THE OMAHA DAILY BEE: SUXDAY, JULY 28, 1001. CONDITION OF OMAHA'S TRADE AixUtj Rifadin Inttiri Etuirms Uttt Naticiable Fentnra. GROCERIES AND VEGETABLES ADVANCING II ere limit (leneriilly I'iimIIIIiik to Iluy Filll Moulin llcforc They dill Sec the Outcome of the Corn Crop, Anxiety regarding future business has been vory noticeable In the wholesule dis tricts of this city during tho last week. The ftrop situation Is, of cotirbe, serious and Jobbers fully realize that upon tho success or failure of the corn crop very largely de pends the volumu of business to be trans acted during tho coming year. Tho general tendency, however, Is to look on thu bright Bldo and many even argue that It. case tho corn crop should be 11 failure that Omaha Jobbers would still do an enormous husl neus. Those that hold to that theory nay that In caso of a crop failure u great many merchants who have been In tho habit of going east for their supplies will come to Omaha, knowing that they can get good hero on short notice and thus avoid stock ing up for future requirements and taking the consequent risks. Tho merchants who patronize eastern jntirkots ate In many crises very heavy deulers and seem to havo tho Idea that they cannot get the Modi they want In this markot. It such dealers can bo Induced to come hero and Inspect thO d liferent HllnH nrflirflil lnfnt In). I...... hayo no fear of not landing their fjturo orders. A great many such merchants havo been convinced during the last year that Omaha Is the place for them to tuy and wholesalers Intend to convert tho re maining few during this coming year. It cannot bo said, then, that Jobbers -iro at all discouraged over the nrosnoet fur In. turc business, but on tho contrary they nro In a very hopeful frnmo of mind and nro making elaborate preparations for tho tn tertalninent of tho greatest number of tall buyers that has ever been Been In this city. Advantage Is being taken In the present lull to shin out ailvanen nrilpra inr full goods. An Immense amount of stock has ulready been shipped, particularly to the inr wesi, nnu tieioro many weeks havo passed tho great hulk of tho advance orders will have been titled. Tho fact that merchants are not now coming on the mar ket for fall goods simply means that tho rush will bo all the greater when It dors se.t In, and for that reason Jobbers nro anxious to get their advance orders out of tho way. Up to tho present time very few merchants have canceled or reduced their advance orders, which Is taken aa a good Indication that retailera have not lo.U thetr nerve and are not as badly worried as some people Imaglno they nro, The markets as a whole havo nqt fluctu ated to any extent, with tho exception of such lines as aro affected by the dry weather. Tho samo feature was mentioned a week ago and It Is even more noticeable this week than last. Groceries In particular havo been advancing ut a rapid rate. Sharp Advance In (irouerlen. The effects of tho dry weather h.'fve been felt to a marked degree on the market for many lines of groceries. All over tho country, and particularly In the middle west, fruits and vegetables arc reported as seriously damaged, and It Is alalmed that tho shortago will bo serious to tho extreme. J'rlces on many lines for that reason havo been going up at a rapid rato and unless rain comes soon It Is predicted that prices will ruin extremely high during tho coming year. Canned goods In particular are being held at high prices. Jobbers elnlm that there Is not a packer who will name prices on corn, tomatoes nnd small fruits for fu ture, delivery. They havo wlthdrnwn from the innrkct and no one attempts to predict whero prices will finally land. Tho spot market on such lines as mentioned above Is fully 10 cents per dozen higher than It was a. week ago and tho market Is very strong' ut tho ndvanco. Dried fruits, tho snmo as canned goods, are also going up. Evaporated npples aro 1 cent per pound higher than they wero a week ago, and peaches, penrs and apricots havo been marked up from '.; to 4 cent per pound. As long as the dry weather con tinues Indications aro, of course, favorable for still higher prices. Farinaceous goods aro also on tho boom, both rolled oats and pearl barley being considerably higher than they wero a week ago. Ilcans have ndvanced fully 2j cents per bushel and still higher prices It Is said are bound to rulo In tho near future, drcen peas, In sympathy with beans, have gone ,m niinnt in nitnlK mr bushel. As anticipated syrups aro also higher than nt last report. Tho market Is In a very strong position nt tho advance nnd a mill farther rise Is predicted, with a. great deal of certainty on both corn and sugar euco Is another line which Is on tho up grado and further advances would cause l.onn ii n chance In quotations since last report, but tho Jnurkct la stronger nnd tho demand Is on the In crease. The dealings In United States Steel stocks and to a less extent In the grangers and Pacifies overshadowed the rest of tho mar ket. The steel stocks were strong on tho same kind of operations as those of yes terday, seemingly based on a belief In an early triumph of the corporation In the strike contest. The common stock roso an extreme 14 and the preferred SH. The corn-carrying railroads were bene fited by tho weakness of the corn market and reports of the breaking of the west ern drouth. A number of minor stocks moved apparently from individual causes. Tho American locomotive stocks and Inter national 1'owor wero sharply depressed. The Canadian Pacific's subsidiary roads re sponded to tho recent strength In that stock. The Tobacco stocks, People's Ons, Amalgamated Copper, American Cotton Oil, the Virginia & Carolina Chemical stocks and a few others wero notably strong. Traders sold the market on the In crease of louns reported by the bank state ment, but thev IndJced no following and covered their snorts before the close, which was steady at the recovery.
