CHICAGO, Jan. 18.-Llqtildatlon by largo
find small holders was the feature of to
day's wheat market. The May prlco de
clined '&f)ie. under the pounding It re
ceived. Hnnll receipts and light country
acceptances helped corn, that market clos
ing VAftVic hlKlier. Oats declined Uc. Pro
visions showed 2',4c advance In all meats
at the clone.
For a fow minutes following tho open
InK In wheat It appeared that the end of
tho recent heavy liquidation was In sight.
An advanco at Liverpool following yester
day's decline hero encouraged buying at
tho opening and restricted selling, the re
sult being nn Initial advance of ViWiC
May starting nt 70145T75VC. The prlco
touched 75V("5Ho nml "'most Immediately
there waH a good demand. Wheat began to
come out nt onoo and It was evident from
tho character of tho liquidation that hold
ers had no faith In the stability of tho
market. The (In rn pi n tr of Important lone
lines brought small traders Into the mar
ket with their offerings. In less than an
hour tho .May nrlcn had receded to 74c. or
ir below tho lowest point reached durlnK
yesterday's slump. During tho dccllno thero
wero strong evidences of Wall street un
loading, which had anything but a quieting
lnfluenco on long. At 74Uc tho market was
f;lven support. The local crowd evidently
iclleved that a rally was duo and for u
tlmo bought confidently, their efforts send
ing tho price back to "ISiC, and though
thero wero frequent periods of liquidation
during the latter part of tho session, yet In
tho main the market exhibited n fair degree
of steadiness. Influential traders, however,
apparently had llttln faith In the market.
Thn feeling was rather easy nt tho close,
with May at HWHo bid. Northwestern
receipts wero 250 cars, agnlnst 471 last week
und 327 a year ngo, Chicago receipts wero
44 cars. 10 of contract grade. Total primary
receipts wero 432,000 bu. Hcaboard clear
ances of what nnd Hour aggregated 393,(io0
bu. The seaboard reported 40 loads taken
for export. Argentina shipments wero re
ported at ftis.ono bu., this small amount
being a factor In tho opening strength.
Corn was Irregular. Tho market was nc
tlvo and higher early, with buyers In a de
cided majority, Influenced by light receipts
nnd small acceptances by tho country. In
fluential traders wero heavy purchasers
and a material advancn was scored before
the lnfluenco of the wheat weakness was
felt l.oto In tho session an ensler feeling
developed, with tho local crowd sellers.
May opened UfWo higher nt KX&B.lSTic, ad
vnnced to XtHc and declined to IS'te. Tho
close was nt SSc. Ilccelpts were .15(5 cars.
The market for oats wan dull nnd utmost
without Independent features, Htrcngth
was shown early In sympathy with corn,
but tho market quickly followed when corn
started downward. Trading was almost en
tirely local. Receipts wero 170 cars. Mny
opened a shade higher at 25Vifi25',ic and
sold between 23;c find 25G2SVic wild closed
fcc lower nt 25Hc.
Thero was a firm undertono to provisions,
although prices chnnged Immaterially.
Light hog receipts nnd higher yard prices
encouraged somo outside buying, enough
to keep prices a llttlo above yesterdny's
'lostng figure. Thero was somo profit tak
ing by locnl holders. At the closo May
pork wns 214o higher at $ 1 1 . 1 7 c, : May lard,
2l4o higher at $7.50, and Muy ribs, 2!c
lilgher at J7.1714.

HOOS Thero wuh about an average sup.
,,lv nf lines here today, and. thn ilem.m.t
being of liberal proportions and other mar
kets In good shape, trade started out 7'.4ff
ldc higher. The bulk of tho sales went from
$5.27''j to $5.32ij. with the long string ut
J5.30, and ns high ns $5.35 was paid. Sonio
light Etuff Hold. an low as 15.25. It was 11
fairly nctlve market and It was not long
beforo the bulk of the hogs had changed
hands. After tho more urgent orders hud
been filled thi mnrket did not seem to lie
qulto as nctlvo und for a time not very
much wan doing. As tho morning udvaneed
tho market became worse and for tho last
few loads buyers would not pay over $5.23
and $5.27',4 und the hogs had to lie choice to
bring $5.2714. For light stuff buyers were
bidding $5.20 and less. Sellers were not
willing to take those prices and up until
noon several loads wore still unsold.
As will bo seen from the tnhle of nverage
prices tho market Is now at the high point
of the month und not since April 30 of lust
yenr have prices been ns high ns they were
touay. liopresrntntive sales.

for $1,574 and $1.90. which Is tho best nrlce

were no lambs offered today, so there wns
nothing with which to test the mnrket.
