Shipments of tea from China and Japan to the port of Omaha were larger In August than for any like period in the history of the trade. The largest part ot the tea was taken by Itcal jobbers, but a considerable amount was ordered here by Jobbers for Chicago and New York, who haTe dis tributed it from this polnL At the present time there Is considerable agitation among importers of tea regarding the prsent amy on that commodity. It U probable that the coming sesion of con gress will be requeste-d to repeal the law levying the duly, on the ground that It Is not only bringing unnecessary revenue Into the United States treasury, but that It Is resulting In the Importation of an Inferior grade ot tea. A few days ago a New York trade paper secured 'ntervlews from the leading Im porters, the majority of whom favored the abolition of the tariff. Those In favor of the rep'.al of th law pointed out that with the enactment of the law- the im porters were forced to buy cheaper grades, as the consumer In America would pay no higher price than formerly. Many also claimed that the law resulted In a larger Increase ln tho consumption of coffee, which U on the free list. According to local jobbers this claim Is not borne out by the facts, as the Importations at this point are heavier than ever before.
