In the year of 1770 Bengal was visited ny a
famine, tho records of which for the horror
of tho situation eclipse any similar narrative
to he found In tho pucea of history. The
crop of 1769 being a total failure within nine,
months. It Is computed thnt out of a popu
lation of 30.000.000. one-third, or 10,000,000.
perished from starvation and disease. In or
der to obtain food, parents sold their chil
dren Into slavery until no buyers could bo
found; for a tlmo thousands nubslsted upon
leaves of trees nnd grass until even that
sourco ot nourishment falling, tho living
actually fed upon the bodies of tho ded.

It Is recorded thnt while the rainy season
of 1770 brought 1111 abundant harvest, In the
meantime millions of starving wretches

dying In multitudes through Inability to live

Tho effects of this famine oro felt for
two gcncratlonH. Tho children and youn5
people having nlmost all succumbed, there

been nourishing farms nnd villages, and
tigers and elephants multiplied to such an
enormous extent that their terror stricken,
defenseless population lay at tho complete
mercy of savago beasts.
In 1S37 tho Northwest provinces were rav
aged by a famine of which It Is recorded that

Bengal was again vlilted by a terrible
famine In 1S73, when 3,900,000 people re
ceived dally relief nt a cost to tho govern
ment of $32,600,000, and to private charity

opening up of tho country by roads and rail
ways, ns well no tho heroic relief efforts,
wero succcffiful In holding tho grim scourge
at bay, so that hut few actually perished.
From 1876-1878, however, the provinces of
Bombay, Madras nnd Mysoro wero swept by
fnmlne ami pestilence that nlmost equalled
tho disaster of a century before.
At a cost to the government of $33,000,000,
1.600,000 people were temporarily relieved;
but that this sufficed little Is demonstrated
by tho fact thnt lu ono district of 2,129.000
