CHICAGO. April &.-!n n milder form tho
tesslon tolny whs a ropclltlon of yester
day's, excited exhibition of strength on
'change. A reactionary tendency, however,
was evident. especially In wheat, fables
were lrresponslu ami the, crop prospect
Kennmlly were excellent, two pieces of news
ahlch formed the main considerations In n
theoretical way. May corn sold higher
than yesterday, but closed VV under
that session's Mnal llgures. May wheat
closed lc and oats 'iftV lower. The eln-.o
In provisions was, partly weak and partly
tlrm pork 224c- down, lard unehungcil and
ribs MiVir tip. ,
In the fare of some discouraging consld.
rratlons. iimonir them a rather weak early
response from Liverpool to the local gains
jesterdav, corn held the Mk advance made
tho previous session, with a commendable,
thowof strength. It was a big public mar.
kct, which at times no amount of liquida
tion seemed able to check. Bxport bids
wero In tho pit plentifully. though perhaps
tint as strongly as yesterday, when. It was
reported tndnt. from New York. IIS boat
loads were taken for foreign shipment. The
opening was easier because of the feeble
attitude of Liverpool and because there
were many who looked tor a reaction. They
repented later, for Liverpool took a brace
becauso of the spot firmness there. Shorts
.overed and. boomed along by the big out
side business. May shot from llrst llgures
4(Mi I07c up to the top, 12c. The ash de
mand here slackened visibly ami an
abundance of profit-seeking corn came onto
the market, which straightway receded to
4aVillc, at which price it closed. Ml1''

f Is.fxiO bu., against 295.000 bu. hist year, Re
ceipt here were IT'.i ears.
Signs In the wheat market early were all
bearish disappointing cables tine weather
and a continued bear attitude on the part
of the local professionals The mrn
strength and the poor showing of Indiana
and Ohio for the crop caused a rally fol
lowing the opening, but In the end the
benrlsh news, reinforced by reports of
rapid seeding In the northwest, overshad
owed other considerations and tho rally was
lost. It was a big market, however, and
the pit was well tilled. The cash demand
was slack, the day's export business being
put by New York at 5 loads. Primary re
ceipts were 5l7,fOO bu., compared with ffi,.
bu. last year. Minneapolis anil Duliith
reported t'!7 cars, against last week and
1"9 a year ago. Local receipts were 91 cars,
1 of contract grade. Atlantic port clear

".T'Sifnii'V. declined to tVPc, rallied to 6Sc,

terday at 67c.
Provisions were active. There was an ex
cellent demand and a strong hog market,
but on tho other hand there were tm
poitHnt realizing sales made by longs. Lard
and ribs clod llrm, but pork rather weak.
Large export sales of lard overnight were
reported early In the session and the for
eign demand today was very fair The
opening was Irregular, May pork ranged
from lll.M to 112.95 and closed 22Ic de
pressed at 112.97':.; May lard, from Jii.TT'v to
I'i.ST'.i. closing unchanged at 16.70, and May
ribs, from 17.17'fc to J'!.!"1;., with the close.

There was a large spci ulatlve trade In
oats, with outside Interests leading In the

