CATTliK There won a fairly liberal run
of cattle hero today and as the demand on
the part of all the packers seemed to bo
liberal tho irmrket opened stronger and na
tive nil around.
Iteef steers met with ready sale today at
prices that looked strong us compared with
tho prices paid yesterduy. In some rases
rattlo undoubtedly sold quite a little higher
than they did yesterday, where they Just
liappened to suit the buyers. It wns a good,
nctlvc, stiong market on nil grades and tho
yards were cleared In good season.
The demand for row stuff was also In
snort shapo and prices were a little stronger.
The situation could best bo described by
railing It a good, strong, active markot
on both tho good stuff nnd the medium
grades. Cannrrs ulso met with ready sale
at fully steady prices. Tho receipts wero
not at all exeesslvo and as a result tho bulk
of th offerings wero cleaned up In good
senson,
nulls and stags" also brought strong prices
today mid veal calves were picked up at
good, firm prices.
Choice feeders sold as high as ever today,
several loads bringing as much as H.90. but
they wr.ro good stuff. The demand for fend
ers was In fair shape this morning In spite
of tho bail weather, but It was noticeable
that It was only the better grades that
were wanted. Anything on tho common
order was neglected and hard to move at
nny price. Representative snlcs:

HOOS The supply of hogs today wa9
about up to expectations anil as lnvorable
reports were received lrom other markets
trading started out on a basis of u strong
2!sc advance. The general run of mixed
hogs sold at JO 00, with tho better grades
going at J'UCl'j and 6.05 and as high at
6.o7'n was paid for prime heavyweights.
At tlioM) prices sellers cut loose qultu rap
Idly, but beforo tho bulk of the offerings
had changed hands .the market cased off
and packers wanted to buy the rest at
5.97VS and J0.O0, or only a littlu stronger
than yesterday's general market. Sellers
weru holding for thu morning prices and
as n result not much was done for a time.
Tho last hair of tho market was very
slow and weak, tho advance being fully
lost. Packers were only bidding $5.95 nnd
5.97VS and as a result It was late befort

NKW YORK. April '.'.-Todny's stock
mnrket wns tempestuous nnd uneven. It
was swept by 11 storm of liquidation this
morning, which cauicd some Motent de
clines nml carried prices below yesterday's
level throughout. The benrs did tint eein
disposed to pursue the contest In the face
of tlie character of support which they
encountered. Earlier loises were largely
recovered, but the late actlvljy und strength
of the market centered very largely In Bur
lington nnd Northern Pacllle on n revival
of reports of a transfer of control of tlie
former. Burlington had sold down to lT2-fi
on the realizing movement, but on the rally
It gained headway on the belief that the
terms offered to stockholders would bo
equivalent to pn and the pllco crnnsed (hat
ilgure by tj, and then fell back on realizing.
Northern Pnclllc touched 97.
The cenernl market had recovend well
nfler the shorts began to cover und the
turn had boon made, but It did not follow
Burlington and Northern Pacllle to u
marked extent lu their Dual spurt and the
closing was decidedly Irregular op renewed
protlt-tuklug, The early break was lu some
part due to the perception thnt the I'nlled
Stntes Steel stocks had been opened high
by manipulation and that realizing in them
wns very large The whole market, in fnct,
opened higher on the average, the ntoof
stocks all showing strength and Burlington.
St. Paul and Manhattan gaining a point or
over. The same brokers who sold Pulled
States Sleel so heavily yesterday continued
selling today. Probably not a little reallz
ug was Induced by tho announcement that
It had been discounted, the Inclusion of the
Superior Consolidated lion mines and the
Iron Bridge company In the merger. The
lncrcnso In the capital of $250,OOo,oOO over
that llrst ennteniiihitrd also leaves 11 lib
eral margin to the account of the syndicate
after the terms of the nddltlonnl exchange
have been fulfilled. Dealings lu the steel
stocks continued In enormous volume. On
the break Rock Island was handled with
notable severity, being forced 2'4 under
last night s cloyc The sled storks were
also conspicuous In the decline. But there
wero stocks In practically every Important
group which wero forced from 1 to 2 points
under last night. The southwestern rail
roads were prominent In tlie inllv and other
points of notable strength during tho day
were Sugar, Anaconda, Amalgamated Cop
per, Manhattan nnd Pacllle Mall, which
rose from 1 to 3 bolnts. and Colorado Fuel,
which rose nn extreme 7',, with recurrent
strength. Northwestern. St. Paul & Omaha
preferred and Now York & Harlem rose 5
to 64 and Uickawunna 23,.
Tho money market was helped bv tho dis
bursements of government Interest, tho
checks for which passed through tho clear
ing house today and made the subtrcasury
Vmt InMHutloti to the extent
of $2,332,822. But the subtreasury has al
ready taken $2,702,000 from the market sineo
I-rldny, notwithstanding 11 payment on nc
count of a deposit of $750,V) In foreign gold
mado nt San Francisco. Sterling exchange
rates were slightly lower, but continental
oxchangu hardened nnd additional gold ex
ports are expected. Tho rate rnllv was on
tho announcement from Washington that
i,,"fl-crf,l"riv nf treasury had bought
$2,0W,0O0 of short time bonds for the sinking
fund, having received an offer which com
piled with his requirement thnt the bonds
should bo on a basis to make tho Invest

This Implies 11 llguro below the market
price of the bonds and does not seem likely
t yield further largo returns to tho money
