SEPTEMBER CLOSES ONE-EIGHTH UP Anxlnn T.onir Sellers Mnkr Corn IM( InlrrrstliiK tint l.owrr on Mliernl Union ill iik Provisions Hull nml l.ouer. CHICAOO, July 3.-IIIgher cables caused k strong opening In the wheat market today uid exclusive ralnlulls In tho northwest reinforced the foreign news, resulting In the September dellvtry closing llrm unci Hs higher. Heptember corn closed tic loner. Oats were Uc lower, vhll! provisions ranged nil the way from Vc to 2oo lower ut tliu close. ... . , . Wheat opened llrm on higher cables, dtio to reports or Kronen crop damage. 1 hu market wuh heavy and fluctuations were qundncd within a narrow range. Most of tho buying order came from outsider and certain local shorts, who were evening up over tho Ku.irth. (.'ontlnued favorable ac counts of winter wheat harvest were the chief hindrances to any pronounced bullish noHs. September opened a shade to i'ti lo higher at WWc to Cr. Tin; bulk of tho trading was tlono around MH'rllMlic and the ciOsc was c higher at uiMn'iviC. Seaboard reported 3i boat loads taken for export, while clearances of wheat ami Hour wero eijual to aoUM bushels, 1'rltnnry receipts today nero 5ii.',ti0 bushels. Minneapolis and Duluth reported 137 cars, against 15.1 last week. Local receipts were 31 cars, 4 of con tract grade. Tho com pit furnished tho most Interest to traders today, but tho opening was somewhat easier, duo. to the general preva lence of thunderstorms during the last twoiity-four ho.irs. The situation In MIs Bourl and Kansas, however, where rain was most needed, remained unchanged. Longs were, anxious to secure pronto and there was consequently considerable selling, country traders were good buyers, Septem ber ranged between PiVic and 47i closing ic ower at Kc. Local receipts were 142 cars, 2 of contract grade. Tho early tendency In oats was toward a lower level, mostly In sympathy with corn. However, many of the early sellers turned buyers later on bullish Russian cables. There was liberal selling early for outside account, nnd local sellers were led by Phil lips, who sold quite a considerable quantity or Heptember. There was free liquidation of Jjly by commission houses. The weekly crop bulletins were unfavorable, showing little or no rain In the southwest yesterday. The September option ranged between 27V4C nnd 'iVnC, closing with a loss of Vtc at 21Wl Local receipts wern TO cars. Provisions were dull, with a general downward tendency. The opening was lower on heavy receipts of hogs and lower prices for the same. There was some liquidation by outside longs and also some selling for snort nccount In a moderate way. Trade was small and following the rather sharp break ut the opening there were no violent changes. Local packers bought on the de cline. Heptember pork ranged between J14.V2U and JIMS, closing 50c lower at 114.02V. Lard sold between $8.45 and $S.f.o. closing ldc lower at the former figure, Hlbs ranged between $7.85 and $S.02',4, closing 20c lower at $7.S7V4. Estimated receipts for Friday: Wheat, (V) cars; corn, 170 cars; oats, 135 cars; hogs, 22, OoO head. The leading futures rangad as follows: Articles. Open. I lllgh.l Ijow. Close. Ycs'y. Tho volume of business was so sum 11 that had there been a wide price movement little significance could have attached to the fact. The subject of most vital Interest on tho exchange was whether It would be possible to get together u quorum of the governors to achieve the longed for adjournment of the exchange until Monday next. When Oil was accomplished It was greeted with cheers. The leader In surh market as there was was t'nlted Slates Steel. That Btock reflected clearly enough tho disappointment of holders over tho dividend, or rather over the wording of the dividend declartton, Speculators sold the stock freely. Tho pre ferred stirfered even morn markedly, declin ing 3S from the top level. The common fell V.'f from tho best. The effort or belated borrowers to secure loans to carry over the four-day Interval until Monday caused a lively Hurry In money. As high as 28 per cent was paid for call loans and consider able liquidation was precipitated. The last hour was the most actlvo of the day on tho closing up of accounts, and a number of leading stocks were carried down a point or more, Tho apprehension was felt that th effect of a weak bank statement would have to bo faced when trading was resumed on next Monday. The bond market was dull nnd Irregular. Total sales, par value, $1,785,000. United Slates bonds were all unchanged on the last call. The Commercial Advertiser's London financial cablegram says: There was a general exodus to the Henley regatta today which left the Stock exchange practically empty. There was no business In domestic rails and American shares were quite lien lected In view of the approaching long New ork holiday. Copper stocks wero flat with other metals. Maney on call Is easier at T4 per cent nnd discounts nt 2 7-16 par cent. The Rank of England today received no gold, but JC&oiOO was bought In tho market by Austria. Exchange on Paris Is 25.18. The market could not be quoted much higher, but an early clearance. was onectcii ana me pnees ptuu wcie generally very satisfactory. Ruycrs started out early In the morning and bought up the better grades of beer steers at steady to strong prices, as com pared with yesterday. They seemed to wunt the cattle today, and as there were only a few offered, sellers took advantage ot the opportuidty to push values up n little. The situation, however. Is best de scribed by calling It a good, steady to strong market. Tho commoner grades of course did not move as freely ns did tho choice heavyweights, but still they brought fully as much as was paid for the same grades yesterday. There were only a few cows and heifers on sale today, and most of thoso that were offered were grassers of rather an Inferior quality. There was not enough change In the prices paid from those In force yes terday to be worthy of mention, so that the market can bo quoted practically steady. Hulls, calves and stags also sold In Just about tno same notcnes tney aiu yester day. Thero were more Htockers and feeders In the yards today than have been here for some little tltno past. It was rather a poor time, however, lor them to arrlvo, as there will be very little demand for stock cattle the rest of this week, and those who bought them had to figure on carrying them over until the first of next week. As a result prices were considerably lower, and undesirable stuff was almost unsalable. Stock heifers In particular were hard to illspose or, ana some or tne sales lookeu pretty low. neprescniauve pans: BEEF STEERS. No. 1 3 4 1 1 6 42 1 : 21 10 43 3) 24 43 19 18 1 20 32 U Av. . 810 Pr. Other markets wero quoted considerably lower, and as a result prices here dropped about 7Vic ns compared with yesterday's general market. The bulk of the early Fales went at $3.75. with the choicer loads going at $5.7714 and $S.R0. Owing to the big sunnly. however, the mnrket weakened as the morning advanced and packers were finally offering only 33.72H nnd $.7.75. After I ho llrst few rounds tho market could be quoted THGilOc lower, ln spite of the fnct that there was a sharp ilecllne tne market was nutte active ami the hulk of the offerings wero lllspoed or in goon season. The last cm' if the market was very alow und weak nnd fully a dime lower. On the extreme close It took good hogs to bring $5.72. and the lighter weights sold from that price down. Chicago was quoted mostly a dime lower and closed weak at the decline, so that this mnrket Is well In line, the bulk of all the hogs today sold at $3.72i und $3.75. Representative sates; No. av. Sh.
