WEEK'S MARKET IS LIGHT AH Eusinesi Poulbl Fat Off Out of Baiptct for Freiidint. SETTLEMENT OF STRIKE HELPS TRADE II I U .llovement of .Moiirnlim Goods Merenntlle Pniiuents Continue Prompt Corn llecrlies Mel. Imck from I'.nrly Frost, NEW YORK, Sept. 20.-R. G. Dun & Cos Weekly Ruvlew of Trade tomorrow will say: Universal sorrow placed n eulmli.g hand on tho rush and turmoil of tho market place. Everything that could bu conveni ently postponed was put usldc out of vi spoct for tho man whose life wus devoted to developing tho wonderful activity In all branches of trade nnd Industry. Exchange suspended operation for two days and tho distribution of merchandls was In many cases limited to Immediate requirement!, Mercantile navments contlntlo prompt, but It wiih to bo expected that bank exchaligi would not show tho customary heavy ga.iis over previous years. At leading cltlcB out side of New York there was a gain of 0.8 per cent over looo nnd a loss of 7 per cent from 18'). Yet prices were strong and theru were many Indications of great latent power that may be expecteu to np Pear as normal conditions return. After two months of controversy nt tho steel mills, a settlement has been reach mI, although tho terms are not entirely satis factory to tho Amalgamated association, ami there is much complaint mining tho men regarding the conduct of the strike. Mnnnccrs arc confident that the outcome meuns no further Interruption to work for a long period and there Is hopo of making up ror mucn or tne ilclay by operating over time. In preparlnc for an exceptionally nctlve year In 19u2. some of the largest mills are to double their cnpaclty. Flctlt 011:. prices dlsutinenr with tho nrosnoct of full production, but It will be some tlmo before immeiiinto iicuvcries are mane at 111 figures. Meanwhile tho pic Iron market revives nt the assurance of heavy consump tion nmi southern furnaces am already ask Ing higher quotations, Forwardlngs of fall footwear to the we nnd south have about ceased With the ad vanclng season, but producers are still busily nngagrd turning nut goods for Job hers at enstcrn cities. Quotations for shoes an unchanced. thoiich there Is a uenernl advance of 214fi5c on boots. Abundance of work In prospect has made operators more anxious to secure mnterlnl and tho leather market averages about half a cent higher. In dry goods the feature of the week was tho iihenoimnal movement of moiirnlnir gonos. wiiien nilvnneeil In nr ee as llm available supply whs reduced. Mills having siocKs 111 crepu ami bunting wero able to dispose of everything on hand nnd largo shipments went wcM. Of standard staples mo supply in nrst Hands is light and sup plcmentary orders arrive freely. Export buying of brown goods Is not heavy and domestic orders only fair, but prices are llrm and holdcrH offer no concessions. Print cloths are steady at tho recent advnnce to 3c nnd a strong undertone throughout nil lines of cottons promises well for the fu ture, Some strength was given tho raw material by fears of frost and reports of heavy rains. Woolen goods remain firm, but quiet, whllo the wool market Is hard ened by advances nt the London auction sale. Corn has met with another setback. After passing through the vicissitudes of heat and drouth, which curtailed tho crop severely. notwithstanding a largo acreage, It was subjected to the other extreme of tempera ture. How much Injury was done by frost cannot yet be iletermlnecl, but It forced prices to nn extremely high price Tuetdny It was not poxsihlo to retain all the nd vnnce nnd there was evidence of much manipulation during the movement. Upeenlu tors Aiciiln t'onnliler Outlook of the loiie Market. NEW YORK! Sept. 20.-The principal In cident In today's stock market wns the re cuirenco of the consideration of tho specu lators to the money market outlook. The unexpectedly henvy movement of cur rency to the Interior for the week by ex press, an reported bv tho banks, wns the Immediate cause of this development. Tho early advance In the stock mnrket wns cheeked when tho puhlle estimates made their appearance nnd prices sold off, prac tically wiping out the earlier gains. Tho estimates do not include todnv's operations and as yesterday was a holiday and prac tically no business wan done on Saturday, tho showing Is for only four davs. Yet the shipments of money to the Interior by the banks were the heaviest of any week in the season, reaching $5,380,256. compared with $.1,737,818 last week. Allowing for the receipts the net loss by the banks on the express movement was nearly $3,uoo,ooo. Tills Is a considerable offset to the gain on subtreasury operations, which reached up to last night $11,817,000. As tho extraor. dlnnry mensures of the treasury for the re lief of tho money market have about ex hausted their force the effect next week of the heavy Interior demand becomes some what illsquletlMR. There were not very many corn-fed steers offered today, but the quality of some of them wns exceptionally good, as is shown by the fact that as high as 16.00 wns paid. Packers nil seemed to wunt the better grades and consequently strong prices were paid. The commoner grades wero naturally not as ready sellers, but still they brought fully as good prices as wero paid on wcnnesiiay. The supply of cow stuff continued liberal today, aliout 45 cars being offered. There was not much chunue In tho nrlces n.ild the market being very close to steady. Soma salesmen thought they had to take a shade lower prices, but still tho better grades sold in aiioui Wednesday , notclics Dulls, calves nnd stags also sold about stonily, wnore tne quality was at nil nood Stockers and feeders of good to choice quality were easily disposed of today at steady prices, but the commoner kinds wero very slow sale and If anything n shade lower, Uuyers did not want very many to day, ns this Is too near the closo of the week Western range steers of good quality were bought up by packers In good season at strong prices. Jow stuff brought about steady prices, as compared with Wcdncs day, and stockers and feeders held steady where the quality was deslrublo. Repre- senuiuvu buius; RE Eli STEERS.
