NHW YORK, April 16.-Tlie utock mar ket, after making an Indifferent strucglo all day ngnlnst tho forco of depression, yielded nil around In tho last hour nnd closed under sever pressure nnd with prices on a rapidly descending scale. Traiifl actions wero largo nil day and tln rail road list made a considerable show of strength In tho opening dealings, but there was heavy selling In the Iron nnd steel fitockj. Hut soino of tho rnllroad stocks wero bid up confidently In tlio face of violent decline In this group. Missouri Pacific was buoyant and carried tho whole of tho southwestern group with It. This stock went to 01 nnd Its Influence prom ised at ono time to overcome the renc tlonnry forces, but It fell suddenly to Thurs day's level nnd the wholo list fell heavily In symapthy. No definite news wan forth coming to account for tho weakness of tho Iron nnd steel shares beyond tho usacrtlons that tho large selling was for nccount of Important lnsldo Interests. Wall street Is confident that tho selling orders In these stocks came from Chicago and tho west nnd liquidation In Union Pacific nnd other westorn rnllroad stocks 1h attributed to tho samo Interests for the purpose, of protecting their holdings In tho steel stockH. Union Pacific was tho first of tho rnllroad stocks to show ncuto symnpthy with the demoralization In tho metal stocks. Ixito In the day a rumor took form that thero was to bo extenalvo shutting down of plants In the grent metal companies on tho ground of overproduction, In anticipation of business during tht early part of this yoar, which had not material ized. American Steel and Wlro nnd Fed eral Steel led the decline In uolnt of ac tivity nnd weakness. At tho cxtremo de clines in the group were Tennesso Coal nnd Iron, 9: Steel nnd Wire, 8; Federal Steel, 7: American Hoop, -4. Thero woro a fow rnllroad stocks besides the southwestern group which mndo a stnnd against tho weakness, but tho major ity of railroad utocks closed nt from 1 to 2 points undor Thursday's last prices. Thero was a general feeling thnt tho ndvancn In prices on tho strength of tho general outlook had about reached Its limit. It had been hoped that last week's reaction would bring In now buyers and result In a new upward movement of prices. The failure of tho earli' efforts todny to set prices up cnusod disappointment and un easiness and when prlcen began to crum bio largo spcculatlvo holdings wore thrown over. Tho nbsenco of Initiative from tho lyondon exchanco, which was closed, deprived tho market of a. usual sustaining force. Tho courso of tho money markets in London nnd Hcrlln gives llttlo prospects of sup port for American securities thero nnd causes somo uneasiness for tho future of thoso markets throughout tho financial world. Tho bond market was active nnd showed marked strength, which yielded only fillgtitly to tho lato depressing Influences. Total sales, par value, $i,3''5,000. United States now 4 advanced , but tHo 6s, reglstored, declined ,U nnd tho 3s, reclstered, in tho bid ;irlce. Atohltmn do pfd Unit. & Ohio.. Can. Puclflc . Tho only weakness developed during tho day was in tho market for cornfod steers. The qunllty of tho cattle waa pretty good on an avterago nnd among the offerings wero several loads of heavy export steers. The sales below will show tho prices paid.
