market ascended to "l'ic. The fact that
only eight loads were taken for foreign

ish Impetus early which carried September
to the best price ot the day without ma

were as usual not calculated to check ine
advance. The wheat weakness and the de

NEW YORK. Aug. 8 -Unusual prom
inence was given to the trading In the
United States Steel stocks owing to the fre
quency with which large blocks changed
hnnds nt a rising scale. Professional oper
ators were Inclined to cover shorts In theso
Issues owing to the resumption of work at
some plants and the nlllclal announcement
of tho absorption of the Shelby Tube works.
When the prices of the steel stocks began
to mount upward and reached a level of
24 and 2 per cent respectively above yester
day for the common and preferred, the gen
eral mnrket kept pace with the movement
nnd exceeded those gains In some Instances.
There were many Interruptions to tho gen
eral rise during the day by protlt-taklng and
short selling by the room operators, but the
tecesslons wero not noteworthy except for
the United States Steel stocks, which ended
about 1 point below the best, when n report
circulated that a prominent operator was
unloading stock purchased at n much lower
level, This selling soon affected the other
market, but stagnation soon resulted and
the closing dealings showed steadiness.
Conspicuous strength was displayed by St.
Paul. Union Paclllc. Missouri Pnclllc. Sugnr
nnd Iyaekawannn, which were from 1 to 5
points higher nnd led the gains in their
respective groups, The declaration of only
the regular dividend on Union Paclllc wns
without effect on the stock, the price In fnct
ruling nt 971!. the best nrlce of the dav.
when the announcement was made. No ex
planation wns made of the rise to 994 at
tho close by Missouri Paclllc. but It was
asserted that 11 speculative Interest was re
sponsible. Stocks which usually do not nt-

some attention todny owing to the material
character of their advances, the list Includ

Monetary conditions were viewed In a
fnvornble light owing to the steadv gain by
tho banks on subtrensurv onerntlons. this
morning's stntcment showing a gain of over
i,uwi,uw on tne ween thus far. sterling ex
change rntes continued upward, demand
hills being held quite generally above J1.8S,
while sixty-day drafts brought JI.SS11;.
The bond mnrket wns strong today, the
feature being Mohawk and Mnlone Incomes.
which advanced nearly 6 points. Total snles,
par vaiue, ji.wio.iko. united states nontts
wero all unchanged on the last call.

prices nnd the closing was at the best. The

not a heavy run of
here today, but still there were 11
ninny carried over from yestcin.iy
which made the simply on sale of ciullo
liberal proportions. Packers started In
bidding Just about steady to strong prices
ns compared with yesterday's general mnr
ket. It was noticeable, however, tint th'y
were plckltif; out the better grades and
leaving the common and light weight tutT.
For the general run of mUed hogs they
paid right around I5.t". while the heavier
grades sold largely at !5 674 and 15.70, with
some of the prime loads going ns high as
15 80. It was not 11 particularly active mar
ket, but still the bulk was disposed ot In
fallly good season.
The last end of the market did not show
tillli'h change on good stuff, hut tho light
weights sold very mean, as low as 5 25
being paid for pretty fair stuff. Commis
sion men nre warning their shippers to buy
the lightweights nt a low tlgure, as tiny
are selling far below tho heavier grades.

CATTLE There was a fair run of cnttle
here today and a good proportion of the re
ceipts was made up of western cattle. The
demand for the better grades of beef was In
good shape and Just about steady prices
were paid.
Packers started In In good season Hits
morning and bid Just about yesterday's
prices for the more dchlrablc grades of corn
fed cattle. The common and lightweight
stuff, particularly that which has been ted
only a short time, was slow sale nnd In n
good many cases sales wero made that
looked n little lower than the snmo kinds
brought yesterday. The western range beef
cattlo that were offered were of pretty fair
quality and ns high as SI. 10 was paid, which
could be quoted steady with the way grass
steers have been selling of late. Packers
seemed to want the grassers and the better
grades were soon disposed of.
There was a good demand for the better
gr. des of cows and heifers this morning nnd
Just about Hteady prices wero paid. The
common stuff, such as canners, also sold
for practically the same prices they did yes
terday, but the medium grades were neg
lected nnd In a good many cases sold about
a dime lower. Sellers found that class of
stock liaid to dispose of, ns buyers did not
seem particularly anxious for It.
Hulls, calves and stags all sold In about
the same notches they did yesterday.
Not many stockers mid feeders were of
fered todny nnd the yearlings of good qunl
Ity being In fairly good demand sold steady
to strong, but the 2-year-olds were a little
slow and In some cases weak, probably ow
ing to the fact that It Is getting toward tho
end of the wceu. iiepresentniivo sales:
