Springs, Mo., calls to the minds of
many Black Hills peoplo many In
cidents of the life of the man who
s considered one of the greatest
govornracnt scouts nnd Indian fighters
of the west. In the early iOs he
watt a trader with the Indians across tbo
border In Cauada from Montana and ho
and his party of eleven Amerlenn traders
were the cause of a bitter fight wltb the
Blackfect Indians. The party of whiles
had been trading peaceably with the As-
slnnbolnes across the Canadian line when
they wero driven back Into Montana by the
Blackfeot Indians. Tho party of whltei
Fifty Indians were killed.
Tho Canadlnn government heard of tilt
battlo and called for a requisition for Har-
wlck and his men, They were all arrested
and confined for (tlx weeks in tbe jail nl
Helena while nn Investigation was made.
A special commission was appointed by th
secretary of stato and It was finally de
cided thnt the men could not bo extradited,

plications arose between the Canadian gov
ernment and tbe United States. That wai
