In Point of MiiKiinll
NEW YORK, June IB. -To lind a iaralle
to today's stagnation In the stock market
It would be necessary to go back to the
period of the last presidential campaign.
A unmoor of usually active stocks were
not dealt In to the extent of a single
share, and It was long afternoon before
such speculative leaders as Hrooklyn Trail
sit or Manhattan made Its appearance on
the tape nt all. There was some desultory
speculation In Sugar during the morning
at mi nil vance of about a point, but that
stock fell back Into the rut of dullness
which characterized the whole market.
Large offerings of Northern Paclllc began
to appear near 2 o'clock, nt which lime
tho directors wero nsseinblli'- to take
action on the- eml-annual d'vldctid.
The stock fell Into quietude In the last
hour nnd hung about a pulnt below last
night's level. It was not until after the
close of the market that the (iiinounee
incut wns made that only a 1 per cent
dividend had been ibelared for lh six
months' period. The proposed notion of
the directors seems to have been 1 out n
close secret, so that no estimate can be
formed of the effect of this action on the
stock market. At the last dividend ;icrloJ
the directors ileielareil 2 per cent on the
common stock, 1 per cent of which was
called regular semi-annual and I per cent
extra. Several weeks ago th" stock was
l ushed up above itt by u spooulittlvo p oI
on the allegation that u regular setnl-un-mini
dividend of 2 per cent would be de
clared for the last six months. More re.
eently rumors huve been abroad that the
directors would hesitate to put the slock
on a regular I tier cent basis, but It has
been generally accepted In specu
lative circles that the last dividend uctlon
would lie repeated, that Is to say, u 2
per cent dividend declared, but 1 tier cent
to be called extra. No Intimation has been
heard In Wall street that the actual
nmount to be disbursed would be cut In
half.
Tho action tnken proved u surprise and
what the elTect may ! upon the general
market It Is Impossible to foresee. It Is
a clear announcement of the formulated
Judgment of the directors, heretofore III
formally announced by ofllcluls of the com
pany, that the current high level of earn
ings cannot be maintained.
It will be accepted also ns confirmation
of tho reports of extensive damage to tho
northwestern wheat crop. The price move
ment In today's market was Irregular and
without slgulllcnnce. Not much nttentlon
was paid to the forecast of tomorrow's
hank statement, but It Is expected that u
lo.ss of cash by the banks will be dis
closed, owing to the $3,500,000 export of
gold, which seems to have been only partly
offset by tho receipt of cash from the In
terior. New York exchange at Chicago,
however, has moved upward during tho
week and today touched 20c premium.
According to tho statements from the
leading bnnks, the net Joss In cash will
probably bo upward of $1,000,000.
Tho bond market shared fully In the dull
ness of the stock market and price changes
wore tuslgnlllcaut. Total sales, par value,
$SOO,000. United States bonds were un
changed In bid quotations.
Tho Commercial Advertiser's London
financial cablegram says: Business wns nt
tho lowest possible ebb In tho markets
hero today and dull In tone. Afrlcnns
llnnlly hardened the markets. Americans
hesitated and were stagnant throughout
the session, puzzled by New York's con
tradictory movements

CAT TLB Today's market was devoid of
nny marked changes In any direction or on
any kind of cattle. The receipts were
moderate and there wns n fnlr demand on
tho part of both packers nnd shippers, but
at the same time the market was not
particularly active or lively. It was nctlve
enough, however, to effect a reasonably
early clearance, everything of any account
being sold and weighed up long before mid
day. Cornfed steers of good quality sold nt
fully steady prices nnd the demnnd ap
peared to be the best for that kind ot
cattle. On tl.e other hand the commoner
kinds wero steady to weak.
Cows nnd heifers were In very light
supply. In fact that has been the case for
so many days now that It seems hardly
necessary to repeat It every day. At the fame
tlmo there was the usual good demand for
the good kinds. Holders of common stuff
complained that It did not sell any too
freely, but it all sold ln the end. Fat bulls
wero selling at Just about steady prices.
Thero Is some little demand for iood
stocker and feeder bulls and prices do not
show much change from day to day.
There were not enough Btockers or feed-
ers in the yards to make any renl test
of the mnrket. In consequence thero Is
nothing of Importance to say regarding the
mnrket, which could be called nominally
stendy.

HOOS Moderate receipts nnd a good de
mand, together with more favorable advlce.4
from eastern markets, caused tho mnrket
hero to open 11 llttlo stronger. Tho sales
wero largely at $4.&7mt4.9o. but alt the
packers wero not buyers nnd some of them
bcemcd to feel that there was 110 occasion
for advancing the market. For that reason
the trade wns not particularly nctlV'. but
still tho hogs kept selling and even thing
wns cleaned up In good season Later nl
vices from Chicago Indicated that the mar
ket there was closing 11 little easier, but It
closed here as good ns any time, the mar
ket averaging n shade higher than yeter-
The Improvement In the miirket today
brought the average of tho market up to
tho highest point touched since Tiusdiy
when the hogs all sold a little belter than
$l.9i). Tho market Is now Just ubinil l..r
