personal taxes tor fifteen years had a
hango of heart yesterday when a rurni-
turo wagon bearing the sign "City Treas
urer's Van" paid n visit to all delinquent
axpayors along Sixteenth street between
am tun street and Capitol avenue.
Monday was tho first day of tho house-to-
houe visitation which City Treasurer Han
nings hss Inaugurated for tho colleclloa of
delinquent porsonal taxes. In four hours
more than 12,000 aa collected and
not a single pioco of personal property was
londed on tho van, which stood in tho street
with gaping mouth ready to rocelve tho
goods ut people who failed to liquidate.

A dozen offices In that building were vis
ited and at each door the collectors were
confronted with a roll of bills. The col-
ectlons varied in amount from $70 to ft.

Dentists, doctors and lawyers were called
on here, nnd In every case the delinquent
taxes were forthcoming. Men who had
never paid any personal taxes In Omaha de-

appointment. Merchants, real cstnte and
professional men nllko wero unwilling to
havo any unsavory advertising nnd mndo
haste to rid themselves of the tax collec
tors. In tho ntternoon the van Btarted on Its
work north of Capitol avenuo and worked
o Cuming street. It was Impossible to get
statements mado out for all the delinquents
living along the course traversed" and u

City Treasurer Hcnnlngs Is delighted with
tho success of his new plan. In discussing
It ho said:
'I supposed that we would have a van
loaded with furniture before wo had gono
a block nnd had additional vans In readi
ness so there would bo no delay. People
seem to reallzo that I am In earnest about
this matter and do not propose to allow
taxes to ruu along from year to year.
'Since tho van went out we havo had
fifty Inquiries from taxpayers who live
along the prospective courso and hundreds
of dollars havo been paid In at tho office
besides tho money turned Into the bands
ot tho men who have tho statements. So
far our calls have been mostly upon pro
fessional men who were'ablo to pay their
taxes, but thought It unnecessary. As we
get further nway from the center of the
city the collection of taxes will probably
be more difficult aud It will bo necessary to
levy on goods. ,
"The work will not stop until we have
collected every cent that la coming to, the
city. It Is tlmo that people coma to a
realization of the fact that taxes must bo
paid and I know of no better way of bring
ing tho matter to their attention."

company In East Omaha, which burped
Sunday morning, will bo rebuilt at once.
It Is estimated that the plant will be com
plete! nnd equipped with machinery
within six weeks. Tho loss was entirely
covered by' insurance. As the company has
a large stock ot goods In its warehouse,
n-hlcb escaped the flames, It will be able
to resume operations as soon as the work
ot rebuilding Is finished.
