The special committee of the Commer
cial club having In charge the matter of
charter revision li working away aad more
than likely aa Interesting report will be
made when the club meets again. It Is
stated that considerable depends upon the
result of the census aad the returns from
WashtBston will be watched with Interest.
But no ma 'ter what the cestui shows a
reclassification of the city Is desired. In
stead of adopting the Lincoln charter
Those who bare looked over the Lincoln
charter say that It contains taany pro
visions which are entirely unsuited to
South Omaha. An entirely new charter Is
to he drafted for tho purpose of submitting
it to the legltlature at the session next
winter. Among the changes suggested will
be an Increase in the compensation of city
oScials. At present the mayor receives
a salary of only l'W a ear. as does the city
treasurer. The clerk gets I1.0C0 a year and
so does the city engineer. The attorney Is
paid U.Wi per annum. It Is considered
only Just and right to pay both the mayor
aad treasurer salaries commensurate with
the respoBMbllity of their positions. The
clerk Is to be Increased JJOO a year and
provision nay be made for a salary for the
deputy treasurer

An ordinance now before the city coun
cil provides for the vacating of the stub
ends of certain streets In the northern
part of the city and of Railroad avenue,
from I to F streets. This ordinance has
been Introduced at the instance of the
Union Pacific Railroad company and la
la line with the Improvements contem
plated here. There seems to t no objec
tion, as far as can be learned, regarding
the vacating of the stub ends of the streets,
but It li asserted that the closing of Rail
road avenue will result in a material loss
to the city. Members of the Commercial
club say that this loss to the city at large,
should be compensated for by concessions
from the railroad company, the nature of
these concessions to be determined by a con
ference between city officials and the of
ficers of the railroad company
Cltliens generally greatly desire that
South Twenty-fourth street be placed in
a passable condition and If there Is a con
ference as suggested It Is more than likely
that the request will be made that the
Union Pacific macadaralte this roadway.
This street Is the main artery leading Into
the city from the south and the travel upon
It Is heavy at all times of the year. During
et weather the street is almost Impassa
ble and In dry times It ts full of hills and
hollows. There Is no use trying to secure
a petition for tho paving of the street, as
the Union Pacific owns the property on
the west side from Wyman street to tho
county line and therefore the necessary
two-thirds of the foot frontage cannot bo
obtained. Some individuals Incline to tho
opinion that it the railroad company will
pay two-thirds of the cost of either pav
ing or macadamizing this street the prop
erty owners on the east side will be will'
Ing to pay the balance.
The desire seems to be to secure some
benefits for concessions granted Apprais
ers are to be appointed when the time

posilbly prevent the opening of N street
to the river, aa contemplated. The owner
of a certain piece of property Is tn Cali
fornia and It has so far been Impossible
to securo a satisfactory reply to letter
sent. There ! some hope that the matter
may be adjusted In time to arrange the de
tails this summer.
In the meantime, prorerty owners on JI
street are working away at a petition and
hope to soon secure enough signers to pre
sent the document to the council. Should
Jl street be graded it will also be paved
and then there will be a first-class road
from the heart of the city to the river
While the expense will be heavy, tt Is ex
pected that the benefit to the abutting
property will more than compensate for tha
coit of the Improvement.

Yards company, were held at Brewer's un
