CONDITION OF OMAHA'S TRADE TUttering .Outlook for th 8eaon't Crop Hu a Good Influsnca. COUNIRY RETAILERS ARE VtRY BUSY Slocks IlcltiK Broken Rapidly 31 not 11 r I ii uc IIIk Hun of Duplicate Or-ilcru-Values Generally .Show ' Vrr' Little Chnnge, Tho condition of trade In this lurnllty In very nuirh the mrao ns It wns 11 weok ngo. Tho demand from nil sources Is still un usually hcaVy fJt oven this season of tho year nnd all Indications seem to point to a continued heavy consumption of goods dandled by locul merehunts. The favorable outlook tip to this time for large crops Is havlnxr ii (food Influence on trade, ns It tends to Increase tho confidence In futuro business and makes retailors place more liberal nrlt-r for fall goods ns wtll as for surnmnr Mock. According to all reports received from tho country retailers nro doing an Imincrtso business and stocks nro being rapidly' broken up, so Jobbers nro looking for m big rim of duplicate orders and expect them to start In earlier tNm usual. In recant to market conditions (hero Is very little to be mild, as practically all lines aro In Just nbotit the name position they were In n week ngo. As n general thing there is a feeling of firmness all along the line and no very startling' chunges nro looked for In tho near future. In n retail way local trade last week was, entirely satisfactory. There: was perhaps not nnlle no much of a rush ns was ex pected Just previous to Kaster, but nt the naino tlmo there wus a Rood, steady run of tiuslness, which was fully up to expecta tions. Coffee Mnrkrt Kiclfcd. Tho only Important feature to the whole sale grocery market last week was tho excited condition of tho coffee market. Tho early part of the week prices ndvanced U and later on cased off uguin, ho that the week closed With quotations nbollt where they were at the beginning. Those who are In a position to know, however, xny that the murket Is bound to advance, ns the visible upply Is constantly .decreas ing, whllo consumption Is on the Increase. Acting on this theory' local Jobbers urn buying freely for futuro wants and Intend to carry nil tho stock they can handle. There Is nothing new to bo said about tho xiigar market, as It Is practically In the same position It was in n week ago. Tanned fruits are also unchanged. Dried fruits urn quoted the same, but at the same time thero Is nn unusually heavy demand for this season of tho year. No advance, how ever, Is looked for nt this time, Practically fill other lines remain unchanged and In dications seem favorable for a steady mar ket for some little tlmo to come. .No Decline In llnriluitrc. Thrro has been considerable talk during tho past week about tho weakness In the hardware market and especially In the Iron find steel market. When Interviewed on the subject local Jobbers expressed tho nxdnlou that It was merely a Hoard of 'I'r.ido manipulation, tho object being to temporarily depress tho value of certain stock. Manufactured articles are not one cent cheaper than they were before this mticlt-talked-of decline took plnce ami local lobbers say they do not flee how It Is posslblo for nny decline to tnke plnce In the near future. What Is apt to occur, however, Is the doing away with tho ex orbitant prices that have been paid In tho imst for certain lines because of their pcnrclty. .Manufacturers nro better nblo to supply the market thnn they were a few innnthA ago and consequently a bonus will not have to b paid In order to set iwods delivered. The doing nwny with this bonus, however, does not menn thnt thero is n. decline In the market, but rather that liuslness Is getting down to a firmer nnd better basis, ioc.il Jobbers hnvo Just as iquch confidence In the market as ever and do not look for any reduction In values, but instead predict a good, steady, active mar ket. There Is not much to bo said regarding Jocnl trado conditions, as everything Is moving along nt Just about tho same rate It has been going for some time past. Job bers Report an exceptionally heavy move ment of stock nnd llgure that ns long as crop prospects nro good there, will bo no letting up In the volumo of trade. Dry floods Move Freely. r Dry goods Jobbers nro also cnjiivlns a nlcu run of business, Hetnllers of course nro pretty well supplied Just nt present with spring and summer goods, but nt tho same time orders nro coming In rapidly. On account of the. good demand In tho country Jobbers are looking for a big run of duplicate orders and expect thnt In this respect, us well'ns In all others, this year's liuslness will break all previous records. Kali business Is also coming In at a sur prising rate nnd Jobbers say they have more orders now thnn they ever had before t this season of the year. Thu market .remains practically unchanged, although prices are good and linn and many lines nro still scarce. There seems to be no fear nt any weakness developing In tho near future, so both Jobbers nnd retailers lire liberal buyers for futuro wants. I'll It IliiNlness Sutlxfiicdiry. Hoot and shoo men also have fnvorable reports to mako regnrdlng the condition of trade. Traveling men have, now been out long enough with full lines to tell some thing about the shape retailers are In nnd no far hnvo found them more willing to ldnco orders for fall goods than ever lm forn at this season of the year. That Is perhaps due In part to the favorablo way In which spring trade has started nut, but Jt Is also true that all Indications seem to iiolnt to n heavier demand next fall than nt the present time. Itubber goods are nlso selling well, more orders having been received so far than had come In up to tho corresponding tlmo In May of last year. It should be remembered In this connection, however, that, prices were not received last year until May 1. The hldo market Is quoted the same as It was n week ago, but at the s.imo tlmo prices nre very firm nnd a slight ndvnnco would not be n great surprise. Kri.lt mill Produce. Thero was n very good demand last week for