Wheat was dull and easy nt the opening
Under the Influence of easy cabled, liberal
receipts and heavy Argentina shipments.
May opened c lower at 7G1-,0761c. with
considerable pressure on the market for
both local nnd outside Interests. Early te
ports of export sales turned the market,
however Shorts became frightened nnd
covered, with the result that May rallied
to "Cic. On the bulge profit-taking became
tho order of business, but the close was
steady. May 'ffo higher at 76c. Seaboard
clearances, cciunl to 67!.OuO bushels In wheat
and Hour, were an Influence In the rally.
Primary receipts aggregated 102.000 bushels,
compared with 323,m) bushels Inst year.
Minneapolis and Duluth reported 3.11 ears,
against 2o3 last week and 311 a year ago.
I-ocal receipts were forty-eight cars, t.nu
of contract grade. Argentine shipments
last week were 720,O bushels, compared
with 168,000 bushels the previous week and

February contracts were 0 bushels.
Corn was iUlet, with the trade moitly
local and without features. Tho openlni;

and moving nml In sympathy with wheat.
The crowd wont short, but later covered
because of the wheat strength, causing a
rally, and tho close was firm, Hecelpts
were 2SG cars. Deliveries on February con
tracts were 330,(kj bushels. May ranged be
tween nMWas'U1 SS'iQ-Wjc and closed
HOlic higher at 39Hc.
Trade In oats was light and the mnrkot
responded neither to tho early weakness
nor the later strength of wheat and corn.
Hecelpts were 206 cars. There were no de
liveries on February contracts. Mny sold
between 25025'8C and 25',c and closed Vlf'ic
higher at 26"-ic.
Provisions were dull. The market opened
firm, In sympathy with n strong hog mar
ket, and advanced early on local buying,
mostly by shorts. More long stuff came
out on tho rise, however, and the market
reacted, closing fairly sfeiulv. May pork

NEW YORK. Feb. 1 nrndstrcet'B Finan

Renewed strength was shown In the stock
market this week In spite of tho fact that
the much talked of and long expected deal
In regard to the St. Paul road proved to
have been more or less of a myth nnd thnt
the action of the Amerlcnn Steel nnd "Wlro

suspending nation as to tho dividends on
tho stocks nnd left the prospect In that
connection a matter of doubt.
Further gold shipments to Paris were

forced the conclusion thnt gold w!l go to

Money, however, hns continued to come
to New York from the Interior nnd Wall

statement and the favorable one which Is
nlso expected tomorrow, apparently con
cludes that money will remnln ensy and
