Corn opened firm, fractionally over Sat

cc 'intry offerings small. There was a fair,
though rather scattered demand and no
rtleular selling pressure. There was some

liquidation of .May, with purchases of July
In exchange at lHOHic difference. During
the session a spurt of liberal offerings from
nn Influential trader caused a dip, but
this was recovered, helped by the visible
decrease, of 2,190,000 bit. Local receipts were

The trade In wheat was quiet and con

relatively weaker than July, tho latter
rinsing with an appearance, of steadiness.
Traders generally were Inclined to play

which contributed much to tho quietude,
of tho session. Cables were weak and the

NEW YORK, April 30. -The day on the
stock market started off with another at
I tempt to rush up prices by speculative
manipulation with the purpose' of attract
; Ing an outside following, but the- ghost
j Interest had been so far eliminated by the
events of the latter part of hiHt weel: that
thero was not sulllclent demand from that
, source to keep up prices. Neither was
1 thero nny nwakeued Interest developed
j through thu commission houses. The mar
! ket, therefore, fell back and becnm! dull
and heavy, but without positive weakness
, untill some of the later developments,
when the bears showed renewed vigor mid
sold prices to tho lowest of the day.
i no violent lireak in sugar was ttie
principal element In the docllno. That
stock sold up to 121ii In the early denllligs
nnd recovered to thnt llgure utter n re
action nnd then fell away with occasional
spasmodic rallies to Ul'i, closing only
slightly above thnt. Tho news bearing on
the stock consisted of n story from Bo'ton
giving clnborato details of alleged terms
of settlement of the trade war and tho
expressed opinion of a prominent specu
lator Just before sailing for Europe that
tho war was settled. Several of tho
principals In the trado conflict denied the
allegations during tho day.
Tho threatened strike on the New York
Central caused a fall of 214 points In that
stock and had a sympathetic effect else
whero In tho list, Missouri Pacific was
pushed up to 60 on rumors that a, dlvldond
would bq declared nt today's meeting of
directors and that John D. Rockefeller
would bo admitted to tho directory. Both
rumors failed to bo confirmed by tho event
and tho stock fell back, but saved a small
net gain.
Tho steel Industrials, nftcr some show of
wenkness, also becama llrm and closed
generally with n small net gnln. Tho only
developments bearing on tho group wero
rumors rt'ardlng tho threatened legal
process ngnlnst officials of the Steel and
Wlro company. United States Leather
made n considerable show of strength.
Otherwise tho market genernlly yielded to
the reactionary tendency and closed very
near tho lowest and easy In tone. Thero
wero no developments of Importance In
thb money or exchange market, though
both were scanned with eager Interest.
Discounts in Loudon and sterling ex
chango here wero slightly easier, but Lou
don has to prepare for a 10 per cent In
stallment of the government loan, which
will bo taken up this week. Tho tighten
ing of the London money market nnd the
demand for exchango In Now York to
pay the Installment of American aubscrlp
Hon will both tend townrtl gold exports.
Tho money market here continues easy
nnd shows no sign of hardening, notwithstanding-
tho diminished supply of cash for
tho market on subtreasury operations, It
Is worthy of remark In this connection that
Saturday's treasury statement at Wash
ington showed an excess of receipts over
expenditures for the day of 331.321.6S1. thus
materially raising tho figure of tho month's
surplus,
Railroad bonds were weak in sympathy
with stocks, but tho dealings were rather
light. Total salos, par value, $1,470,000.
United States 2s nlvancel ti and new
4s declined ti In tho bid price. '
Commercial Advertiser's Loudon financial
cable: Tho markets hero today were
dull, ostensibly on dear money, but really
because of the persistent pressure, realizing
sales and tho general disinclination to
buy. Funds relapsed fractionally. Ameri
cans opened slightly above parltv. but
thero was absolute stagnation In them
until 3 o'clock, when n futile nttempt was
nindo to Improve prices. New York camo
heavy und sngged till tho closo. Tlntos
fell 7-16 In connection with the Paris set
tlement and on sales. Call inonei- wns In
good demand, heavy Installments of West,
rallun copper loans falling duo. Bills were
steady, but had a slightly easier tendency.
The bank renewed small sums hero und
did n good business In discounts.
The following nro tho closing prices on
tho New York Stock exchange today:
oral fund, exclusive of the $150,000,000 gold

picked up the few loads to bo had at good,
