nt public expense. "I was almost com
pelled to sign the resolution,'1 said tho
mayor. "The streets cannot bo allowed to
remain In their present condition. I am uot
willing to havo any money spent on Six
teenth street. With great crowds of
strangers coming to tho city we cannot
afford to leave tjo streets In their present
condition. It would bo impossible for the
parades to move along soino of the streets."
