of transactions established yesterday was
not disturbed bv today's business. Dealings
wero on a smaller enio than yesterday. In
fact It was not until tho urgent selling
movement of the last hour had gained full
headway that the market presented any
thing like tho animation which character
ized It yesterdav. Speculative sentiment
ran over ptcttv niudi the whole gamut ot
emotions from that of buoyant elation dur
ing the morning to something like collapse
In the afternoon
Although tho market closed at net de
clines throughout, extending In vomo cases
to 3 or I points, or even more, there was a
tlmo during the morning when the level ot
prices was materially higher than yester
day and tho market had tho appearance of
a full resumption of tho bull speculation.
The high-priced railroad stocks continued
to bo tho principal subject in tho specula
tion, especially St. Paul, I'nlon Paelllo and
Southern Paclllc. Atchison preferred moved
upward nnd there wero points of strength
among the southwtydcrns, Burlington anil
Northern Paclll'3 were, strong and held hot
ter than the average of stocks Iu the late
break. Among tho specialties Amalga
mated Copper recovered quite vigorously
from yesterday's depression and United
States Steel stocks made a show of strength
for tho llrst lime In several days. These
were the principal centers of the rally
strength In Mio market, but their Influence
was radiated pretty generally through the
list. It would bo somewhat dltllcult to as
sign causo for tho early strength or the
late weakness, as it seemed to depoud lltllu
on news of the day. The motives of tho
traders w?ro confined for the most part to
fears or suspicions of what others wero
doing.
Powerful sunnort and violent uintilniila-
tlon wero resorted to In the earlv denllmis
and tho success of these measures In turn
ing prices upward caused a heavy coveting
movement among the huge short Interest,
which was formed veslerdiiv. Them worn
Intimations during the morning that an mu
cin! statement rocardlnc; tho Hiirllncton
deal would bp given out later In the day
hiki a rumor wns current uiai it would no
round to provide nn exchange of bonds to
tho value of ISO per cent and a cash pay
ment of $20 per share, together with a ensh
payment ot $2 per share for the next divi
dend. Tho report that tho price, of steel
rails was to be advanced to $2S per ton was
the cause of tho advance In United States
Steel, although professional maiilntitatloii
was much In evidence, nn It wns hi all parts
ot ino manteis. i no announcrmeni over
night of an engagement of $l,noUHJO In gold
for export seemed to have lltlo effect on
sentiment and reports were set nfloat that
largo blocks of government bonds wero held
ready to orter for redemption, which pro
vided gold for any export demand without
nffectlng tho money market. Tho source ot
mis avaiuiDio supply or government bonds
was not disclosed. Sterllnir exelnrnirn nlso
yielded slightly under tho offerings against
me gout snipmcut. Probahly its recovery
later In tho day was a large Influence in
tho renewed uneasiness, manifest over tho
money outlook.
The suu-trcasurv Is acaln takltiB monev
from the market and New York exchange
In tho Interior has fallen back to a dis
count. Indicating a cessation of the sunnlv
of funds, from that source. Tho adjourn
ment of tho Ilur lncton directum without
offering official announcement was a disap
pointment, nucccss oi ino uuus gelling
prices un was offset bv tho verv heavv
offerings to rcallzo attracted by tho nd-
vanre. i nis was especially so in tno uniicq
States Steel stocks, owing to tho suspicion
prevalent In Wall street that heavy liqui
dation is going on In theso stocks on the
part of former largo Interests In tho Indi
vidual companies absorbed by tho combina
tion ana who nro retiring, near selling also
becamo very bold and extensive when the
futility of the bull efforts to sustain tho
market began to ho seen. Tho closlnc was
weak at tho lowest and showed such violent
aecunes rrom tno top level as r!4 in Sugar,
4i In St. Paul, 4V4 In Brooklyn Transit, 4 hi
Consolidated Gas, 414 In Rock Island and
from 1 to over 3 points In a long list of Im
portant stocks.
Tno pond market was actlvo and lrreiru-
