cnffen tnnk nn onward turn this last week, prices on both green and roasted being a cent a pound higher than they wero a week ago. As n result of tho higher price tho market Is a little moro no tlvn ihnn It Iiiim lien for somo tlmo wist. The only change In farinaceous goods of any Importance Is tho slightly easier feel ing In rice. Tho new crop Is now on the market and stocks nro mom plentiful tlnn they havo been In somo time. Heans und nractlcnllv all other lines of farinaceous goods ore quoted tho sama us they were a weoicngo. Canned tomatoes nro still firming- tin and reports from lialtlmoro state that there nro not moro than 10,000 cases of standard tomatoes In first hands. Owing to tho light Iiack and to tho fnvornblo outlook lor ilghcr prices In the futuro speculators lavo bought up everything available, which accounts for so llttlo stock being left In first hands. As previously mentioned job bers nro nrcdlctlntT higher nrlccs in tho future and particularly after tho first of the year. Other lines of canned goods uro also In a good, strong position and tho gen eral market may be quoted firm and active. Thero has been no change in tho cheese mar ket i slnco last report, although prices may bo quoted strong. The heavy pur chases havo now been mostly made, so that thero Is not as much Interest In tho market uh there was a short tlmo ugo. As regards tho condition of trade local Jobbers report an active demand, with tho prospects ior mo luiuro very encouraging Unseasonable Wentlicr Injure Trade Dry soods jobbers nro perhaps mora do pendent unon weather conditions than wholesalers in most other llneH. Whenever the weather Is unseasonable their trade falls off materially and as a result their Business at tno present time la or ratner limited proportions. It Is claimed by travel ing men that retailers out through the country1 havo sold comparatively little of their fall and winter lines and consequently there Is very little opportunity for them to sell any goods of that character. Condi tions In tho country, however, may be said to be very satisfactory, us tho consumer has plenty of money and all that Is needed to mako an active trade Is a wave of cold weather. Tho fact that merchants are not discouraged Is well shown by tho way In which they aro placing advanco orders for spring. A good many merchants who huvo held back in previous years are now placing lioerai orders, wnicn wouui indicate moro than the usual amount of confidence In the future. Tho cotton goods market Is still In n very .strong position und u number of lines o print cloths and goods of that charade have bscn marked up from He to 4c The OMAHA. "WliOLEAI.K MAJtKCT. So CliaiiKe In Ilurilivnre, Thero Is very llttlo to bo said this week regarding tho situation In hardware. Prices all along tho line aro nractlvally the same as they wore a week ago. Tho demand Is us aciivo as couiu uo expecieu unuer pres ent conditions, but of course strictly cold weather goods are not moving out as tapldlv as they might. On tho other hand, uch lines us barb wlro aro selling more freely than ever before, owlnir to tho fact that the continued warm weather allows in unusual amount of outdoor work to bo lone. lcal houses are woll supplied with practically all kinds of goods with the exception of steel ranges, which uru coming forward ratner siowiy. Aiauuracturers tlalm that their capacity Is equal to the lamand, but that they are unablo to get Iteel. Thero Is not what might bo called a ihortago at the present time, as so fur lobbers havo been able to fill their orders promptly. A rather unusual occuranco took place last week, Inasmuch as white lend eased off Vic The decline was not anticipated and consequently wns somewhat of u surprise. This mnrkot Is still almost bare, so far as linseed oil Is concerned, and Just hovLsoon there will be a liberal supply on haiW can not bo told. Prices on raw range from 0c to 62o and boiled from tS2c to 61c, but very few houses nro quoting prices at all. Iioth window and pinto glass are quoted tho same us they, wero a week ago. Tho window glass factories will begin operations Novembor 1, but It Is not expected that any chango In prices will toko place at that tlmo. Those who ought to know suy there will probably bo no change at least before tho first of tho year and perhaps not then. In caso any change should take place t that tlmo It would probably be only on tha smaller sizes. Fair Dcmund for Leather (Souils. For the week there has been a good, liberal run, an Increase being noted both ovr last week and also over tho same weok nisi year, as the table or receipts at the head of the column will show. The market on fat sheep nnd lambs held up In good shape until the last of the week, when reports from other marketa of tho downward tendency of prices mndo buyers rather bearish nt this point. Thoy, however, failed to break prices here, as feeder buyers all wero anxious Ior supplies und outbid tho pnekers and got the bulk of the offerings nt steady prices. As u tesult this has been about the high est market in tho country. Had It not been for this heavy demand utl thn part of feedets the market would probably have ciued off about a dime, particularly on sheep. Tho top prlco for the week ou lambs was $I.SS, which was paid for u deck of natives of choice quality.
