CHICAGO, Mnrch 28.-Spcculatlvc Interest
on chango wus iiK'iln focused on corn to
day ntvl the market, after estnhllshlng n
now high record for Mny, closed ?iu over
yesterday. Other markets were dull, wheat
closing unchatiKed, oats u shudo up and
provisions 2Vd5o deiircBsed.
Corn opened with sentiment only a shado
easier, although the rather bearish en-
Kemlilo of news tnlitht have excused greater
wcaxness in a marKci less coiiinieni ot tne
emallness of stocks. The weather, to begin
with, was Improved, receipts were liberal
und contaltiid a larcelv Increased propor
tion of contract corn, while cables were In-
uiriercm. .otwiwiMtaniung tins array 01
conslderutlnns the market opened un
changed at 42'fc and In a few minutes
touched I2',4fi isfte. Trade was light for the
moment. One llrm let out ino.oii) bu. and
reported freer country offerings and tho
Initial llrmuesR was replnced by a tone of
greater ease, May dropping to 42c, Hero
tho market steadied ami began that steady
appreciation which culminated In a new
high record price for May delivery, doing It
Jn the faco of strenuous efforts of certain
bear hotiHCH to hold It. The bull leader was
only a moderate buyer, but outsiders, who
Heein to Im the stanchest hulls In thu mar
ket, together with scalpers who sold early
mid uulckly ran to cover, were purchasers
and May .during tho afternoon touched 4'lc.
Hear reslstanco had gradually been snuffed
out and probably M.w) bu. would cover the
offerings ut the top price. Tho close was
strong, "ic over yesterday, nl 12?fec. Local
receipts were 183 cars, 37 of contract grade,
while at primary points receipts were IIIT.OOO
bu., compared with 771,'Mn) bu. a year into.
The advance curtailed chipping bids.
Vhcat was dull, narrow and uninterest
ing. Much of tho time business was at a
utuudsttll, while traders turned 11 wistful
cyo on tho superior animation of corn. It
was tho strength of this market which
unveil whent from succumbing to tho preva
lent bcarlshncss. Even reports of lly dam
igcs wero received with apathy. Heavy re
ceipts and tho weakness of tho export situ
utloii, thu mild clear weather and tho
optmlsm of the 1'rlco Current report com
bined to create bearish sentiment. It was
Judged unwise to tempt fate too far, with
tho bullish corn market so close a neighbor,
and May, having opened a shade to y.e
lower at 75,c to 7'4lj75Tie, declined only to
7rc. A long period of Rtaguatloii followed
this decline, till near the closu tho market
rallied In sympathy with corn und closed
unchanged at 7."i7Ge. Exporters reported
20 loads taken. Seaboard clearances In
wheat and Hour were equal to fifil.COO bu.,
While primary receipts aggregated 748,000
bu compared with KW.oOO bu. a year ntfo.
Local receipts wero 00 cars, nono of con
tract grade. Minneapolis nnd Dullith re
ported a total of 201 cars, against 377 last
week and 490 a year ago. Tho l'rlco Cur
rent not only minimized reports of lly tliim
nge, but declared that tho weutucr was un
favorable to Insect life.
Oats wero In excellent demand for ship
ment, but for future delivery business was
tdugglsh and prices appeared to bo In need
of all tho strength corn could lend. It was
reported from New York, howuver, that
oats, were beginning to attract more at
tention and that Germany, after long Idle
ness here, had bocomo a buyer. English In
quiries wero numerous' and It was said that
no surprise would bu occasioned should
Franco enter the lists. Receipts hero wero
104 cars. May sold between 25c and 23Uc
und closed a shado higher at 23Uc.
Provisions wero dull nnd easier. Tho
murket'opened steady on light hog receipts
and higher prices for tho same, but soon
turned easier on selling by packers and
loOnl operators. There was a good cash de
mand. May pork sold between J15.70 nnd
JIMO and cloned 2.r,c lower at J15.47H: May
lard, between JS.07',4 and $S. closing 2V4iiic
down at J8.02W. and May ribs, between W

NEW YORK. Mareb 28 Thn stnek mar
ket continued highly professional today nnd
distinctly two-sided. Tho outside specula
tive public Is stlh on the side of tho bulls
nnd that element of tho speculation con
tinued to havo the situation well In control.
Any new point of strength which they de
veloped was tiretty well assured of a re
sponse from the following of smaller specu
lators, who keep the current markot going.
The selling to tuku profits continued very
large nnd was so skilfully managed as to
do little damage to prices, but there was a
bear clement amomr tho traders und they
made occasional demonstrations in the mar
ket when the burden of tho realizing
seemed In a wnv to overcome the advance.
