8 TJTTC OMAHA DAILY TVE13: TUESDAY, J A "N 17 Alt Y 1, 1001, SOUTH OMAHA STOCK RECORD flrfttiffing Growth in Volume of Etuinesi for tho Year. ONLY SECOND LARGEST SHEEP MARKET OTrr Jtllr Million Dollnm Worth of Mir Htork Handled nt the Htnrk Variln DnrlnK . I lie 'Vrnr 10(10. During tho year 1900 the growth of the live stock Industry at South Omaha, which has been ono of the marvels of the com mercial world, has continued, and while thn gains havo not been so marked as dur ing somo years In the past, they have been sufficiently bo to glvo entire satisfac tion to the friends of that market. A short corn crop in somo sections of tributary territory has caused fewer cattle to be fed, and consequently there has been a slight decrraso In tho receipts during the year as compared with tho previous year. Tho same cause, together with tho preva lence of cholera, has prevented any gain In hog rccolpts. It must bo taken Into ac count, however, that the receipts of both cattlo and hogs wcro large during 1899, and It woh hardly to be expected that tho record for that year could bo surpassed by 1900. Tho growth of tho year has been con fined to tho sheep nnd horse business. South Omaha has coino to tho front as n sheep market with leaps nnd bounds that havo nstonlshcd all competitors. During tho year South Omaha has handled more sheep than any other two markets com bined, with tho single exception of Chi cago, and during somo single mouths South Omaha received moro sheep than Knnsas City, St. Joseph and St. Louis combined. In other words, South Omaha ranks next to Chicago as a sheep ninrket, nnd thoso best Informed ns to tho course of tho business freely admit that from now on tho con test will bo for first piUco between South Omaha nnd Chicago, nil other markets being hopelessly distanced, Tho horse market at South Omaha Ib also coming to tho front with about tho same rapidity ait tho sheep market. Tho old markets still havo u good shnro of the native horse bubiness, but during the past season South Omaha captured the rango business, receiving and selling moro of that kind than any other market. Tho natlvo horso business Is also growing, and the prospects are most fnvorablo for South Omahn becoming tho lending horse market of tho country. Words cannot convey nn adequate Idea of tho business transacted nt a live stock market, and figures alono can tell tho story In Its true light. Tor that reason the tables of figures aro presented below, and s. study of them will bring out many most Interesting facts..
