are to the effect that every water hole and
meet of the well, have gone dry. In con
sequence cattle are dying by the thousands
and their shrunken frames dot the desert
country of Pima. Plnnl, Santa Cruz. Y'umn,
Corhlsi' and parts of Maricopa counties.
The loss to owners of herds cannot be com
puted, ns in their present gaunt condition
no market enn be found. Rarely In the
history of the territory han the water In
tho Olla and Salt rivers been so scarce.
Not a drop In reported In the Olla nnd
there Is none In the San Pedro trom Benson
to its confluence with the- Salt river above
Phoenix.
At Casa Grande th Immcnso reservoir
Is dry, tho supply having long since been
exhausted. Crops of alfalfa, barley and
wheat between Florenco and Casa Grande,
as well as on the Indian reservation at
Sacton, where the Plnias dwell, aro beyond
hope. Added to all this Is tho destruction
of timber by the forcot Urea which continue
to rage In the Santa Catallna mountains.

Washington Buys: Permission to widen the
Chicago river nnd introduce necessary
changes to modify the current caused by
the flow through tho drainage canul Is
granted the sanitary hoard In u communi
cation which has Just been forwarded by
Secretary Root of the War department.
The permission carries a provision absolv
ing the government from nil expense, but
reserves tho right of the secretary of war
to reguluto the discharge through Lock
port, or to take whatever steps nre needed
to prevent damage to navigation and prop
erty Interests. The aunltary district is
likewise held responsible for all damages
by reason of tho tncrcused flow through
tho Chicago river.
