opening of the market disclosed a mood of
depression over the disappointing effect or
the war news on foreign markets. London
sold about n.s many stocks In this market
as were bought for that account yesterday
and dragged prices below last night's level.
rno steel stocks, arter rrntionni advances,
turned heavy on the news of the closing
down of additional mills nnd offered no sup
port to tno market ror tne rest or tne tiny.
Sugar hung below last night's prices all
day. In fact, the strength In the Tobacco
stocks was tho only notable element of
strongth In tho Industrial departments. A
number of reports for April showed gnlns
In the gross earnings more than wiped out
by Increased operating expenses. Hut theso
reports were ignored and caused no rneoK
to tho unward tendency In the railroad list.
This found Its Inception In the granger
group ana spread to onion oncinc. tno
Atrhlsons and Missouri Paclllc. It was at
tributed to the favorablo crop weather
prestige In tho west Later In the dn tho
tVunk lines came Into prominence, led by
the llaltlmore & Ohio, the common rising 4
points and tho preferred 24, and Pennsyl
vania, Reading first prererred and I-ackn-wanna
rose from 2'.4 to 2l4. The decline In
tho movement of currency from the Interior
for the week was counted 11s an encourag
ing factor. The net receipts by the banks
from that source nre estimated nt about
$2,01X1,000. compared with over $3,000,000 last
week. It Is hoped that this will prove the
turning point townrd a revival of trade ac
tivity in tho Interior. Tho mnrket closed
actlvo nnd strong nt the best.
There was a good absorption of railroad
bondR at advnnclng prices. Total sales, par
value, $1,495,000. Pnlted States refunding 2s.
when Issued, declined and old 4s advanced
U In the bid price.
The Commercial Advertiser's London
financial cablegram says: Tho markets
wero very quiet today before Whitsuntide.
They were, however, llrm, though feature
less. The public Is still apparently waiting
for ofllclal news of the fall of prices. Im
don was Inclined to realize In Americans,
but New York equalized this tendency.
Tlntos wero Hat on Paris sales on the fort
nightly statistics. Stocks Increased 2,035

CATTLE ReeMpti today looked small as
compared with the big run of the first half
of the weak, but It was probably th best
thing for the market, as It cave It a
breathing spell and an opportunity to re
cover. The demand on the part of local
packers seemed to be good and the general
market was Jnst abaut steady with yester
day, or, lay 20c lawer than lait week on
heavy cattle and about lie lower on the
light cattle.
Cows and heifers sold In Just about the
same notehes as yesterday, thero being no
notloeablfi change tn the matter of prices.
The demand was good and the market rea
sonably active, so that the offAtingn
changed hands in good eeason. Bulls were,
also steady with yesterday.
Only a few stoekers and feeders were,
offered for sale nnd the market was without
now feature. Prlcos, while lower than last
week, were Just about steady with yestcr
dny. This market on all kinds of killing cattle
was In exceedingly good shnpe as compnred
with other markets. Yesterday there was a
good deal snld ubout the market because
of Its lateness, buyars hanging trick, but
when the market did open It wan very
active and the cattle were all sold In fair
season at prices that would comparo most
favorably with every other mnrkct. In
fact there Is no other mnrket in the country
nny better than this market, and, with the
exception of yesterday, the trade has been
actlvo on practically every day for the past
month or more. Representative sales:
