NEW VOHK, Feb. 4.-The stock market
was tinder the Influence of the news of the
purchase of control of the Southern Pa
cific by n syndicate In the Interests of the
Fnlon Pnclllc. Notwithstanding tho plain
corroboration by the topo on Friday of the
rumors of the "deal" the speculators were
not without doubts nnd the official admis
sion after the market had closed on Fri
day found tho street In a state of unpro
pnrodness, lor while rumors of denlK have
been thick for many weeks past this par
ticular one had not been formulated, etfen
In tho formation of the tipsters.
The natural consequence was n large nnd
excited ilemnnd for stocks nt the opening
louay. as a result or llie accumulation or
buying orders In commission olllcrs since
Inst Friday there were wide openings In
various stocks under the pxrlted bidding
of competing brokers. They bought 12,5oo
shares of Fnlon Pacific upon the fall of
the hammer nt the simultaneous price of
SSMiSO1;. compared with S7 on Friday
night. The opening prlcp In Southern Pa
cific was tho highest, that stock selling at
both 47',4 and 47 on the transfer of x,om
shares, The demand came from London
and tho opening price here wns consider
nbly below the parity of that established In
London thh morning. Opinion In Wnll
street did not conclude that the sale of
tho road Is for the benellt of tho stock
which remains on tho market, ns It consti
tutes it minority of tho road nresumnhlv to
bu used for tho bpst Interests of the Fnlon
Pacllle. The professional sneeulatorH took
an aetlvo part In the market with the nd
vnntngi! offered of the lame outside de
mand for stocks nttrnctcd by tho Southern
I'aciuc iicai.
In their manipulation to ndvnnce prices
one operator made a demonstrative bid for
10.000 shares of Fnlon Pacific nt 90. U wns
quickly supplied In u single block nnd as n
consequence Fnlon Pacific ruled below that
tor tne rest or the day.
Tho completion of the Southern Pacific
transaction caused additional credence to
rumors of other similar transactions. It is
highly probable nlso that the likelihood of
runner 'ran.mctloiis is increased by the
fruition of this plan. The large demand
for Atchison nnd for Hock Island wns at
tracted by this probability. Tin? movement
In these two stocks was, on the whole, the
most conspicuous of the dav. Tho rise In
Atchison reached 2V4 nnd in Hock Island 2
on the very large dealings. The'movement
In Louisville apparently was based on the
fact that it has had no considerable rise
since Its dividend hns been Increased.
The buoyancy of Chlcnao Orent Western
storks gave color to recent rumors that It
Is to pass to tho control of some larger
road. The common stock advanced l'i, tho
preferred 3i4 and the preferred "It" S'i.
Tho rise In tho railroad, which wait very
genernl In sympathy with tho movements,
Invited heavy realizing nnd tho bull specu
lators turned their attention to other qunr
ters of the list to sustnln the market. Tho
most conspicuous part of this operation
was shown In local tractions. Brooklyn
Transit nnd Mnnhnttan rising V each and
Metropolitan 214. Thcro was n period of
activity and strength In tho steel stocks
which lifted them from 1 to ?. Humors
tlint tlirealened conilict In the steel trade
had been averted by agreement helped the
movement. The whole market was In
clined to run off In the late dealings on
realizing nnd llie close wns pasy. Al
though the speculation for the rlso wns
very confident counter considerations wore
not entirely lost sight of. The fact that a
considerable business In slocks predicted
extensive consolidations, tho possibility of
popular disapproval leading In hostile leg
islation, tho prices paid for the roads ab
sorbed nnd the possibility of ilumngo to
roads not included lending to rivalries nnd
renrlsnls wero nil discussed, although they
received small credence. Tho Inroads upon
tho money market snown ny lust weeks
enormous loan expansion, as the result of
nnother heavy llnnnclal operation, gives
somo weight to execution of future develop
ments m tne money mantel. Htcriiug ex
chnngo continued to ndvnnce, notwlth
stnnding nn curlier market In London and
the probability or goici exports tins week.
Tho bond market was strong and slightly
moro nctlvo than on Friday. Total sales.

