Mder Creek Mining company has let a con-
racl for a sixty-ton cyanide plant to bo
erected In the Yellow Creek mining ills-
rlct, tno miles south of this city. The
company is a California corporation, halnn
operated a number of properties before.
The main ofllce Is nt Des Moines, la. A
few weeks ago the company purchased the
Ittlo Blue Fraction group of claims, nbotit
forty acres of ground, In which Is to bo
found a largo amount of cy.mldlng ore. The
round adjoins that of tho Wasp No. 2
company, which is nutptittlng about fifty
ons of quartzlto ore per day. James, Hart-
Bering of Deadwood has received tho con-
ract for building the plant.
An electric light plant Is tietug Installed
t the 250-ton cynnlde plant of Hie Spenr-
fish Mining company nt Ragged Top. A
night shift will be put on Immediately and
tho mill will then be operated at full enpa-
Ity. The last cleanup from the mill for a
fourteen-day run, on 123 tons of ore per
day, amounted to about $10,000. The ore
ntoly has been getting richer In gold.
There will scon be In commission another
cyanide plant ns large as the Spenrllsh
company's, which Is being put up as rnpjdly
as possible by the Deadwood Standard .Min
ing company. In which Colorado capital Is
figuring.
Twenty additional stamps have been or
dered by tho Clover laf Mining company,
which are to be Installed at the sixty-
stamp mill located at the Uncle Sam mine,
on Elk creek, twelve miles south of this
Uy. The nlr compressor nnd other ma
htnery have been delayed In arriving, ow-
ng to the steel strike. A new steel hoist
ing plant hni been built, capable of sink
ing 2,000 feet. It Is expected very soon that
the sixty stamps will be dropping an oro
and the mine will then boconie one of tho
strongest outptitters in the Illack Hills
It Is estimated that tho mine now has throe
ears' ore In sight for sixty stamps per
lay. Tho mine h.is only been partly ex
ploited.

Work Is soon to bo resumed again at the
copper ground owned by the British-American
Gold nnd Copper company, flvo miles
west of Hochford, In Pennington county
At tho annual meeting of the company at
Detroit last week It was decided to Issue
$100,000 worth of bonds, which will net tho
company about $75,000. This amount will
sink deep shafts on the big copper ore crop
pings on this Rochfard property and it Is
moro than likely that n copper and gold
mine will bo opened up, as has been the
case on the property adjoining on tho south,
now being exploited by the Black Hills Cop
per' company. Tho "British-American com
pany owns over 800 acres of ground In tho
Black Hills, thero being a good gold prop
erty east of this city In the Butcher gulch
country.
One of tho best ledges of oro In the
southern Hills has been opened up In tho
North Star mine, located nlno miles north
west of Custer. It Is owned by Omaha
capitalists and Is being thoroughly devel
oped by them. At n dopth of 200 feet tho
ledge Is twenty feet wide and It Is stated
that the last sampling of the ore gave an
averago value of $41 per ton gold. Cross-
cutting Is in progrers now toward another
big ledge of ore, which Is located by Its
outcropping. Three other ledges of ore
have bcon found, ruunlng parallel with tho
big ledge. Tho company will thoroughly
exploit the ground to a depth of COO feet
before Installing nny kind of a reduction
plant.

The Bear Gulch Mining company, composed
ot capitalists residing at Aurora, III., Is
working two separate forces of men on the
large tract ot mining ground In tho Bear
Gulch district. A shaft Is being sunk at
one place to strike lower quartzlte and
crosscutttng will then bo done cast and
west. In this Bear Gulch district, a very
rich dUcovcry of ore has been made by P.
A. Gushursl and associates of Lead. The
ore Is said to be a sylvanlto nnd arrange'

creased capacity. The plant has been
worked several times on ores from tha
different parts of the Hills. Thrco nddl
lonal converters have Just been put In,
making a total rapacity ot 150 tons ot ora
per day. A chargo of $0 per ton will ho
made for treatment on all ores, which will
make It possible to treat the refractory
ores of tho northern Hills. Tho process
used at this plant is entirely new to tho
Black Hills. It was Invented by F. H.
ong of Chicago, who owns tho right for
tho states of Colorado and South Dakota.
When this plant Is started up it will bo
tho means of creating a demand for ora
around Mystic nnd Rochford. There irt
partly developed mines there that will b
opened as soon as a place for ore treat
ment can be found.

Mrs. Peter Monforo of Mankato, Minn.,
who Is visiting relatives In the city whlla
enroute to Springfield, S. D., of which placa
she was a pioneer, although 71 years of age,
distinguished herself Saturday while on tha
street with two children, viewing a circus
parade. A runaway horso dashed down
the street. Blio' was Just starting across
the street, leading the children by tha
hands, when the runaway dashed straight
for her. She flung the children behind hep
out of harm's way, but was herself knocked
down and badly shaken up by colliding with,
tho hub of the buggy drawn by tho run
away. BeyomJ being tadly bruised her In
juries wcro not serious. Her prompt action
saved at least ono of tho children from
being Instantly killed.

natta, city civil engineer, descended into
a sewer this afternoon to assist a work
man named Reeves, who had been overcome
by the gas. Vannatta was also overcome
and no one dared to descend. The bodies '
of tho two men were taken out with great
difficulty by the assistance of hooks. Van
