THE OMAHA DAILY BEE; StyPAY, MAY 26. 1901. 21 CONDITION OF OMAHA'S TRADE Jebbiif Trad in Prtcticallj All Lbes Ctatiimw Trj EitisfacUrt. BUT FEW FAILURES AMOKG RETAILERS Market on Praetlcnll y All Lltir li ood Health; Condition nnd lint Verr Important riuctuntltm nenortrd lor Lt WeeU. Jobber In nearly nil linn report a narked Improvement In trade during the past week Farmer are getting through with the harden jiurt of their early spring work and for that reason are making more frequent trip to town Retailer are now having quite a trade and at the present rate It will not take long for their Hocks to begin to run low. The cooler weather of the latter part of the week of course Interfered with the rapid movement of neanonable linen, but Mill taking the week ait a whole, trade wa verj atlfactory. Jobber report sorting up orders a being on the increase and look for u ntlll greuter Improvement In the near future Traveling men are mil meeting with good mct-ear In landing fall order and so far have sold a good deal more stock than thev did during the corresponding period of last year. In one way that fact is rather surprising, as It is well known that jobbers carried over connlderuble stook from last winter, owing to the lack of cold weather. But for some reason there are enough retailers who are not supplied to buy sufficient stock to make up for the deficiency and more, too The market is In a pood, healthy ron dltiort, nnd, while a namber of fluctuations tout- t):rn tiln-f. Mill there is nothing very startling to report The few chance ( that have come to nonce are nonuy m the direction of higher prices, except in cases where the arrival of this year s Ftocl: on thn market Is causing prices to decline, as would naturally be evperted Collections on the whole are In fairly (rood condition, though they might lie bet ter It Is a noticeable fact, however, that there has rarely been a season hen few.r failures were reported than have come to the attention or local Jobbers this year. .Suftnr lteninlim Menilj. Thrre has been no change In the sucr market since last report so far as refined Trade are concerned Raws, however, are quoted a trifle higher. The cool weather which prevailed over a good section of the country last week had a tendency and out down the demand lemporarl! and also to delay the ripening of fruit, which postpones the period of greatest contiutnp tlon of sugar. The cheese market is quoted a trifle lower than It vrut a week ago, owing to the appearance of new Wisconsin stock. It is raid to be exceptionally fine this year, tie cause of the good pasturage In that state In canned goods there has not been rrfjh of any char.ee. Spot tomutoes are firm at last week's quotations, bJt prices have not changed. The situation In salmon on the Columbia river Is the Bame as It was a week iico. The run of fish continues , very light and the outlook for anything I like a satisfactory catch Is rather dls- couraging. Tor that reason spring caught 1 Columbia river salmon will rule high n i price this year Packers of sardines are I now. at work, this being considerably earlier than they started last year. A good run of fish Is reported so far and i as a result the market is easing off a ' little. New roods, hnn-ever. will not h . available for the next ten days or two ! . ,. 1 ed the sattie ns men It is claimed i all".I."cnrp a.?a Dried fruits are renort they were a week ago. though that peaches are cettlnir rnt desirable lots are hard to obtain at rntls factory prices. The name Is true of the better grades of apricots. The situation in fruit 1nrs Is attracting considerable attention. Those who are in a position to know say that there Is no doubt but what prices will rule consider ably higher before the season comes to a close. Local Jobbers are advising their customers to anticipate their wants and buy now, when they can get the goods and when prices are at a low point. The tendency always is for retailers to hold orr until the last minute and then they frequently find that they cannot get the roods when they want them, and, besides that, they often have to pay fancy prices. The outlook for a big fruit crop all over the country Is very flattering, which of course means a big consumption of fruit Jars, and for that reason Jobbers are look ing for some lively hustling for Jars dur ing the height of the season. More Actlvltr in Dry Goo, The demand for dry goods showed con siderable improvement last week More buyers were in the city than during the previous week and they also placed more liberal orders. Those who were interviewed yu i;ic tunuiumi oi iraoe in melr respective territories said that the snrinir rii.mnnii ' was now Just getting well under wav Up 1 to this time farmers have been too busy to go to town, but now they are becinnlnc to do their buying and from this time on rrtallers look for a good, lively trade The i r.rulnlT OI lnf! 'Rtter part of the week I cij course temporarily curtailed trude in mo counirj-. nut as soon us the weather warms up again a brisk demand should set in. . TiraJ!'n,,.lnE nien are Btl" "1UB goods for rail delivery ut a more rapid rute than they anticipated. In nearly all cases sales men are making better records than they did a year ago. which Is saying a good deal when the mild winter Is taken Into con slderatlon. Jobbers were rather afruld nd vance business this .war would be rather light, but developments up to this time le-M B " 'r 'eUr" 10 hBVe bwn There Is no market news of lnterept to report. Thev ure not doing any complaining, however, lltA,)'J,''i cn1dent that there Is to be decided improvement In the near future. Owing to the slack trade retailers have had up to this time they are not taking hold any too well of m tock, but still jobbers report advance business about as food as It was a year ago. The supply of rattle for the past week has not neen particularly heavy, ns a glance at the table of receipts will show. The demand, however, has been ln good shujie and the murket each day ruled strong and active, with an early clear ance. The big end of the receipts continues to be tnude up of beef steers. Pucker, though, have been liberal buyers all the week and values huve advanced ull the way fiom 30c to 20c The greatest advance of course is on the heuvler and more de sirable grades, while the light .nd com -non kinds ure perhaps no more than a dime hither. The general run of good to choice cattle are probably about 15c higher. The supply of cow stuff has been light all the week, while the demand has been very liberal As a result the tendenry of prices has been upwnrd and for the week the market can be qjotcd strong to a dime higher, the greatest udvance being on the more desirable grades The market was uctlve ull the week and it did not take buy ers long: to clear the yurds of all the de sirable kinds. Bulls huve also improved somewhat dur ing the week, the same as cows and steers. Tho better grades sold without difficulty, but, as Is generally the case, the coarsest grudes were rather neglected. Slugs ait alS'i u little higher and veal calves have met with ready sale ut good, strong prices. The supply of slot-ken- and feeders hus been very light ull the week There are a good many orders in the hands of comml"- Mi0" mtn ioT Pood entile weighing from COO 10 m Pounds, but the cuttle have not been coming forward with which to fill the orders Owing to the scarcity, prices hnve advanced, but it is difficult to tell Jut-t how much, as there have not been enough on saie to xnuKe u test 01 tne marKet. HOGS There was another heavy run of hogs here today, over 13,000 head being on sulc. ln view of the liberal supplv the murket opened a big nickel lower und u little SlOW.