to conflicting reports concerning the dis

tho crop movement wcro also conflicting.
On tho opening tho mnrkct wns quiet nnd

HOC58 There wns rather n light run of
hogs here today, nnd ns a result the market
whs a big nickel higher. Huyers stnrto.l

they did not meet with much success, nnd
hnd to raise their hands. The most of the
medium weights sold at $5.30. with th
heavyweights at-$5 32. and ns high as $5 35
was paid. Tho light hog? and common
stuff sola from $5,27 down. It was .i
fnlrly active market nt the ndvanco. and
practically everything was sold In good
season. The lust train that arrived though
did not sell quite ns well, thero being
fewer sales at $3.32 than early In tho
morning.
Tho market today wns nt the highest
point reached so far this year, and not
since April of Inst year has the averngo

HOW TO HANDLE THE SNOW

tem uu Objection.
Should the Omnha Street Railway com
pany bo required to rctnovo from tho street
me Hiiow iiiiicn is swept from Its tracks?
This was the main question under discus
sion yestetday morning nt tho meeting of
the Hoard of Public Works which wns enllcd
to discuss the best means of disposing of
tho four Inches of snow which covers tho
Oninhu streets.
City Comptroller John N. Westberg tirgod
that tho f.enns of Bnow which nro thrown
front enr tracks by sweepers block tho
streets unnecessarily nnd that the com
pnny should bo requested to level the piled.
City Kiiglncer Hoscwnter suggested that It
would bo better to require the company to
remove entirely front tho streets the rlilgea
produced by sweepers. The discussion
ended In tho adoption of tho following reso
lution: Resolved. That the utrcct car company Im
requested to level tho ridges of biiow
thrown ftom Its tracks.
AVorU In In Pi'iiarfffs,
Several street cleaning gangs have been
put to work and tho snow Is being hauled
from tho binlness section of the city ns
rapidly as possible. Mr. Westberg objected
to this motliod of disposing of snow nnd
urged that It Is too expensive. Ho sug
gested thnt the snow bo removed only from
the street Intersections nnd that It bo
leveled on tho main streets and allowed to
melt.
Tho comptroller was not supported In this
suggcbllon by tho remulning members ot
the board and no chanso will bo nindc In tho
method of clcurlng the streets. City En
gineer Rosewatcr explained Hint It Im i1:in
gcrous to nllow a heavy snow to remain on
tho chief huslnesu streets. The snow mclu
nnd forms an Icy coating on streets, which
must bo removed nt as great n cost ua that
of hauling away tho snow.
In support of his argument Mr. Rose
water showed tlwt the main Btrcets would
now be covered with cloven Inches of snow
were It scnttcrcd evenly over the uiiHivcpt
portion of tho paving. Property owners
sweep the snow from sidewalks, which have
a width of forty fect on tho business
streets. Tho street car company cleans a
path twenty feet wide. City employes clear
a four-foot path In the gutters. This leaves
only thirty-nix foct of tho street upon which
snow must ho piled. Snow fell to n depth
of four Inches. Limiting tho snow on a
street 100 feet wide to a thirty-six-fool
space would pile It up to nn nvcrago depth
of nbout cloven Inches.
.Mi-rrhiint Complain.
When snow has been nllowed to melt on
tho main streets Mr. Rosewatcr explained
tint merchants havo complained and thero
has been great dissatisfaction. Tho melting
henpu have been transformed Into Ico which
temnlned for weeks on portions of thu
streetH where the direct ray8 of tho sun do
not Btrike.
Mr. Rosewatcr estimates that tho cost of
removing four inches of snow from n block
of 100-foot Rtreot Is about $50. An Inquiry
Into tho methods of handll 111? finow ntiinlnvml
In other cities tho alzo of Omaha shows
mat engineers Invariably recommend that
It bo removed entirely from streets where
thero Is much trafllc.