The bear clement, however, attracted llttlo
outside following and their operations were
not conducted witn great confluence. Tlie
most nrnmlnent nnsltlon In the trndltnr was
still held by Northern Paclllc and Hurling-
ton nnu tne constantly recurring strengtn
of these stocks made nn effective support
for the whole market. In tho same degree
their many reactions on profit taking af
fected the speculative tone,
tiurllngton onened under 'nressure nnd
nftor having advanced to a record prlco nt
17H4 closed with a net gain of Jnly ',.
Northern Pacllio also made a new high
record nrlce at 93U, nnd closed with a net
gain of 1. Theru were renewed reports to
day nt a pian to retiro Nortnern l'aciuc
preferred und renorts still ncrslsted of un
agreement for consolidation of Northern
Paclllc and Hurllngtnn. The courso of the
steel stocks upon tho entry of tho United
States Steel Cornnratlnn stocks fwhon Is
sued) Into the untitled department of the
exchango wan a strengthening Inllucnce.
Aitnoug.n mere was a largo selling to rea
lize in these stocks ample support was
forthcoming nnd thu common was run un
somo 2 points over yesterday's price on
tho curb and tho preferred rather moro
than that. Tho stocks of tho constituent
companies wero strong in sympathy", the
common nnd preferred stocks all rising
from 2 to 2. There wero other points of
special strength, such ns Western Union,
Manhattan, the Wheeling & Jtko Erie
stocks showing gains of from 2 to 3i and
Lackawanna, which mounted 9 points to
far above tho highest preceding price. Out.
side of theso Individual stocks there were
few that rose nt any, time much ns a point
over last night and mnny of tho recently
prominent stocks wero constantly held buck
by the pressure of realizing.
Tho rubber stocks reacted widely from
yesterday's advance, tho common losing 2',4
and tho preferred 4',S. In tho last half hour
of tho market, on tho decision of tho New
Jersey court of appeals In favor of the
plaintiffs in tho suit to enjoin tho absorp
tion of the Guggenheim Interests, tho smelt
ing stocks broko violently, .tho common fall
ing to G',4 and tho preferred 5"4 below last
night's level. This helped tho close, which
was also .affected by the large profit taking
sales.
Discussions of the money market out
look continues. In view of ., tho coming
quarterly settlements und the uninter
rupted druln by tho subtrensury. Stcrllhg'
exchange nlso recovered today, renewing
tho apprehension of gold exports. Tho
largo loan expansion of the Hank of Eng
land might under ordlnury circumstances bo
expected to bo repaid after tho quarterly
settlements huvo been met, but tho gov
ernment Is expected to como forward with
nn offer of tho new loan, so that no relax
ation pf tho prcssuro for money Is looked
for In London in tho Immediate future.
Business In bonds continues largo nnd
new points of strength develop from tlmo
to time. Totnl sales, par value, J3,GO3,000.

CATTLE There wns a good, liberal sup
ily or cuttle here today, which naturally
lad 11 tendencv to make buyers 11 little
bearish, as there has been a good run of
cuttle Hero all this week. Tne uemanu.
however, was In ralrly good shape and
there were no rndical changes in prices.
Reeelnts Included about 45 cars of beer
steers nnu tne uclter gruaes soin in jusi
nbout yesterday's notches. Good, heuvy
cattle tor export or good handy weight
cattle were. In the best demand and no
change was noticeable In the prices paid
ror them. Tho commoner kinds, howovor,
did not move as freely und sellers In some
cases naa to tano less money ror tnem
than tho samo kind sold for yesterday.
Tho ract that there wero quite a rew
cattlo on sale cave buyers a chance to
discriminate uguinst the undesirable grades.
There was not lis much mo to the cow
market this morning ns has been the case
the greater part of the week. Uuycrs were
inclined to pound prices a little and In
some cases thev succeeded and In others
they did not. Tho mnrket for that reason
was a trifle uneven und thero wus no gen
eral decline on any kind. Some of the
better grades sold lower, as well as tho
s deslrublo kinds. The market could
perhaps best bu described by calling it
steady to weak in extreme cases.
uuiiH ma not. snow mucn cnango in tne
prices pnld today, but sellers found tho
murket a llttlo dull. Veal calves brought
steady prices.
There were oulto a few .feeders hero to
day, and, although speculators huvo a good
many on nanu, mey unugni up wnni was
offered at nbout steady prices. This has
been a dull week In stock cattle, as the
demand from the country has been very
light und the cattle have been accumulat
ing, but In spite of that fact prices on tho
better grades have held Just about steady.