all fresn fruits ami veueiomes. tho warmer tho weather the greater tho de mand for such lines nnd up to tho present time tho supply hns been none too large. Heavy ruins In tho south lust veek did much to cut down receipts, especially of straw berries, for not only did It rnlu In tho utr.iwberry section, but also caused wnsh outH on the railroads, which prevented shipping much of tho stock thnt was ready to come. Kor that reason the quality of tho berries received last week was not extra good nnd the prices higher a good shore of the week. Kor the next two weeks the supply of berries will como mostly from Texas, Ixmlslunu and Mississippi. About Slay 1, however, Arkansas, berries will begin to come. It is thought that during this week twenty-four-quart cases will range from $1.50 to $5, depending on receipts, nnd twenty-four-plnt cases from $2 to $3.50. As anticipated, oranges nro quoted some higher thnn they were a week ago, owing to the high prices ruling on the coast. Temons nre nlso held nt llrm prices. Tho prices being paid for vegetables will be found In the tnble given Jn another column, " Tho egg market wnn In good shape all last week, supply and doninnd running nbout even The popular price most of tho tlmo was for good tock, It Is tho opinion among dealers, however, that receipts will show a marked Increase this week nnd In thnt event the market will probably ease off a trifle. Receipts of poultry nro light and ns there Is a folrU' good demnnd prices are held firm ut tho quotations. Tho butter mnrkct Is weak, us Is always the case at this season of the year, and prices nro now considerably lower than they wore a week ago. Wheat was steady, clos ing n shndo over yesterday. Business was mostly In the way of changing. Corn closed a shada to Uc down and the oats market 4c to c reduced. Hog product was weak and the- cloo 19c to 17c under yesterday's llunl figures. Up to ll'o'clock the wheat market was quiet but steady, slowly but firmly working upward under the Influence of steady cables nnd the firmness ' of corn, together with light receipts In the northwest. Corn, which had been llrm early, meanwhile was work ing lower and 'this finally had Its effect on wheat, which relinquished tho bulge, re treating to tho mark from which It had started out, Shorts were the best buyers early. The stock mnrkot took on nn nppcaranco of general liquida tion before the conclusion of the Satuiday short sosulon. Stocks were thrown over In larsro blocks and'thc wholo list broko badly. tho general range of prices of tho most prominent nctlvo stocks fnlllng to n level from 1 to 2 points under last night. In many Instances tho loss exceeds thcao fig ures. The results of yesterday's meeting of the executlvo committee of the American Steal und Wire company wero very fur different from what Wall street has pursuaded Itself they would be. Tho confirmation of the chairman's nssertlons of overproduction In tho company's line and tho dlspofltlon to cut prices wns not to bo construed ns re pudiation and contradiction of the accounts und gloomy predictions of Chairman Gates, made on Monday. Yesterday's rumors or chaugo of control of the company, tho ousting of tho chairman and the lnstnlllng of H. C. Frlck hnd nil been dissipated when tho Stock exchnngo opened this morning. Tho effect was seen In a sharp break in nil the Iron In dustrials on the opening transactions. It reached I points In St6iU und WIro nnd nearly that in others. Tho general list guvo way In sympathy, but met with I powerful support. The Steel stocks rallied with tho rest of the market on covering by 1 shorts. Stocks which huvo been "bulled" had the heaviest weight to enrry on account of speculative prollt-taklng. Missouri Puclllc and Bnltlmore & Ohio were conspicuous In thnt I'liisH, the former falling 34 and tho Intter 29. Declines reuclilng up to 2 points were numerous all through the railroad and Industrial list nnd In novel nl stncki ex ceeded that. Tho boars wero dlspoaed to cover on tho nppenranco of n favnrnbtn bank statcmant, but tho rally relieved thu pressure to liquidate nnd prices roll to tho lowest. Among tho uteel stocks the ex trcuio declines were: Steel & Wire, 6i; Federal Pteel, 6; Steel Hpop preferred, 4: Republic Iron & Steel preferred, 34; Steel Hoop, National Steel nnd Tenncjsro Coal, 3. In other words, there were not enough cattle or any one kind to make 11 lest of I tne marKet or reany esiaoiisn quoiaiionw. The fact Is packers do not want cattle on Saturday and shippers nre foolish to send them In. The receipts of cattle this week have been the largest of any week so for this month, but they hnve been none too large on most days and the market as a whole has been In good shape considering all the circumstances. On Monday the market was quoted a little lower, but on Tuesday tho ilecllno was recovered and on Wednesday the market was ngaln stronger. Wednesdny proved to be the high day or the week. On Thursday and Friday values weakened again, the gain of Tuesday and Wednesday being lost nnd a little more. The result Is thnt tho week closes with tho mnrket not very much different from what It was at the close oT Inst week, possibly 51J10C lower, especially on heavy cattle, One thing should btr borne In mind nnd that Is that hRndywelghts or lightweights that are thick and rat sell the most readily because thero are rewer cattle or that kind and more buyers. Another thing that It would be well for shippers to bear in mind Is that tho cattle are of much better quality thsn was tho ense a few weeks ngo, so that It take better cattle to bring top prices than It did. Cows and heifers have been In very good demand all the week, while the supply hnu been very modento, so that the market wus strong and active every day until Friday, when the market declined VulOc. The prices pftld for tho stock hnvo been very high all the week as compared with tho way other kinds of cattle are selling. Tho best kinds or 'fafbulls sold pretty well all the weuk.
