Deep Cuts In Moelts.
NEW YOHK, July ll.-Wnll Btreot had
nnother paroxysm of nervousness today and
made Bome deep cuts In the prices ot stocks
before equanimity had been restored. 'Ihere
were many causes assigned for the spasm
of liquidation, including some that were
palpably surmised or the result of the
Interested efforts of bear traders to In
crease tho trlght of security holders.
Hroadly considered the selling came from
largo speculators who had accumulated
stocks or had held on to them from a long
anterior date, In the hope of realizing on
the mid-July demand, which sometimes fol
lows the July illiburscmcnts and the retlux
of funds from the Interior to New toik
before they nre. needed tor moving the
crops.
That somo unexpected developments hnvo
helped to discourage this new buying and
even to Induce selling Is evident, but thu
underlying cause of the selling Is tho In
disposition ol tho New York banks to fos
ter a speculative movement at this tltrie, In
view of the exigencies of the money mar
ket which promise to come Into force ear
lier than usual this fall.
Thu damage undoubtedly done to Hit; crop
nnd tho threat of more to come was a
pofnt influence. Tho action of the corn
market Itself today Induced n feeling In
Wall street that tho crop Mtuutlon Ins
been overdUcounted In the week's st ot
market. The feeling gained ground lli.it
technical causes would have to be looked
to for an explanation of the force of the
selllnz movement.
This left the way open for many venture
some surmises as to the concealed causes
of the notable liquidation going on. Otic of
theso was that discord had broken out
afresh over tho control of the Northern Pa
cific. Facts cited to corroborate, this wcio
several. The Northern Pacltlc directors, It
was pointeil out, had met and ndjour.icd
yesterday without announcing the personal
ity of the new compromle board, Scrsa
tlonal reports were current of a stormy
meeting between the two principals In the
Northern Pacific contest.
Attention wns called to the divergent
policy of the banks representing the two
contending Interests, tho one Bide calling
loans freely on Monday, while call loan
rates were rising and tho other side coming
to the relief of the market by lending mil
lions nnd lowering the rate. The sensa
tional drop In Hock Island caused a con
jecture that thu protection of recently ac
quired large holdings In that property had
to do with the drastic liquidation In other
parts of the list. Thu liquidation spent
its greatest force during the tlrst hour when
6w),O0O shares were marketed.
A tendency toward recovery then de
veloped, which carried prices early In tne
last hour to an average level near to or
nbovo that of last night. The recover,
however, wns not held and tho closing
was unsettled und Irregular with renewed
declines In some of tho principal active
stocks.
Hock Island renched a level 714 points be
low last night, Atchison 4T4, Northwestern
5, Lackawanna 4V4. St. Paul and Iowa Ccn
tial preferred 314, Chesapeake and Ohio 314,
St, Iouls and San Frunclsco llrst preferred
3Ji nnd llaltlmnru it Ohio, Delaware &
Hudson. St. lyotils Southwestern, Chicago
& Eastern Illinois nnd Great Northern pre
ferred 3 paints each.
A number of tho prominent Industrials
declined 3 points or more and losses of 2
points nnd upwards were very numerous.
Tho call loan market continued easy and
sterling exchange also weakened. The hope
Is entertained that largo government dis
bursements will help tho money market In
the Immcdlato future. The largu liquidation
effected Is also a sensible relief, and the
prospect of Increased receipts on account
of Klondike gold Is a factor to be taken
account of.
Tho railroad bond mnrkot was moderately
active und Irregular. Total sales, par value.

CATTLE There was not a heavy run of
cattle hero today nnd a good proportion of
the receipts were western rangers, which
reduced the supply of cornfed steers con
siderably. There wore not many beef steers In the
yards and the quality of tho offerings on
tho whole wns rather common an com
pared with what hiiB been coming in of
late. Packers did not seem particularly
anxious for supplies and as a reBUlt the
market vaB more or less uneven. The
more desirable heavyweight cattle brought
Just about steady prices, but the half-fat
or lightweight cattle were very slow sale
and In a great many cases sold at 5 to 10c
lower than yesterday.
There were not many cornfed cows and
heltcrs In the yards this morning and
the better grades sold just about steady
with yesterday. The common stuff was of
course neglected and sellers thought they
had to sell them a little lower. Today tho
range season was opened In good shape
by the arrival of several cars of grass
cows from the western part of tho Btate.
Packers were of course rather afraid of
them, as they cannot tell how they will
kill out. One string sold nt $.1.50, which
looked a llttlo lower as compared with the
5J.0O cattle of yesterday and a big string
sold nt $3.10, which also looked lower, but
as this Is practically the oponlng of tho
season, It Is impossible to tell whether they
are high or low until they are dressed.
Hulls and stags sold at about steady
S rices where the quality was satisfactory,
ut slow and lower where It wns not.
About the same could be said of veal
calves.
Stockers and feeders were certainly no
higher today and It was evident that the
demand was limited. The best heavy cat
tle sold at closo to steady prices, but aside
from those tho tendency was downward.
