Afternoon Gnme.
' In spite of tlio numerous rival attrac
tions designed to separata the fcstlvo
public from Its wealth there was a crowd
nt Vinton street park yesterday afternoon
that taxed the capacity ot the grand
stand Tind bleachers. Tho sultry condi
tion of tho weather forbade any great
''amount ot enthusiasm and "grandstand"
plays were not on the bill. For all that It
was a great gamo of hall that closed the
present series between the Prohibitionists
and Papa O'ltourke's pets. It was a gamo
that kept the fans on the ragged edge all
the way along until the grand finale.
Dut we licked 'em 6 to i and the glad
crowd drifted homo through ' the fresh
breeies and dust stirred up by a big bank
of black clouds from the northwest, sat
isfied that wo are tho people. Tho Prohlbs
beat tho great Blues and so did we; then
wo beat tho Prohlbs, so there you are.
Sandy McDermott bad his burn eye along
and a couple of his base decisions
(not a pun) were so bad that they evoked
a snort- of disgust oven from Buckerlno
Keith and "us umpires must stand to
gether." How It Happened,.
As for tho game, hero Is the way It hap
pened: Dusty Coons didn't like tho looks
of Thicl. the first man up, so he handed him
a pass to get htm out of the way. O'Leary
eacrlfled and Warner swatted the ball over
against left field tence for two sacks and
of course Mr. Thiol floated over tho plate.
'McVlckor followed with bard drive out
into the territory presided over by Mr.
Oonlrii, late of Cleveland, for n safe hit.
Genius fielded the ball quickly to Stowart
who planted It gleefully In Mattle's ribs,
becauso Mattio erred in thinking It was
good for two bases. But In the meantime
Warnor had drifted over the plate and
handed Hunky Hlnes tho second tally.
Werden picked out one ot Coons' easy ones
and planted It safely In middle garden, but
was forced at second on Hlnes' grounder
to McAndrews.
'In the second O'Connell knocked one
into Grandpa Duckloy nnd before Grandpa
could recover himself tho cx-Omahog
perched on flrst. Klelnow knocked a fun go
to Coons, who threw to Toman on second
a yard ahead of O'Connell, but McDermott
said safe and tho little shortstop was so
rattled that he forgot to throw to first
to head oft the Dutch catcher. Glade
forced Klelnow and Thiol forced Glade at
second, O'Connell scoring In the meantlmo
nnd O'Leary ended the agony by expiring
at first.
Pretty Work In Third.
The third brought out somo mighty pretty
work by tho long pitcher. After Warner
had died at first McVlckor drew four wldo
ones, Werden made his second safe hit and
lilncs got a life on a rank error of Mc
Andrews. With but one mit and tho bases
full It looked pretty bad for the locals, hut
Dusty Coons had his nerve with him and
calmly floated them over, striking out both
O'ConnolI nnd Klelnow.
Des Moines gathered their last run In
tho seventh on Toman's mlsploy and
Warner's third two bagger.
Tho Hourkctt tied the scoro In tho first
on a hit, n sacrifice, n stolon baso and a
p.-imoil ball. In tho third they took the
lead on an error of Werden, a double hy
Stewart and slnglo by Dan Buckley, which
netted two runs. Tho winning run was
scored In tho ninth. Buckley was flrst up
and made a safo hit, Gondlng sacrificed
nlcoly and Pity no camo up In place of
Coons, Freddy Glado planted tho hill In
tho Doctor's anatomy nnd tho latter limped
down to tlrst. but was forced at second hy
