S. D. Rose, a young man employed by the
Barber Asphalt company, was held up and
robbed 'of $26 Sunday night near the guard
house at old Fort Omaha, Thirtieth and Fort
streets. The Job was done by two men, ono
of vtbom, the shorter of the two, was
masked. Tho latter displayed a pistol,
pointing It at Roso and threatening to choot
lt ha made nny outcry or resistance. The
taller ot tho footpads acted as spokesman.
Roto was on bis way to the city from
Florence, where bo had been escorting'
young woman to her home. He was afoot-
It was about 11 o'clock when, approaching
the site ot tbo old fort, two men stepped

up his hands. As Rose was unarmed ha

City Comptroller Westberg was credited
In a local paper with making the state
ment that the pay roll for October has not
been submitted to him and that It may
contain the names of a large number ot
men who were employed by the city admin
istration fnr the purpose of advancing the
Interests of the republlcaa party. Mr.
Westberg denies having made any such
statement. The pay roll had cot been sub
mitted to him because the secretary of the
Board of Public Works was not able to
complete it until yesterday.
The records arc open for the Inspection
ot the public In tho ofllce of Secretary Co
burn and show that the average number
of men employed In street cleaning during
the month of October was fifty. In the
street department the total number of men
employed during the month was 120. This
includes all foremen and teamsters. Many
ot these men were employed for only
few days.