NBW YORK. April 5. -The stock nmrket
continued Its aitlve and extreme Irregular
character today. There wa some hesita
tion at the outset and prollt-taklng was on
a large scale during the early hours of the
day, but the aggrelve strength of some
Individual stocks, notnblv Pennsylvania
and Raltlmore Ohio, served to sustain
prices In face of realizing until the latter
part of the day. The market then devel
oped iinml't.iknlilo svnmtoms of being over-
j bought and the pressure to sell in order to
1 realize profits be.-ame urgent. The reac
tion in Pennsylvania ami Halttmote ,v unio
left prlcn without a sustaining prop and
they crumblwl rapldl. The Paelllcs, the
grangers and some of the southern rail
roads were most strongly affected, but the
wholo list fell easily and efforts to support
tho market were apparently withdrawn for
tho time being The selling movement was
allowed to spend Itself before support was
forthcoming. There was a rally In the
last fifteen minute, but It retrieved only
a small part of tho decline.
The operation In Pennsylvania were on
a similar scale to those of yesterday and
carried the price almost 1 point over last
year's highest level. The very large selling
order which wero detected In the stock
aroused uneasiness In spite of the upward
movement In the jirlce. rialtlmore Ohio
was rushed up alo to and proved una
ble to bold the advance, which was unac
companied by any news of further devel
opment to account for the strength.
The top-heavlnei of Pennrylv.inla and
Raltlmore & Ohio decided the reactionary
character of the. market on the announce
ment of no dividend on Baltimore Oh'o
common stock. Wnll street was full of ru
mors of further combinations already
effected, or to come In the trunk line ter
ritory. The rumor of a combination of tho
coalers was persistent and raised the prices
of thOMi storks for a time, but they yie'ded
sharply on denials of ee rumors. Various
minor roads In New York Central territory
were nrfecteil In the same way. There was
a very general wiping out of gains of this
character In the late re.ution. The Hock
ing Valley stocks showed notable strength
on report" of large earnings, the common
crossing 40 and retaining a net gain of lsi.
The general news and conditions contin
ued favorable to values, money working
easier and good nssurance being afforded
of 11 favorable bank statement. Reports
of earnings, esneclally of soft coal roads,
were notably larse. Ixindnn was n seller
of stocks here, with an effect on sentiment
out of all :ro;vortlon to the volume of tho
tmnractlons The sensitiveness of the
market to this Influence ail the continued
firmness of sterling exchange, while Lon
don buys stocks, lends to considerable nnes
tlonlng as to whether foreign operations
nro not conducted under cover and through
channels other than thore under observa
tion. Dealings In bonds continued on 11

Cotton Market.
NBW YORK. April 5. -The cotton market
opened barely steady, 7 points higher to 6
lower. I he opening was a poor response
to tho Bngllsh cables, whleh showed an
advance of 4jo points. Locally there was
an Impression Uiat the Bngllsh advance
was the result iff, manipulation. The fact
that later cables modified the early advance
at Liverpool had Its erfect and our nmrket
soon became Irregular, and at the lowest
point of the session showed a net loss of
fifty points. It took a great deal of buvltig
to keen prices from breaking still more.
Hut this was furnished by nartles who for
a long time have been the leading supports
of tho market.

CATTLB Receipts were larger hero to
dav and the market was In Just about tho
condition thnt may be looked for whenever
there is a decent run In other wortJs, there
was 11 lower tenaency.
There were not far from etchty loads of
cornfed steers on sale, the most of tho
cattlo here being of that description. Tho
packers had In eight loads direct from
Kanr-ns City, In addition to the number on
sale. The demand seemed to be good on
the part of the packers, but there was a.
feeling among them, apparently, that tho
receipts were large anough to admit of tho
cattle being bought for leas money than
yesterday. Accordingly, the market opened
with buyers bidding lower on most every
thing, but especially on heavy cattle.
Handy-weight cattlo seemed to be In the
best demand, provided they were, of good
quality, and tho market on that kind could
safely bo quoted as eteady with yesterday.
If they were not desirable they had to sell
11 llttlo easier In some cases. Tho number
of buyers for heavy cattle was limited and
for that reason the demand waa rather
slow antl the market wenk to a little, lower
on that kind. The fact of Its being a
Thursday, when tho Phlpers were out of tho
ilea', made It all the worse. While tho
market wns slow at the opening, It livened
up toward the close and the cattle nearly
all soltl In good eeason. The market ns a
wholo was In pretty fair shape, tnking
everything Into consideration.
Cows and heifers were In moderate aup
ply and good demand, with tho rerult thnt
tile market was fairly active and steady.
The price paid were the Fame as prevailed
on yesterday's market Dig, heavy, fat
bulls were slow sale, as has been tho case
all the work.
Good kinds of thin stockern or feeders ap
pear to bo In good demand and the few
offered for sale brouglit good, strong prices.
