THE OMAHA DAILY BEEt SUNDAY, JUNE 80, 1001. 21 CONDITION OF OMAHA'S TRADE Volume of BmlniM far Jant Ooml dirtbl Ahead f Lint Yw. SUGAR ADVANCED FIVE POINTS With Comparatively Few Exceptions Prices on Staple Lines Are Prac tically the Same n They Were ft Week Ao. In spite of the extremely warm weather of last week both retailers and wholesalers report trade ns being very satisfactory. Warm weather Roods have been In good de mand and retailers aru sending In a good many sorting up orders, showing that their stocks are beginning to run low. The de mand from farmers out through the coun try was, of course, rather light last week, as they are now very busy with their crops, but still enojgh of them found their way to town to give merchants a fairly good trade. According to all reports the condi tion of small grains, aH well as of corn, Is in excellent condition In nearly all sections of the country tributary to this market nnd as a result merchants nra In excellent spirits and nro all very confident that future business will break nil previous records. . , Taking the- month of June as a wholo there Is little to complain of regarding the business situation. The weather the first part of the month woh, of course, unsea sonable and retailers did not sell as much stock as they expected to, but since that time they havo been doing better und they are now well satisfied. Jobbers also report the volume of their business for the mutith as being fully as good as for the corre sponding month of last year and In many instances far ahead. In view of the favorable outlook for crops merchants aro buying very freely of fall and winter goods. In practically all lines Jobbers say they have sold mora goods for full delivery than ever before up to this time. Orders aru still coming In very freely, as merchants who have been holding buck are now liberal buyers. Traveling men nil say they expect to do a big business during, the next fow weeks In rounding up the. late buyers. There havo been very fow market changes during the week. A few advances have taken placo, but outsldo of two or three changes there Is nothing of much Impor tance, The situation Is best described by calling the general market active and llr.n. SnKnr Five Points Illithcr. Hugar Is ono of the few lines that havo advanced since last report. The demand Is now very heavy and is Increasing rapidly. Tho advance for the week amounts to 5 points. Therd Is nothing new In coffee, ns the market Is practically tho same. One day the market may be up ,(, of n cent and the next day It Is down n trifle, so that It over ages up Just about steady. The new crop of Japan tea Is now on tho market, this being tho earliest date that tho May pick ings have ever arrived at this point. Last year tho first shipments did not como In until some time In August. Ono wholesale house of this city Inst week received 1,000 packages and after a careful examination tho quality of the tcu was reported excep tionally line ahd In fuct It was never bet ter. The cause for tho good condition of tho crop Is probably found In the fact that the weather was very favorable In Japan when the tea was growing. The consumption of cheese Is keeping up at a remarkable rate nnd prices for that Mason ore being ndvanccd. On tho Wis consln boards the advance amounts to K of a cent and on the New York boards to H cent. , .? Kftfcted through these columns scv .Sinl.i7eelK "J1"11!1 Jnr" ,iaVo advanced considerably. Prices Did Up Freely by Optimistic Professional Oncrntor. NEW YORK, Juno 29. Professional oper ations played a largo pnrt in today's stock market, but the professional operators bought stocks quite trccly und bid up prices with confidence. The conviction thnt the money market will show progress toward great caso next week, with the disburse ment ot funds accumulated for thu purpose of puytng half yearly dividends and Intel est, was the mainspring of this contldenco. There was relief nlso over the settling up of thu nffalrs of the Stock exchange house which closed Its doors yesterday. Although the embarrassment of this housq came as a surprise to tho general public, Its strug gle to secure means to continue has been known to business connections for some time nnd has created dread or tho effect of the failure. It Is believed thnt the greuter part of Its credits had been accumulated with tho bank, who suspension was cuused thereby. Willi the shock of the an nouncement passed and nffulrs In course of settlement, the atmosphere Is felt to be clearer. The corn-carrying grangers were In con spicuous demand today on account of fa vorablo reports regarding tho coin crop. Illinois v-emrai rose a, at, t'nui aid unu Rock Island 2V4. Thorn was n fair t.nrlnk- ling of Rains reaching il nnlnt nr mnrn among the Important standard stocks. The loss ot cusn mown by the bunk statement was less than the known movements of money had Indicated. Tho larae decrease In loans was attributed to Stock cxchimcn liquidation and was to thu hciu'lK nf tint surplus, but It Is probable that large i (.'pay ments of Byndlcato loans nura In the loan item. v nue tno money uisturunlico ot Hie week precipitated somo liquidation, tluro were ulso lareo sums loani-il nn th i. chango by largo financial Interests with the purpose oi cnecKing oemorallf.itlon. T S. te. 50 lUUIIHlll Wfc y Other buyers J '"j Total CATTLE There wero not enough cattle on sale today to make a ,th 1 week tho supply haa been fairly liberal, a good gain having been made over the previ ous week, but the supply Is short of the u.air nt Inst vear. The table of receipts abovo will show the comparative receipts tor tno monwi ui uu "- -ror tho last several weeks. Tho tendency of prlcos has been down ward all the week and particularly Is that true of tho commoner grudcB.- The choicest bunches of corn fed steers are probably not over 5c or 10c lower for the weok, or as compared with tho high time, which was two weeks ago last Tuesday, such grades aro about 15c lower. Ily good grades are meant the kinds that are selling now for $5.26 or better. The cattlo selling under $5.2o are 152oc lower for the week or 20ft40c lower than tho high time. The less dc Blrable the cattlo the greater has been tho decline. The range of prices between tho common and tho choice cattle Is now tho greatest that has been experienced In a long UTho market on cows and heifers has otso been going down at a rapid rate. Tim same as In tho caso of beof steers tho decline Is greatest on tho commoner grades and also on tho grosserB. As compared with tho high time tho choicest heavyweight cattlo are probably not over 154125c lower, but the less desirable grades are from 40c to 60c lower. The market for the last two weeks or more has been very unoven and for that reason It Is difficult to muko comparisons between present prices nnd those In forco a week ago. Light heifers have perhnps slumped tho most of all and next to them comes the ordinary run of gross cows. Tho tendency of prices on bulls, cnlves and stags has been downward the past wuek In sympathy with the decline on steers nnd cpw stuff. The supply of stockers and feeders has been very light nil tho week and the best kinds have held right around steady. Any thing but the choicest stuff, however, Is slow sale and lower. HOQS There was a good Saturday's run of hogs hero today, but still tho supply for the week la considerably short of the pre ceding week. There was a good demand on tno part ot local pacKcrs. ana as a result the market opened a good 2(4c higher than yesterday. The long string sold nt $5.90, with the bulk from $5.87 to $J.!2V4. Somo of tho choicer loads sold at $5.95 and as high ns $6, was raid. It was a fairly nctlve markot and practlcully everything wuu sold in gooa season. Tho hog market the last week has been In fairly good shape. The market wus itho highest tho first of the week and on Tues day tho average cost reached a fraction over $5.99, which is tho high point of the month. Tho week closed a shndo lower than on Monday and a shade higher than tho close nf last week and about 20c higher than the first of tho month. As compared with a year ago values are nbout 60c higher, nnd as compared with two years ago there Is an advance of $2.25. Repre sentative sales: No. Av. Sh. Pr. No. 73.. 87.. 72.. 72.. 60,. SS..
