NEW YORK. May 22.-Sugar certificate.,
occupied the attention of the Stock ex
change today to the praetlcnl exclusion of
other considerations. The apathy and las.
sltndo of the market seemed to spur the
professional traders to a search for pome
medium of operation and they gave them,
selves up to u speculative revel In Sugar,
rim movement of the slock was hl!?hly
charncterlstlc. That Is to say, the fltictua
Hons were frequent, violent and erratic
nnd there was no news to account for them
beyond the airiest and ino.st unsubstantial
rumors. Also It was evident that the enor
mous business being done would necessi
tate very little clerical labor on the trans
fer books of the company. Probably tho
large majority of the contracts made, cither
ror sale or for purchase, were closed out
before .the end of tho day. the nrollt or
los being a.-ccptcd by the traders.
I he stock's extreme range was 77, points
nnd the net gain was 4N,. In the opening
dealings tho price went down. In continua
tion of yesterday's depression. After de
clining 1 the advance began nnd It had
not proceeded fnr before the shorts began
to manifest distress nnd rushed to cocr,
pushing the price up to the maximum.
The squeeze was not relaxed until the de
mand from tho shorts was prettv well satis
lied. The- price then began to fall back
on light transactions and without any evi
dence of support. The bears became warv
after their punishment and refrained from
aggressive selling. In snlte of the an
nouncements made on otllelal authority Just
nerofo the close that the sugar Hade war
bnd not been settled and was not likely
to be. The leading Industrials showed sym
pathy with Sugar, especially American To
bacco, which Is nearest kin to It In speou
Inttve character. The latter stock showed
better resistance, to reaction than other
spec altlcs. whlrh generally Inst prettv
much all their gains. The general llt con
tinued In u slough of despond and moved
either way with great difficulty. Opening
prices were lower. In sympathy with l-on-don,
and there was a midday rally, when
Sugar flhnt upwnrd nnd Chicago North
western was mnrked up 64. The latter
movement was without explanation, be
yonil tho largo Increase In earnings for
April, which was reported vesterday.
Northern Pacific was tomparatlvolv firm
on a good statement for the second week
In Mn: Raltln-ore & Ohio was well sup
ported on small dealings.
For the rest the trading wns listless and
ndlfferent. with no evidence of outside
Interest. The speculative npathv nnd de
pression were common to nil the great
securities markets of the world and even
the speculative markets for foodstuffs and
commodities showed a declining tendency.
Sterling exchange here whs decMcdiy
easier, but It Is considered net Impossible
that some gold may be engaged fnr Palls

The bond market became dull nnd Ir
regular again today. Total snles, par valun,

Issued, declined i-,. the 5s and old 4s a,

The Commcrclnl Advertiser's London

were extremely quiet today, with nn In

voted by members to the discussion or
politics. The only unfavorable vle-s ac
cepted were the probable French minis
terial crisis over Frances dllllcultles In
Morocco and Rus'la's In Corea. The news
thp.t loril Roberts had reached the Vaal

CAT! LE There wns a fnlr run of cattle
today, 119 cars being reported In sight,
vh'ch was the same ns received n week
ago. The market as a. whole was In good
condition, though the trade was not par
tlcularly nctlve. It was active enough,
however, to effect nn early clearance.
Handy weight cattle were In good demand
and sold readily at steady prices, and In
somo cases a llttlo stronger, If buyers hap
pened to take a notion to them. Holdes
of bli heavy cattle In some cases did not
think that they got as well as yesterday.
While, ns noted above, the market was
not very active, practically everything
changed hands In goon season. The trnde
ns a whole was very satisfactory to sellera
nnd the prices paid high as compared with
other market points.
Cows and heifer., wer In good demand and
tho market leasonably active at steady
Ptlccs. Olivers were not long In picking
nn everything deslrnble. Hulls sold in
about the same notches as yesterday.
Stockers and feeders were not In such
large supply ns yesterday. The demnnd
for warmed-up cattle did not appear to be
very good, but stock cattle were Just about
stendy at the decline noted. Little stock
heifers sold nt prices that were 25c lower
than last week. Representative sales:

SHEEP There wns n nrellv decent run
today so far ns numbers were concerned,
but the receipts were made up very Inrgely
of undesirable stuff. At least buyers seemed
to think so. and they did not appear to be
5'ery anxious to secure any very large
proportion of the offerings. The result wns
thnt the market was slow nnd the feeling
very weak.
